Hackensack Discussion / The Hunger Site - Just Click a Button
« on: November 22, 2006, 07:02:07 PM »
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Every year I post this on the lists I belong to. This is something I do first thing when I get online every day and it's the easiest thing in the world to do.

Just make a daily visit to http://www.thehungersite.com/ and click on the "Help Feed The Hungry" button - that's it!

By doing this, you donate 1.1 cups of food to feed the hungry. There's nothing else to do, nothing to join, no expenses, and no one connected with this site will ever contact you.

What could be easier?

I'm confused............isn't this thread supposed to be about actual homeless people, as opposed to mentally-disadvantaged people who live in group homes?

If they live in group homes, they're hardly homeless.

The " facility" is at the corner of Ward and Main, which has become the makeshift waiting room for those clients.   An extended van discharges residents of group homes (one in Emerson,  the other in Garfield, but I'm not sure about that), in the muni lot at State St.

That lot is right outside my window. There are 3-4 vans every day dropping off the same people I've seen them drop off for years. Some of them are in no physical shape (or of no inclination) to wander anywhere. I don't know what the rest of them do.

It looks like a several places rolled into one.

You could be right. The seller of the item claims that there is "some decoupage in this art". One of the definitions given in Editor's decoupage link is: "The act of cutting out paper designs and applying them to a surface to make an all over collage."

If you'd like to read a real interesting book about Hackensack life in the 1920s with lots of local detail, find a 1969 book called "The Night We Stopped The Trolley" by Earl Schenck Miers.

The title refers to a humorous incident that was perpetrated on a trolley on Summit Ave on Halloween Night, but that's just a small part of the book.

Here are some of the subtitles within various chapters:

Union Street
State Street
High School
Beech Street
The Woods

The author lived at 113 First St and later worked for The Bergen Evening Record.

Was it my imagination or were the fireworks somewhat......um, abbreviated?

Perhaps it was so much fun that time just flew by.

I should add that not all are in agreement about for whom this test was really intended and its relevance today.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Main Street Restaurants
« on: June 12, 2006, 12:53:07 PM »
This IS a great idea.

Couldn't Main St be more easily closed on a Sunday when all the other businesses HAVE to close? I don't think a full-fledged food festival would be as successful if the street was open - business as usual - and oh-by-the-way, there are some tables with food samples scattered about. That won't draw big crowds.

It would require some other entertainment activities to fill the street gaps and draw more people, but as an international cuisignoramus, I would prefer to sample the many different foods in this manner rather than make believe that I'll actually make the effort to dine at all of the restaurants someday.

I would also much prefer to associate the foods with the restaurants IN FRONT OF the restaurants for future reference rather than at an off-Main St location where the food may be memorable, but the restaurant location wouldn't be. I would think the restaurants would prefer that too.

I would also think that their chefs would prefer to do this on-premise, where all their preparation materials would be, rather than schlep a truckful of things to a mall.

This will only apply today and maybe tomorrow, but I just glanced at "Recent Posts" and noticed these two startling subjects:

"211 Passaic Street DESTROYED by Editor"

Shame on both of you two pyromaniacs!  ;)

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Light Pollution (Photos)
« on: March 09, 2006, 12:05:34 PM »
Thank you for your information.

One thing I didn't write about was the fact that I DID contact PSE&G a few years ago. They were shown many of the pictures I showed in my original post here. Some of their people came up here one evening to see for themselves and eventually adjusted one or two lights.

Many of the other offending lights were on private property and PSE&G said that meant they would have to be contacted by those property owners initially to get anything done. That's when I encountered the in-person problems with those property owners, who never bothered to contact PSE&G, so nothing got done.

A few weeks later, PSE&G readjusted one of the "corrected" ones so that I now can see the light again. They insisted that all were "in compliance".

When they were here, PSE&G also noticed that my block had no streetlight, said, "we'll get right on that".........and never did that either, so you can guess that my faith in PSE&G is not real high at the moment.

I did not contact NJBPU at the time, so that information is most welcome. Thanks again.

<< If you think about it, the only reason you SEE anything is because light is hitting an object, and some of that light is bouncing from that object directly into the iris of your eye. >>

Reflected light has nothing to do with the situation I described. I'm not talking about any light bouncing off anything else - that's a whole 'nother problem.

I thought the pictures made it abundantly clear that this is about light coming DIRECTLY from the source. I can SEE the inside of the light boxes. The first thing that these lights hit is my eye - not the ground or cars or anything else. Reflected light certainly adds to light pollution, but, in that case,  I would not be in the direct beam as I am now.

Hackensack History / Re: Hendrix at George's Club 20 (Hackensack)
« on: February 05, 2006, 12:54:40 PM »
There are sooooo many variations of this show out there on LP and CD. I don't think I've seen this particular 7-song LP before. My CD-R has 10 songs, but only 4 match with this LP. I think I once saw a 20-song version somewhere.

I just listened to the first cut ("Drivin' South"). Jimi is introduced as "Jimmy James" - the name he went by back then, but there's no mistaking that voice when you hear it (BTW - he had a band in 1966 called "Jimmy James and the Blue Flames").

During that introduction, he's asked, "What are you gonna do, Jimmy, on this Christmas plus one?", so that should confirm the performance date of December 26, 1965.

Too bad I didn't cruise a block off Main St. that night.

If you don't win the album, Editor, you can copy mine if you want.

<< "fried leafe" >>

Thank you for at least supplying the context - otherwise, it would make me seem to be some sort of burnout.

Yeah, my food and I are still getting cooked by Nextel. The state never bothered fixing the error they admitted making (they thought my rooftop apartment was an empty elevator room and told the FCC that there were "no adverse effects"!).

Frying for my art, I guess, (and taking a LOT fewer pictures from my roof).
