when did ground level retail enter the mix in the new building on State St?  everything to date that has been published has been parking ground floor and 5 stories of living space above.

it would have to be late 40's.  the Golf club is gone in the picture, the roads that exist today have been cut thru the golf course property. That area was developed by the early 50's.

the old Bank on the corner of Fair and Essex was not an old building.  when they tore it down we were allowed to use it for drill. only looked old on the outside, was a conventional wood frame structure on the inside.

The building on the SW corner of State & Sussex wasnt built until the mid 80's.  there used to be a house there, and it is in the image posted above.  it burned in 1977 and was torn down after

the dutch sandstone on the corner of Essex & Fair became the United Jersey Bank drive up/walk up.  it was torn down 12-15 years ago.

No.  Look at the middle right of the photo you posted.  See the Victorian with the mansard roof?

Yeah, but the trees are an addition. There were none    The lot behind this building, across from the firehouse today was a coal and lumber yard until at least the 1960s.

this was the original Fire Headquarters of the Paid Dept. it was at 22 Mercer St, and we believe it is still standing, heavily altered, now occupied by the ACS. Some of the features of the building are exactly the same as in photos of the period.   After the new Fire Headquarters was built in the early 20's it became Police Headquarters, and they were there until sometime after the city took over the current building they occupy after the life insurance company that owned the building defaulted in 1932.

the house on Railroad Place had a fire about 4-5 years ago and was torn down.  there were only 2 apartments in it, up and down and it was not a halfway house.

Quite true Homer, however, in the scheme of meters, I would rather go to the mall and park all day, shop and then sit down and have lunch and not worry about a meter maid tagging my car while I was having coffee.  one hour  and even two hour meters dont afford any time to do anything but one or two quick errands.

Start collection of garbage and recyclables after 6:30 a.m

Its great that you have a slew of ideas, and are prepared.    I do have to tell you though, on this one, its not practical.  collection is started early for two reasons, Traffic and the dump schedule.  later start on collection means it will  take longer to accomplish the routes, especially those on busy roads. it is also safer for crews to be out there when traffic is lighter.    The dump schedule is another and most important consideration, it opens early and closes early. later starts may mean that the trucks wont make their slots.

also, turn lanes on Passaic at Summit wont work either, because the road is too narrow at that point to accomodate 3 lanes without using eminent domain to take land from the 4 corner property owners, and possibly others down the street to widen out the road.
