Hackensack Discussion / Hackensack Main Street Festival 2010
« on: October 02, 2010, 06:52:55 PM »
The main reason I went to this year's street festival was one of nostalgia. The guitarist for Fillet of Soul was an old friend named Joe Murray, whom I hadn't seen in over 30 years.

Joe played in Pegasus back then and that was the local band that I basically sharpened my concert-shooting skills on. While I was talking to him after the show, another Pegasus member showed up (Ted the bass player!), so it was a nice little reunion.

You can see Joe and his red guitar in the next-to last picture. The last picture is a now-and-then, showing Joe after the show and when I shot him in Pegasus in April of 1977 (not sure of the venue).

If you're referring to the circled lot below, I recall once being in a big old house that was there somewhere around 1966 or 1967. I think I knew a girl who lived there. I'm guessing it was torn down in the 70s.

Description:

Measuring about 3" x 5-3/4, and 60 pages long, this pocket-sized paperback booklet is the 1953 Roster of members (past and present) of Pioneer Lodge No. 70, F & A. M., a Freemasons lodge in Hackensack, New Jersey. It is literally just lists of names, titles and dates, obviously of great interest to local historians, but not exactly gripping bed-time reading. It is in excellent condition.

Description:

What we are offering here are a set of tax bills representing two propeerties in the City of Hackensack, New Jersey. The bills - all paid and receipt-stamped by the city - date from 1940 to 1949, and they are all in the name of either Hiram W. Phillips or Hiram W. and Eunice R. Phillips, who lived first at 274 State Street, Hackensack, and then at 176 Summit Avenue, Hackensack. Because of size and color variations from year to year, here's a chronological breakdown of the bills in the lot:

1940 - all light blue, and in Hiram's name only, and for 274 State Street only. One bill for the first and second quarters, and two for the third and fourth quarters, the second showing a change in valuation and a consequent overpayment. These all measure 6" x 12" except the first and second quarter bill is shorter because a stub has been detached.

1941 - all light grey, and in Hiram's name only, and for 274 State Street only. One bill for the first and second quarters, and two for the third and fourth quarters, the second showing a change in valuation and a consequent overpayment. These also all measure 6" x 12" except the first and second quarter bill is shorter because a stub has been detached.

The bills for 1942 through 1949 all measure about 8" x 4-1/2". The bills for each year are paper-clipped together (so there may be rust and indentation marks). All are billed jointly to Hiram and Eunice Phillips.

1942 - Cream color. Two bills (first half/second half) for 274 State Street (which is also the Phillips' mailing address) and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1943 - Blue. Two bills (first half/second half) for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave. The Phillips' mailing address is 274 State Street for the first half bills, but the second half bills - and the bills for all the subsequent years in the batch - are addresssed only to Hiram Phillips at 176 Summit Ave.

1944 - Yellow. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1945 - Light grey. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1946 - White. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1947 - White with green type. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1948 - White with brown type. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1946 - White. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave., plus a corrected second half bill for 176 Summit Ave., showing a lowered valuation and assessment.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: State Champion Trees in Hackensack
« on: September 24, 2010, 01:40:09 AM »
...that Teaneck tree...I know that tree.

Me too.

Here it is a couple of days ago. The second picture is one of the very first pictures I ever took - it's almost 53 years old and I'm pretty sure that most of that roundish blob on the right is the same tree.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Linden Street Construction

I recently got a roll of slides back that I shot over the Summer and liked how this came out.

The simultaneous pyrotechnics were provided by Maywood (l.) and Saddle Brook (r.). Maywood is a bit overexposed because they were in their finale. The long trail of smoke from Maywood sets off the horizon above the former Green Monster on Linden St.

The second image shows the building's current color scheme.
