Hackensack Discussion / Port Authority Gate Reassignments
« on: August 11, 2015, 03:19:02 PM »
The Port Authority is reassigning 40 bus routes, affecting six of the facility’s 21 bus carriers, as part of a plan to improve operational efficiency at the aged terminal. More on Northjersey.com:

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Milling and Paving of Prospect Avenue

UNSAFE CROSSING ON PROSPECT AVENUE DURING CONSTRUCTION (Photos attached)

Last night, I got off a NJ Transit bus at Summit and walked east on Beech Street toward Prospect Avenue. There were a number of large trucks working on Prospect, blocking the intersection of Beech and Prospect. There were no clearly marked pedestrian zones.

Another woman and I wanted to cross Prospect in the crosswalk, but there was a truck blocking the intersection. So we walked toward the Eiffel Tower (151 Prospect Ave) and noticed a worker on the grass next to the sidewalk with a cement saw, pulling the cord to start it. I don't think he was aware we were so close.

We crossed Prospect in the middle of the street, and then headed back north to cross Beech. Just then, one of the trucks with a cherry picker-type extender almost hit the power lines above me and several other pedestrians. There was only one police officer on the scene, and he was doing nothing to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians or cars.

Immediately, I called the Police precinct to ask why they don't have more police coverage at that corner. The dispatcher said, "If the officer needs help, he'll call us." I explained that he was just standing there and cars and pedestrians were left to figure out how to navigate the obstacle course of trucks and workers. I said someone is bound to get hurt or worse. His response?  "I hope not."  (Seriously?)

This situation begs the following questions:
1. Who vetted this construction company, and were safety best practices laid out prior to approving permits?
2. Why are there no clearly defined pedestrian zones for crossing? Better yet, why was this part of Prospect not closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic and a detour set up on Summit?
3. Who was responsible for notifying the community of this construction project? My building has no notices posted. Several cars were towed from Prospect, likely because no notices were posted at the time that they parked.
4. Why was there so little police presence (especially at rush hour)?

I am at a loss for whom to direct these questions to since I received nothing but apathy from Police Headquarters (safety does not seem to be their priority). Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hackensack Discussion / Tried to post last night

I have no way to reach the moderator. I drafted this fairly lengthy and articulate notice about the mayhem on Prospect avenue (road paving), went to preview and then I thought I saw a pop up window that said I wasn't allowed to post a new topic. If this is the case, why do you not explicitly say so on your splash page?  I would assume if I have a log on and password that I am registered. If there is some other method of registry that allows one to post, please direct me to where that is. Because again, it's not clear on your splash page.

Response to Regina (Reply #283 on: Yesterday at 05:25:33 PM)

I did consider Maria Colon. I've been following your posts and I'm surprised you would push for her since she's been serving on the planning board for over 20 years and I know you are looking for a change. But that is your prerogative.

Personally, I felt the other candidates had stronger credentials.

Members of the Prospect Avenue Coalition have reviewed the candidates websites and mailings.  After much introspection and thought, digging deeper than most, each of us present has a strong opinion as to which candidates may best serve our needs. The option detailed below is one you may wish to consider:
#1 John LaBrosse
#3 David Sims
#7 Jason Nunnermacker
#9 Joseph Barreto
#10 Scott Young

First, a general thanks to the Prospect Avenue Coalition (PAC) for organizing the "Meet the Candidate" nights and the follow up discussion meeting. Both were key in helping me getting a better sense of what each candidate can offer our city, and what affect they will have on LTACH.

As a member of the PAC, I have always appreciated their tireless dedication to defeating the LTACH and their thorough vetting of candidates. A split ticket gives us the best from both slates—a stronger option than choosing one slate over the other.

What made the difference for me personally, was the focus by some candidates on litigation costs and budget cuts. It is imperative that the town council we elect keep money allocated to this budget item to its conclusion.

Additionally, I'd like to add that attendees at the discussion meeting were vocal about keeping the City Attorney, Special Counsel and Zoning Board in place.

Considering all these issues, I think a split ticket is the best option and will be voting for:
#1 John LaBrosse
#3 David Sims
#7 Jason Nunnermacker
#9 Joseph Barreto
#10 Scott Young

As a united group, we can make a difference in this election.

It's a valid question, why do we have zoning rules and a 24-floor tower like this could go in?
I thought our elected officials were supposed to look out for it's residents.

There is another proposed reduction of street parking along Prospect (from Essex to Beech). Why? So we can be forced to pay for parking at the new garage on Atlantic.

So many homes have been swallowed up by the ever-expanding hospital. Those were tax-paying residents. Their tax burden now flows to the rest of us because those properties no longer exist.

If anyone is interested, a city council meeting is scheduled for:
Sept. 7th at 8:00 pm
City Hall, 3rd Floor (65 Central Avenue)

Reduced street parking affects everyone. It becomes increasingly more difficult to sell or rent your unit when there are fewer street parking options in the area.
