Hackensack Discussion / Johnson Avenue Dilemma
« on: February 24, 2010, 05:06:12 PM »
How does a driver comply with this?

The postcard doesn't say "west" and no one said it did.

Relax - we all agree with you.

Must be the corner of Central and Prospect.  I don't see any slope to the curb, so the curb must be Prospect.

The card says "ON Central Ave", so the curb would have to be Central, but since there's no slope, where does that leave it?

Since the wording is screwy to begin with, it might be an error card.

Where did "ORITANA" originate? I always thought it was just a postcard misprint, but I see it listed as such in legitimate sources, including this site (http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php?topic=571.0 at the very end of the thread), "The courts and lawyers of New Jersey 1661-1912, Volume 3"
By Edward Quinton Keasbey, and The New York Times.

Does that title make sense? Shouldn't that be "east OF Prospect"?

Anyone know exactly where on Central this scene is?

Seller thinks it's c. 1908.

This is a different view from that of an earlier-posted card.

Read the third picture.

Seller's description:

COMPLETE ORIGINAL American Revolutionary War era NEWSPAPER, the London Chronicle (ENGLAND) dated Sept 29, 1781. This London Chronicle is an 8-page newspaper, with a page size of 12" x 9". It contains lots of news about the American Revolutionary War, including an inside page report on movements of opposing forces in the Revolutionary War (Loyalists and Rebels) around HACKENSACK, New Jersey.

No, I'm not sure. For some reason, I've always thought that the station was west of the bridge on the north side of the tracks, but that's based on nothing other than looking at postcards.

If you know better, I stand corrected.

Seller's description:

Real picture postcard of The Corner Shop inside Hackensack Hospital in Hackensack New Jersey.

I thought this was a mixup with cards from Happy Days or something. I've never seen this 50s/60s shop. According to the reverse side of the card, this is a "restaurant".

Unused/undated.

This is the view to the east (the more common view is to the west).

I didn't hear any bells yesterday - Presidents Day - so I thought maybe they got their act together. Then I remembered that I didn't hear any on Friday either, so I checked their calendar.

There was no school either day - Winter Recess - so the bells were off anyway.

But there was school today and, of course, bells.

I was taking snow pictures in the neighborhood today and was on Passaic St when I heard the 2:42pm bells go off. I had previously only recorded the sound from a block and a half away and 7 floors up, so here was a chance to record the 2:45pm bells from a lot closer.

OMG!

This is a full-frontal assault on The First Presbyterian Church, the E.nopi Learning Center, and the residents of the apartment building at 40 Passaic St.

How do they stand it all day long?

The last one is Passaic St. You can see the Shell gas station on the corner of Linden and further down, you can see the gas station (Esso?) on the other side of Passaic on the corner of First St. You can also see the back of the Rite Aid strip mall. See below enlargements.

The seller agreed and changed his description to "Passaic St".

As for the one with the staircase, I really don't know where it's located. I know there's a similar structure in the first picture (see below), but I don't know if it's the same one.

Seller's description:

"VINTAGE ADVERTISEMENT-STEEL HANDY BUILDINGS FOR ALL PURPOSES-JOHN COOPER CO., 309 SECOND ST., HACKENSACK, N.J.-SEPTEMBER 1938-RARE"

I have a very rare & very interesting advertisement that dates back to September of 1938.  This ad is in very good condition despite the fact it is over 70 years old.  The paper is in very good condition showing only normal signs of wear. This is a very rare  advertisement measuring appx. 2 1/2" x 1".  This is a very small advertisement.  The ad originally appeared in a rare back issue of The American Home Magazine.
