My family did participate.  If I remember correctly, we assembled on Main St. north of the Courthouse.  No pictures.

Editor's Note: This topic was split from "Area in Need of Rehabilitation" topic.

The Record had an editorial about the impact of new residential construction on the local school system.  This article describes how building new development can have secondary, sometimes unintended consequences.  In Fair Lawn, one of those consequences is overcrowded schools.

http://www.northjersey.com/story/opinion/editorials/2017/03/19/editorial-soft-borders-fair-lawn/99323858/

There were also recent articles about how the Franklin Lakes school system is coping with overcrowded local schools caused by new residential construction.

I believe it is true for Hackensack as well, especially since most of our projects do not contribute to school taxes.

I could not agree more.  I remember the days of 2 way Main Street and a driver attempting to back into a parking space ties up traffic in both directions.  The Planners have testified that a vibrant shopping area requires 2 way streets but many of the examples they give apply to wider "Main" streets, some with center islands.  Bergenfield addressed the issue of a 2 way street by permitting parking only on one side which is better for traffic but requires convenient off street parking.  The governing body is committed to a 2 way Main St. no matter what.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: City Considers Private Waste Contract
« on: June 16, 2016, 09:32:48 AM »
It is difficult to understand the priorities of our elected officials.  The City cannot afford the $2 million for new garbage trucks but has authorized funding for a $7 million sports dome which will be used by a very small segment of our population for a few months per year.  It is not even certain that the majority of those using the dome will be Hackensack residents.

Our elected officials should rethink their priorities, stop all expenditures on the dome project, and look to funding the necessary garbage trucks.  We might even save money.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Recreation Dome
« on: May 16, 2016, 11:54:38 AM »
When I read this article about the construction of a soccer field in a park in Paterson, i realized how many potential problems there were with the proposed dome in Johnson Park.  I suggest you read the Record article.

http://www.northjersey.com/towns/paterson/paterson-council-demands-more-details-on-pennington-park-soccer-field-deal-1.1578746#storycomments

The proposed Johnson Park sports dome will replace one of the two soccer fields.  The sports dome is touted as a multi sports venue which reportedly would have one larger soccer field that could be broken down into smaller fields for a variety of indoor sports, including baseball and football.  This raises the issues of who would have access to the dome, who would set the priorities, would Hackensack residents be guaranteed access and who would determine when the field would serve as a soccer field and when it would be restructured to serve other sports.

Another issue is the maintenance costs.  Who will pay for the restructuring from sport to sport.  What is the cost associated with the maintenance of the dome and the turf.  What is the expected life of the dome and how often will the turf require replacement.  And last but not least, how will the City replace the lost soccer field in Johnson Park.

The public presentation describing the project was made only 90 minutes before the vote approving the funding and I strongly suggest that the Council begin to consider these issues and follow up with another meeting which will address some of these issues.

Sorry.  I only stumbled on the list when searching asinj.com.  I don't know where the commercial assessments are listed.

The Hackensack reassessment has been completed and the letters have been sent out.  A complete list of the 2015 and 2016 assessed values can be found at:

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Ex-HHS principal Harold Bloom receives big honor

The program honoring Harold Bloom on Saturday was well planned and carried out.  The audience was full of family, friends, teachers and graduates of HHS.  Walter Fields wrote a tribute to Mr. Bloom which was published in the Record and can be read at this website.

Hackensack Discussion / Meeting Decorum
« on: December 03, 2014, 08:19:57 AM »
I did not see this news item posted "Hackensack Council lays down guidelines for civility in meetings". Some comments from the article suggest that there is more than civility addressed in the proposed Ordinance, namely:

•   Speakers would be required to address the presiding officer, not individual council members.
•   If a group of speakers is addressing the same topic, the presiding officer can ask that a spokesman speak for the group.
•   Speakers would be asked to refrain from making "remarks irrelevant to the public business."

The Record printed an unfavorable editorial about the proposed ordinance but I cannot locate it on line.  The issue is that the request for civil discourse bordered on violating the First Amendment by restricting speech at the public meeting.

I remember when Main Street was 2 way and the bumper-to-bumper traffic.  A single car attempting to back into a parking space would tie up traffic in both directions.  The planners have stated that redevelopment will not work without 2-way traffic and have cited examples of other redevelopment sites, but none are comparable to Hackensack.  Some, like Edgewater’s City Place, have a center divider and even then traffic can be a mess.  Ramsey is a good example, I usually look for a parallel street when driving in downtown Ramsey.
