Hackensack Discussion / Re: Coast Automotive
« on: May 23, 2008, 10:16:14 AM »
What memories that sign or sticker brings. I grew up right around the corner from Coast Automotive on S. State Street.  All the guys that worked there were so nice to us.  Man or man did we bother them for stickers and they would give them to us without complaining.  We used to decorate our bikes with them.   :)

If you want to own this one, it's currently on eBay for another 4.5 days and it's got no bids. Just enter item number: 280228965790

The seller claims it's from 1965, so that would place it at the Main St store.

Before it moved to S. State St, it was on Main St across from the court house. Around the corner a few doors up on Essex St was the best car wash around, but I don't remember its name.

Anybody know it (or even remember it)?

"Prix-fection" - a jacked-up, customized 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix - was my baby and was ALWAYS cruising up and down Main St. This was taken in the Fairmount Diner parking lot in the summer of 1968.

Go to YouTube and enter "Hackensack". There are over 700 videos. There's a lot of Fountains of Wayne and School of Rock to wade through, but you can find some interesting nuggets, such as a boat rescue during the flood on North Main (with a laughing commentator), the dancing guy on Anderson & River, fires and the HFD, Pascack Valley Line trains, high school stuff, the Main St Festival, etc.

Hackensack Discussion / White Manna on TV Tonight and Sunday
« on: January 28, 2008, 11:47:54 AM »
Tonight's edition of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" (The Food Network) focuses on New Jersey diners, including Hackensack's White Manna Hamburgers and Clifton's Tick Tock Diner.

It airs at 10pm, again at 1am, and a third showing will be next Sunday at 11:30pm - right after the Giants win the Super Bowl.

There's a small article about it in today's The Record on page F-2.

For Cablevision subscribers, The Food Network is on channel 29.

I hope no one has the audacity to refer to the Poitin Still as the "Poison Still".

Ooops - too late!

Hackensack Discussion / The Hunger Site
« on: November 22, 2007, 12:51:49 AM »
Each year on Thanksgiving, I post this request at the various groups/lists/forums I belong to.

For the last 6 or 7 years, the first site I visit each day is http://hungersite.com/. I hope you will too, if you don't already.

Just click on the "Click Here For Free" button once a day and you donate food. That's it - there's nothing else you have to do and no one will ever contact you. It takes two seconds.

If it was a hassle, I wouldn't bother. This is the easiest and laziest way I've ever found to do some good for those who need it.

Thanks.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: B&W Bakery Crumbcake

Yes, people do come from all over North Jersey to visit there.

Now you've gone through such extensive detail to describe the store, but you never said how long they've been in business, or what B & W really stands for.  I believe that it is the last names of the founders, both of which were of German background.  It's gone through several ownerships, and they've kept the tradition of focussing on German pastries, whether they are German or not (I think they are).

Boehringer & Weimer - in business for 56 years (or so says an online article - it seems longer though)

In the 50s, our family went there every Sunday morning after mass at Holy Trinity to buy our Sunday buns-and pastries breakfast.

My sister in Colorado makes a beeline for B&W whenever she visits to load up on crumb cake.

Folks, this is called a non sequitor.

Minor detail...................actually, it's a "non-sequitur", from the Latin "It does not follow". (I KNEW those 3 years of Bergen Catholic Latin would finally come in handy some day!)

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Go Hackensack Troasts!

Does anyone know the answer to my question regarding the makeup of the team?

I don't know the answer, but I DO know that The Record sports columnist, Bob Klapisch, is a member of the Troasts. You can email him at klapisch@northjersey.com.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Hackensack Fireworks' 15 Minutes of Fame

Although there was a one month rain delay this year, it was worth the wait. There were lots of new fireworks I had never seen before and the show lasted longer than 15 minutes.

Bravo!

Hackensack Discussion / Humor on the Hacky
« on: June 24, 2007, 01:25:15 PM »
At about 11am today, I could see the sun glistening off the low-tide sandbars of the Hackensack River at Kipp's Bend, just north of Foschini Park. At noon, I watched from my living room as a couple of rocket scientists (2M, 1F) spent a half-hour trying to free their 2 Skidoos from the barely-covered muck.

I had never seen anyone walk nearly across the river before. And while one guy was doing that, the woman, who was in water that was barely up to her shins, had problems maintaining verticality..........often.

Lots of frustration and glop on their end and lots of YouTube-worthy moments viewed on this end.
