Hackensack Discussion / A Hackensack Girlfriend
« on: January 19, 2009, 07:17:43 PM »

Beauty, ain't she? That's what you're missing out on by living in Hackensack NJ instead of Hackensack MN.

She's 17' tall and she's Paul Bunyan's girlfriend. Babe the Blue Ox might be cuter.

The town held a contest to name her and they came up with this gem: Lucette Diana KENSACK!

One day, Paul just couldn't take that face anymore and called in "Extreme Makeover: Statue Edition". This was the result:

I guess that's an improvement, but it looks like they left the spackling crew under her skirt. Maybe they house the town's snowplows there or perhaps THAT'S what a kensack is! Whichever, it's not exactly flattering.

She looks like she's Italian now, so I guess this is appropriate:

Of course, the pizzas are 5' in diameter and cost $83 each.

I think I'll stay put.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Teterboro Airport
« on: January 16, 2009, 02:27:12 PM »
If the pilot had chosen the Teterboro Airport option, the flight path may well have taken the plane right over Prospect Avenue.
You can figure out the rest of the this scenario.

Plus, even if it DID make it to Teterboro, would the runways have been long enough for an Airbus A320?

I think either scenario would have been a disaster.

You must have had Sister Mary Hart in Holy Trinity.

Nope - after my time, but loved her on ET.  ;)

Wally Schirra died a year or so ago, so the paragraph should read in the past tense for him.

What about Nelson Riddle? He died nearly a quarter of a century ago. But Debby Boone is still alive, she's in the same sentence, and the verb has to be consistent, so how can you write the sentence to reflect past and present?

Aren't ALL births in the past?

THE DAY AFTER

Torn down, trains running...........and a spiffy new bus shelter has risen from the ashes:

From the other end:

The requisite shot of the two destroyed cars:

Some Green Caboose stuff:

It was "Santana's Greatest Hits" (I looked):

This was personal.

I've always loved this place. I live 3 blocks down the street from it, I've enjoyed photographing it............I even met the great love of my life face-to-face for the very first time there when she got off a train.

After I saw justwatching's post in another thread here about a problem between Anderson St and Hoboken, I checked The Record's site, and was horrified to find out that this great structure was destroyed.

After posting about it, I ran right over to take pictures with my cell phone. I'm glad I didn't wait. The snow has since gotten heavier and I wouldn't be surprised if what's left is torn down today so train service can resume without fear of collapse from the vibrations.

A woman I spoke to on the scene told me her son, who she indicated lives in the vicinity of Maple St by the tracks (It's hard to tell exactly where from just a wave of her hand in that direction), was woken at 5:30am by what he thought were firecrackers.

She said the noises came from the back of the station - the side furthest from Anderson St.

A cop told me the call came in at 5:53am. If you look at the first picture, the sidewalk clock is stopped at 6:05am, when the power was shut off.

A man in a wool cap, who sported a bluetooth phone on his right ear, came around the corner from Linden onto Anderson and saw the scene. His jaw dropped as he stopped dead in his tracks.

"Oh my God! What happened?"

I told him.

It truly is a sad day for Hackensack and its residents.

Here's what I saw when I first got there around noon:

Water in, smoke out:

This is almost 7 hours after the fire started:

As I was leaving, I took one final photo. Its angle is vaguely reminiscent of that of the antique colorized postcard from 99 years ago posted above in this thread:

On a personal photographic note, one of the pictures I took today reminded me of one I took a couple of years ago when I horizontalized on the track with my camera:

I live on Union St and my bedroom faces the river. At 7am, the strong smell of burning wood woke me up...............little did I know.

I just went over there. Horrid.

Smoke still coming out all over the place, some hot spots still had flames, hoses still trained on them. Anderson St is blocked off from Park to Linden. Lots of emergency vehicles there and in the Rite Aid lot.

I took lots of cell photos. I'll post them later today.

Hackensack Discussion / HISTORIC ANDERSON ST STATION DESTROYED BY FIRE
« on: January 10, 2009, 11:36:05 AM »
http://www.northjersey.com/breakingnews/Fire_destroy_historic_train_station.html

A fire destroyed the Historic Anderson Street Train Station early this morning.

The historic Anderson Street Train Station in Hackensack was destroyed this morning by a three-alarm fire.

According to Matthew Wagner, Hackensack Deputy Fire Chief, the blaze started just before 6AM and grew into a three-alarm fire. Mutual Aid from surrounding communities helped battle the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The station was built in 1869 and was one of the stations on the Erie Railroad.

The station was listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 1984.

Hackensack History / Re: Holy Trinity School 1950's
« on: January 10, 2009, 11:26:54 AM »
Does anyone remember any of the names of the Sisters of Charity who taught at HTS throughout the 1950's.
I remember Sister Rita...1st grade; Sister Elizabeth...2nd grade (who was transferred somewhere else mid- 50's, but don't remember where she went or who replaced her); Sister Joseph...3rd grade; and a woman who was not a nun who taught 4th grade; Sister Vincent 5th?; Sister ( Agnes?) 6th?; Sister Claire (mother superior?)7th?;Sister Juliana 8th? Anyone out there with a clearer memory or access to actual data such as an old year book? Has anyone else on the board attended during that period, or remember someone else who did?

Mrs. Frasca taught 4th grade when I was there - my last year in the old building. I don't remember Sr. Claire teaching - though I'm sure she did - I just recall her being principal.

There were 2 Sr. Margarets - fat and skinny - who I remember from my first year in the new HTS, but I'm not sure if they were in the old building. They taught 6th and 7th grade.

There are some other HTS threads you might find interesting on this site, so work that search box.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: UFO sighting in Hackensack

I called the Hackensack Intergalactic PD and they said it was a Slight Return of some backed-up Crosstown Traffic that was first spotted in the sky in late '68.

Ya feelin' me?

Since there was a police escort, I called the HPD to find out what it was.

"A funeral" and they hung up.

Today on page L-3 of The Record, there's a photo titled, "Our Lady of the Cloud". Below the picture - which shows exactly what I saw - it says:

"Ecuadorians, in a New Year tradition, making a procession with a figure of the Virgin Mary on Maple Avenue in Hackensack leading to a festival at Holy Trinity Church."

Some funeral.

Happy New Year!

Well, here's a first.

About an hour ago, I heard something outside that sounded like a high school band, but I couldn't see anything and the sound just vanished after a minute or two.

15 minutes ago, I heard it again and much louder. It seemed to be coming from Anderson St. Suddenly, I saw some sort of procession with a police escort going east on Anderson between Union and Main. They turned left on Main and the music stopped. I don't know what happened after that.

Anybody have any idea what that was?

HOMELESS SHELTER KICKED OUT OF HOME

 Monday, December 29, 2008

The FAITH Foundation is looking for a home again after it was kicked out of the First Reformed Church of Hackensack following a Christmas dinner for the homeless where heated words were exchanged between church and foundation officials.

"Maybe it's God's way of telling us we were in the wrong place," said Robin Reilly, executive director of the non-profit group that helps the homeless.

Church officials countered that they weren't scrooges and said Reilly refused to follow church rules.

The foundation held a Christmas party for about 100 homeless people at the church. Behind-the-scene tempers were short when Reilly insisted that the homeless be fed before the singing of Christmas carols and a sermon.

The Rev. Timonty Ippolito, pastor at Faith Reformed Church in Lodi, which holds Sunday worship services at the church, said the "itinerary" called for "worship, word and prayer" first, telling the food servers in the chow line to "drop" the utensils.

Reilly said she was concerned that some of the homeless had not eaten "for 24 hours."

Ippolito said he would call the police if Reilly tried to interrupt the service.

While Ippolito delivered his sermon tempers flared in the back of the room when Reilly said, "This is not what I would call a Christian service."

That riled the Rev. Leonard Masquelier, the pastor at the Hackensack church, who roared, "Robin, you're out of here!"

That didn't sit well with Eric, a foundation volunteer and ex-boxer, who got in the reverend's face, blurting, "You don't speak to a lady that way!"

Two days after the event, the church council sent Reilly an e-mail, telling her "effective immediately, your organization is no longer welcome in our church facilities."

On Saturday, foundation volunteers moved five van loads of clothes, food and gifts out of the Hackensack church.

Reilly said the items are "hidden'' in a church which she declined to identify because she didn't want it to get into trouble.

Church elder Ted Kallinikos, who oversaw the removal, said Reilly "didn't follow anything we requested of her."

"We gave her three simple rules: respect the church property as if it were your home, no cursing" and follow the Dec. 21 itinerary, Kallinikos said.

Masquerlier said there's no chance the church would reconsider its decision. The church will cancel its variance request with asking the city to allow the foundation to use its facilities, Masquerlier said.

"She's doing a wonderful thing [for the homeless], but she refuses to follow the rules," the reverend said.

The city shut down the foundation's former location on State Street, saying its certificate of occupancy did not include serving food — food that Reilly said was often sent by the city as a helpful gesture.

Since the holiday blowup, Reilly said citizens, outraged at the way she was treated, have been sending gifts and donations.

Reilly vowed to continue her work with the homeless.

"We'll keep going," she said.
