From eBay: this program is from the First Annual Hackensack Horse Show, held on October 27, 1900 at the Oritani Field Club grounds. I guess we all missed the 109th Edition a few months ago on the tennis courts.

Beauty, ain't she? That's what you're missing out on by living in Hackensack NJ instead of Hackensack MN.

She's 17' tall and she's Paul Bunyan's girlfriend. Babe the Blue Ox might be cuter.

The town held a contest to name her and they came up with this gem: Lucette Diana KENSACK!

One day, Paul just couldn't take that face anymore and called in "Extreme Makeover: Statue Edition". This was the result:





I guess that's an improvement, but it looks like they left the spackling crew under her skirt. Maybe they house the town's snowplows there or perhaps THAT'S what a kensack is! Whichever, it's not exactly flattering.

She looks like she's Italian now, so I guess this is appropriate:





Of course, the pizzas are 5' in diameter and cost $83 each.


I think I'll stay put.

A fire destroyed the Historic Anderson Street Train Station early this morning.


The historic Anderson Street Train Station in Hackensack was destroyed this morning by a three-alarm fire.

According to Matthew Wagner, Hackensack Deputy Fire Chief, the blaze started just before 6AM and grew into a three-alarm fire. Mutual Aid from surrounding communities helped battle the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The station was built in 1869 and was one of the stations on the Erie Railroad.

The station was listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 1984.

Mom strikes again!

I just found the negatives for these. She took pictures in 1956 and 1957 of the old and new Holy Trinity School.

The first image is the old building where the parking lot is now. The second is the foundation for the new HTS. You can see the backs of the apartment buildings at 46 and 50 Anderson St. These were taken on August 9, 1956:




The next two images show the convent, which looks almost completed, and the school, which has a way to go. These were taken on February 25, 1957:




The "new" school, according to her Daily Events book, opened a half-century ago on Monday, September 8, 1958 ("half-day!", she notes).
