Hackensack Discussion / City Council meeting schedule
« on: August 04, 2015, 08:38:07 PM »
When City Council and COW meetings are postponed or rescheduled, leaving the schedule as is causes confusion. I looked at the schedule on Monday, and saw meetings scheduled for tonight. But the meetings were held on Monday night, and the city Web site claims to have posted a notice on the change. Maybe it's not prominent enough. And when you can't count on The Record coming through with next-day coverage, then the public loses an opportunity to be heard.

Community Soapbox / 2013 City Council Campaign Announcement
« on: March 05, 2013, 02:01:03 PM »
Meet and greet with Victor E. Sasson at the Dunkin' Donuts on Passaic Street, near the railroad tracks, on Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to noon, to discuss his candidacy for the City Council and Eye on The Record. He will have nominating petitions to sign, if you wish to do so. Here is his platform, modified slightly from when he posted it originally:

VOTE FOR PEACE AND QUIET

I am Victor E. Sasson, a former reporter and copy editor at The Record of Hackensack, and I have owned a home in Hackensack since August 2007. Now, I am running as an Independent for the Hackensack City Council on a quality of life platform. The election will be held on May 14, 2013, and I need 250 signatures from registered voters to get on the ballot. If elected, I will:

Work with Teterboro Airport to reduce aircraft noise, and work with federal officials to get a mandatory curfew on flights between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Get Hackensack to purchase more efficient vehicles, including hybrids, for the Police Department and other agencies.
Explore government grants to add hybrids to the cityís fleet, and encourage the installation of more solar panels on city owned property.
Start collection of garbage and recyclables after 6:30 a.m.
Ban commercial landscaping work on Sundays.
Encourage police to establish routine patrols of neighborhoods, if that isnít being done now. Get police to crack down on speeders, stop-sign violators and loud motorcycles.
Encourage the city to undertake a major program to repave streets.
Have turn lanes installed on Passaic Street, at Summit Avenue, and at other traffic bottlenecks.
Encourage the non-profit Hackensack University Medical Center to pay more to the city in lieu of taxes.
Encourage the City Council to deliver a property tax cut to residents by passing along some of the additional tax revenue from major building projects, and gasoline and electricity savings.
Call me with suggestions: 201-488-3012

Hackensack Discussion / Quality of food in the public schools
« on: February 24, 2013, 05:37:35 PM »
My stepson is 15 and attends Hackensack High School. He hates the food there, and often doesn't have lunch, even though he has a lot of money in his account. On Friday, I saw some kids at Starbucks on Essex Street in Hackensack, asked where they went school, and was told Hackensack High. I said it seemed like a long walk for something to eat, and one of the kids said he never eats lunch there. My stepson says a lot of kids walk to the Dunkin' Donuts on Passaic Street for lunch. A pizzeria near the high school does a land-office business.

I encountered a candidate for the school board on Saturday night, mentioned kids' view of the food at the high school, and he said two things: there are lots of high schools with bad food, and Hackensack High had more serious problems. He's not getting my vote. I met another candidate for the school board today, and she reacted positively to my concern.

Why would anyone minimize the importance of food in schools? What else has a direct relationship to your health and feeling of well-being?

Hackensack doesn't spend millions of dollars every year on school busing. Where is that money going? Certainly not for good food the kids want to eat.
