Hackensack Rotary Set to Launch Landmark Fundraising Event—“Hackensack Rotary Idol”

On March 1, 2009, audition registrations and ticket sales for the first Hackensack Rotary Idol Competition will become available at www.HackensackRotary.org. Five hundred “Idol” contestants, ages 16 and up (no residence or upper age limit), along with hundreds of their fans, family and friends, will have a local opportunity to compete and cheer—all for a worthy cause.

The vocal competition is a landmark North Jersey fundraiser for the Hackensack Rotary Club’s Scholarship Program benefiting college-bound seniors who are Hackensack residents attending Hackensack High School or other County schools. The winner of Hackensack Rotary Idol will be awarded the opportunity to open a show at the Bergen Performing Arts Center.

The competition will unfold over three events: 1) the Auditions—Saturday, April 18 from 8:00 AM-6:00 PM at Hackensack High School Auditorium; 2) the Semi-Finals—Saturday, April 25 from 6:00-10:30 PM at Bergen Academies Auditorium; and 3) the Finals—Saturday, May 2 from 7:00-11:00 at Maggiano’s in Hackensack’s Riverside Square. There will be 40 semi-finalists and 10 finalists.

Since there are only 500 audition slots, contestants are urged to register early when the website goes live at 12:01 AM on March 1. Seating for the Semi-Finals and Finals will also be limited, so early ticket purchases are encouraged as well.

Contestants will pay $20 to audition. There will be no ticketed audience for the Auditions. Tickets for the Semi-Finals are $15 except for children under 10, who will pay $5. The Finals at Maggiano’s (in their Ballroom) will be a more formal emceed event, with a 4-course dinner, the Finalists’ performances, a DJ and dancing, door prizes, and the highlight announcement of the Rotary Idol winner, along with some surprises. Single ticket price for the Finals is $70. Discounts for Sponsorships are detailed on the website.

The impressive panel of judges is comprised of professionals throughout the North Jersey community. David Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Bergen Performing Arts Center, served as Apollo Theater director, a tour and concert producer for major artists such as Michael Jackson, and has performed with musicians such as Quincy Jones. John Zisa, Director of Vocal Music and Theatre Arts at Hackensack High School, is a singer, songwriter and performer who appeared as a semi-finalist in Season 4 of FOX’s “American Idol.” Greg Liosi, Supt. of Recreation & Artistic Director of the City of Hackensack/Cultural Arts Center, has an extensive background in theater as a writer, director, producer and actor. Mark Green, General Manager at Bergen PAC, has worked for Capital, EMI, Warner, and also with Prince in establishing his private label.

Rotary International is a service organization providing financial and hands-on assistance for community-based programs and projects throughout the U.S. and worldwide. The Hackensack Rotary Club has been in existence since 1920 and meets every Thursday at 12:15 PM for lunch at Donn Pomodoro Ristorante, 70 Hackensack Avenue in Hackensack. Anyone interested in giving back to their community is welcome to attend as a guest to learn more about the organization.
