HACKENSACK — A new smoke shop on Main Street is stocked with bongs, bowls and blunts, but it's what's on the outside that is really getting people fired up.

The store on Main Street in Hackensack. The owner says he received permission for the sign. A zoning official disagrees.

The name — Fu King Smoke Shop — is plastered outside on the awning of the red-lit, bamboo-lined store at 689 Main St. in the city's quiet Fairmount section. The store has not opened yet, but it's already attracting attention from parents and on social media. Residents say it's a thinly veiled profanity and that it doesn't belong in their neighborhood, a block away from an elementary school.

Big deal.

It doesn't seem to be a problem in Gallup, New Mexico (first pic) nor does it seem to generate crowds with pitchforks and torches at a London eatery with another seemingly-ambiguous name (second pic).

Are we less enlightened than either of those places? Does anyone remember a 70s head shop on Main St near Anderson called "Eye Ball"? I don't remember a stink about that name, though I DO remember calling them once and hearing a sultry female voice slowly answer, "Hello, Eye Ball" (I'll bet you do, honey).

Kids who see the new store's sign will snicker and simply move on to the next of the endless stream of double entendres that exist today.

Big forking deal.

I don't know how long it's been there, but I just saw a billboard above the shop that warns that "buzzed driving is drunk driving".

I wonder how that happened to wind up in that spot.

The video that shows both is here:

The billboard looks just like the below pic. Apparently, it's been up for a while.

Now THAT is ironic.

I don't agree with the Fu*King sign, but the objectors are missing the boat. The bigger issue with Fu*King is that he has positioned himself to be a marijuana shop in the future. That is exactly what he is going to do as soon as NJ legalizes recreational marijuana.  His 420-friendly phone # says it all.  This is something that I greatly object to existing anywhere in New Jersey.

I couldn't give a darn about the political correctness of the whole marijuana movement, or for that matter anything else that is politically correct. Marijuana is a mind-altering drug, and taken in heavy doses it fries the neural connections and permanently lowers IQ. It should remain banned, and people selling it should be incarcerated. Those possessing small amounts should suffer having the arrest on their record, and should be fined heavily but not incarcerated.

HACKENSACK – The owner of a new smoke shop on Main Street who sparked controversy with his cheeky business name — Fu King Smoke Shop — said he will change the business sign but the name will stay the same.

The Fu King Smoke Shop sign raised the ire of some residents, who said it contained a thinly-veiled profanity that didn’t belong in their neighborhood near an elementary school. City officials issued a summons to the owner not because of the name, but because they said he lacked a sign permit.

I realized something interesting about this whole controversy.  Those supporting the sign seem to be those who think marijuana should be legalized, AND they have delusions about what such legalization would entail.  If its ever legalized in NJ, what definitely won't happen is complete deregulation on the sale of this product.

It will still be illegal for people to sell it, just like alcohol.  With alcohol you have to have a storefront, and you have to pay for a very expensive license to sell alcohol, and you might not be approved for that license. THat's what could potentially happen with marijuana.  To suggest that the gangs out there will suddenly have the police off their backs is beyond ridiculous. It will STILL be illegal for those gangs to sell marijuana.  It will STILL be lucrative for the gangs to sell this product, because doing so avoids the costs of opening a storefront and buying the license.  And the police will STILL be busting young folks in the cities and giving them criminal records for selling and distributing this product, even if the local storefront 4 blocks away has the permits and licenses to sell it.

HACKENSACK — Police arrested the owner and an employee of the Fu King Smoke Shop on Main Street last month after a seven-month investigation during which undercover detectives allegedly purchased synthetic marijuana from the store.

City residents Robert J. Reichert Jr., 49, and his girlfriend, Nadine G. Karcs, 36, were arrested at the store on July 30 and charged with possession and distribution of synthetic marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and other drug offenses, Detective Sgt. Niles Malvasia said.

The synthetic marijuana was being sold from the store, police said, but customers had to first inquire about it. Malvasia said synthetic marijuana is more than twice as potent as natural marijuana.

The store’s cheeky business name raised concerns in the community when it opened last year. Reichert agreed to change the business sign by adding a space between the Fu and the King and by adding Chinese characters between the words.
