An N95 and an N2000?
It's the first time I've seen anyone outside my window wearing an anti-virus mask.
Let's hope it doesn't become commonplace (but I have a feeling it will).

I just received this:

It CAN be done:

Bunch of people in the Fairmount section went out to sing The Gambler in honor of Kenny Rogers who died today. Organized on the spur of the moment via Facebook. I've heard of people leaving birthday wishes in chalk on the sidewalk.
We need more ideas like this. I wonder what can safely be done with lasers, balloons, drones,- anything to keep people looking up.

Maybe it is more simple than I thought.

Along those lines...........this is great. Read the story and then scroll down to listen to Jeremy Ross' post:

The rest are not so great, with the exception of Takahiko Sugimura's post.
Now if only we could get the Prospect Avenue high-rises to ALL try this, it might be heard citywide.
Can you imagine?

I took a walk last Thursday - 3/26 - from my apartment to the pharmacy at Anderson and Linden. The first thing I saw after crossing Union St was a new sign at the SE entrance to Anderson Park (first picture). I started wondering if there were any signs in the Anderson Street businesses' windows. There were (next 4 pictures) and they were from a hair studio, Walgreen's, The China Palace and the Hackensack Convenience Store.
When I returned home, I started wondering about Main St. For all the wrong reasons, these are historic times and this is a site that holds most of the history of Hackensack. 100 years from now, historians will also wonder about this horrible virus and its effect on the city. It's our duty to provide accurate glimpses of what's going on. I would urge every member to post photos and/or tell stories of whatever they happen to see that tells the local Coronavirus saga for the benefit of future researchers.
I want to show what Main St looked like during this COVID-19 nightmare, so I took a 2-mile walk on Friday morning, March 27, from Anderson St to the Courthouse and back to photograph every closed sign. There were 50 of them - 17 on the east side of the street and 33 on the west side. I did not photograph any of the "Open for delivery or pickup" signs of all the open food businesses.
Some of the messages were businesslike and some were personal and hand-written. Two were cute. Note that one of the hand-written signs from Anderson Street (4th image) is nearly identical to one from Main Street (16th image).
I have a limit of 20 images per post, so this will be shown in 3 posts. The Editor will be happy to learn that all the pictures - which originally totaled 16.6MB - have had their combined weight reduced to 5.6MB.
If anyone wants to know where the first cute one was posted (the "No handshakes, no hugs, no kisses" sign) and might be thinking of patronizing that place of business when this is all over, it's in the picture right after the sign.
So here are the 5 Thursday Anderson St shots and the first 14 Friday ones - plus the store photo - heading south on the east side of Main St):
-
The first 3 images finish up the east side of Main St and then the trudge north on the west side begins with the remaining 17:
-
The 8th image is the other cute one with its R.E.M. song reference. Of course, it's from The Record King, which just happens to be across the street from the Hugs and Kisses cutie. Friendly block between Berry and Camden.........
The 12th pic (Domino's Pizza) is the only one I've ever seen that says they'll put your order on the hood of your car, which I guess magically lessens the amount of Corona cooties you'd get if they handed it to you. Here's a better idea: tell them to open the hood and place it on your engine to keep it hot until you get home.
There are two final images that belong here. One shows what I think is a Corona-infected clock on the CVS building at Main and Atlantic and the first 3 words of the other picture offer hope for a future where these signs won't be needed anymore.
Until then, remember to sing the chorus of Prince's "Raspberry Beret" to pass the time during your 20-seconds of hand-washing.

It's so hard to see this.

Tommy played this slower version alone at his NJ home today on his Facebook page:

This happened at 2pm and it's already pushing 8,000 views.
By default, the sound is turned off, so be sure to adjust that at the bottom of the video.
The song has sort of become an anthem of Stay-At-Home and other artists have covered the song lately.
BTW - Tommy is not left-handed - I don't know why the video shows him playing lefty.

This was a better show than I thought it was going to be and quite emotional. I think the high point was when Fountains of Wayne performed "Hackensack", dedicating it to former bandmate Adam Schlesinger, who recently died of the Corona virus.
If you can find the show, it's worth watching.

Keep an eye on the sky and have your camera handy tomorrow from 12:00 to 12:40pm as 12 Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels will engage in a criss-crossing flyover of the NYC area (see below Nixle notice). The NJ part of it will include a flyup from Newark that approaches Teterboro.
And here's the notice from Teterboro:
Greetings,
Tomorrow Tuesday April 28th beginning at approximately 12:00 pm, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and U.S. Navy Blue Angels demonstration squadrons will be conducting a flyover of the NYC metro area. A formation of 12 total aircraft will conduct the flyovers as a collaborative salute from the Air Force and Navy to recognize healthcare workers, first responders, military, and other essential personnel for their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The planned flyover flight path begins at the George Washington Bridge and will fly south over Manhattan and the Hudson River, crossing over into New Jersey over Hudson County. Once over New Jersey, the formation will turn north and overfly the city of Newark before continuing north towards Teterboro Airport. Adjacent to Teterboro, the formation will then turn and head southeast returning to New York City. Attached is a map provided by the squadrons outlining the route and approximate overflight times.
Feel free to contact the TEB Noise Abatement Office with any questions regarding tomorrow’s activity.

What I wrote for the video:
I could barely see this as I was shooting it because I was standing in too much sun in my living room. If only they waited another hour or two (yeah, right).
Just before they reached the World Trade Center, the focus was lost and not recovered in time, so this is all I got.
Considering that I shot this from home in another state, I'll take it.
By the way - that busy highway that you see at the bottom about 20 seconds in is Route 80 where it crosses the Hackensack River.
About the pix:
A little less haze and later in the day would have been ideal, but at least it wasn't yesterday (rainy, cloudy).
I started off doing video on the first leg from north of the GWB and down through Manhattan, but could NOT maintain a focus and tossed it.
1. By the time I switched to stills, they were approaching the World Trade Center and then hopped over to Jersey, which I could barely see.
2. As they headed down to Newark, I got this shot that shows people watching from the roof of a residential building on State St.
3. Here's my definitive Hackensack picture of the event. The planes had come back north and made a right somewhere near Teterboro and headed east towards Manhattan, passing a couple of Main St projects.
4,5. Heading north over Queens. For a little variety, I took the color out of #5. After that, they vanished for 15-20 minutes as they flew over Long Island and then headed over to Westchester County and the Bronx.
6. I finally saw them well north of the GWB and got this shot that includes the 395 Main project at the bottom and the trees of Teaneck.
7,8,9. The last 3 shots are sequential as they fly by The Modern towers complex in Fort Lee. Since 395 Main wasn't adding much, I cut it out of the last one. After that, I finished up by shooting the below video.
Throughout the shots, you can see 4 or so dark spots that probably were TV news choppers and one chase plane bringing up the rear. I wanted to get this post up fast before you see the blow-you-away images on the news tonight. ;)

Subject: New Jersey ANG Military Flyover - May 12th
Greetings,
The New Jersey Air National Guard will be conducting a fly over of the entire state tomorrow beginning at 11:30 am. F-16 fighter jets and at least one KC-135 aerial refueling tanker jet will be flying over northern New Jersey between 11:45 am and 12:00 pm. Attached is map of the expected flyover route and times.

They were right on time, but weren't all together. Three F-16s and a refueling tanker jet came by in two groups at 11:50 and 11:52am.
Using binoculars, the first thing I saw in the distance was a large plane and a tiny one making a turn.........maybe in the Teterboro Airport vicinity? Then I lost them...........maybe they flew low in salute? A minute later, I saw them again coming in my direction, a little to my right. They were moving quickly, so it was hard to keep them in focus.
I got off a couple of shots - the first photo was the only decent one of those - and as they went by my south-facing window, I got one or two more, the best one of the day being the second image.
Two minutes later, the other two jets came by, but they were too small and fast to get any shots off.
I really wish I had my roof access for this.

While sitting at my computer at home yesterday, I heard some strange music outside. I looked out and saw this oddly-decorated vehicle. But then I noticed that the decorations were in the Hackensack High School colors and I could make out the word "GRAD" on the car (I think it's also on the balloon).
I guessed it might be the start of a drive-by-and-wave graduation caravan of sorts (it wasn't), so I started the video, which is just 3 sewn-together parts.
A masked girl emerged from the building, signed something and posed with another masked person, while Mom(?) had them pose for her. The girl walked over to the car, the mask vanished and she posed for Mom(?). She leapt in the air and that seemed to signal the end of the ceremony. She walked up the few steps to the door of the building, turned around and she and Mom(?) waved, blew kisses, whooped it up and went inside.
The car cranked up the music and took off. I could see it said "Congrats 2020 Grad" on the side and had a platform attached to the back with some healthy-sized speakers on it. The music continued as it passed my building.
It doesn't make up for the loss of the graduation ceremony with all your friends, but it was certainly a very nice gesture and I hope she appreciated it.
I wonder if that vehicle went to EVERY graduate's home.

The saliva test (it's better than a stick up your nose)
-
If you followed the above directions, you might have thought they canceled the event. There was nothing/nobody in the east wing parking lot. Eventually, I found my way to the main (west) parking lot on Comet Way where all the action was.
I had one of these saliva tests done 2 months ago in the Lodi DMV lot. It was pretty quick and easy and today in Hackensack was no different. Well, ONE thing was different. Although the above notice states that antibody tests are only for those who've had a previous positive test (I haven't) and who brought those test results with them, they offered me one.
Surprisingly, it turns out they hadn't used their daily ration of 200 tests by the time I was there at 2pm (I was #181). I told them that the reason they were still available was probably because too many people went home when they found an empty east wing parking lot.
I didn't shoot at the Lodi one, but managed to take a few quickies today, including the 3 shots that make up the below photo stitch (click to enlarge). I had to shoot fast and hope that they lined up. They did.
I HAD to get a closeup of the last shot. You don't see a sign like that very often.

BREAKING NEWS:
Mayor John Labrosse opened tonight's City Council meeting by confirming rumors that Deputy Mayor David Sims violated the Covid-19 lockdown at City Hall in the last week of December by entering the building with a relative who had tested positive for the coronavirus. The building on Central Avenue is closed to visitors.
The mayor called the lockdown violation an "unfortunate incident," and said that no one condones Sims' actions. The relative is believed to be Sims' daughter, who is married and doesn't live with the councilman.
As a precaution, the mayor said, the 2nd floor of the building was emptied of employees.
-
The Record carried a story about Deputy Mayor David Sims violating the lockdown at Hackensack City Hall on Dec. 22, 2020, and bringing his married daughter, who had tested positive for Covid-19. They interacted with a city employee, who was sent home to quarantine for 14 days, according to the story, which was reprinted on the front page of the Jan. 22, 2021, Hackensack Chronicle.
The original story in The Record prompted the DailyVoice.com to cover the violation by Sims. Before that, an editor at the Daily Voice said he wouldn't report it and called the controversy over Sims' Covid-19 violation political. The story was also covered by a TV news station in New York.
-
I've been told that Deputy Mayor David Sims will not be part of the slate headed by Mayor John Labrosse in the May municipal election.
