Hackensack History / Re: Name of restaurant before it was Cubby's
« on: March 06, 2010, 06:03:28 PM »

As for the guy across the street, I think his name was spelled Wherle. He lived on Maple Hill Drive.   Does anyone know if that property is still undergoing remediation of contamination.

I can't speak for the quality of food at Pete's Luncheonette because the place looked like a dive compared to the new restaurant there now, so I never ate there.  Wasn't there another restaurant there after Pete's, and before the current owner ?

::)

Thanks JW I did spell Wherle wrong and you spelled it right....But then I probably spelled Lepera wrong also...

I guess you never worked at Goldberg Slipper or  Hackensack DPW... if you never ate at Pete's it was no dive, it was good working class people food.... towards the end I guess the outside needed paint... but thats about when the big change up came to the area and people started bringing their left over rice and beans to work for lunch and not frequenting local establisments...its hard to stay in business let alone paint the place when nobody is buying....Im just saying....

It looks like Xanadu.

Thats funny....and your right on with your comparison..

Don't laugh, it's bigger and stronger than the Nina, the Pinta, or the Santa Maria.

Someone needs to get some photographs of the Hackensack
What is the Hackensack ?... That you are referring to...

To my knowledge it started off as Cubby's....

again to my knowledge.....I don't know  everything....

It was old man Werlies yard  along with the property accross the street...car lots, old boats, construction equiptment, trucks , trailers, etc....

There was Pete's Lunchenette which was on the same side of River street only 3  blocks north of where Cubbys sits..

Petes was good....Pete Lepera...owned it.....Wonderful Guy...he's passed on now.

I have a Mr. & Mrs. Cardinal out at my feeder now ....I think its as JustWatching says it might be the West Nile....Because there used to be alot more Cardinals then there are now.....

They are really tough birds them and Blue Jays..They will fight for theirs.....

I dont think its a rapture issue ...I do have a Sharp Shin Hawk that uses my back yard as it's own little deli from time to time....but it only seems to like the more delicate and tender Morning Doves.....all you see is a little pile of fine downy feathers when its through....

That's Nature.............

It sort of looks like the Dr's. residence (which is still there)on the northwest corner of Central and Summit.....But they probably all looked similar back then.....I'm going by the picture in my minds eye.....

Hackensack History / Silky's BBQ
« on: February 14, 2010, 06:29:57 PM »

Heres a Question about RECENT Anderson St History...?

Does anyone know where Silky and his Mom moved to and if they are still in business ?, Silky's BBQ was (literally) a Little Hole in the wall BBQ joint,  where there is now a Chinese take out.....His Mother did the cooking which was some good eating....I get the willies for BBQ..and wish they were still around....

I guess it was there 8 - 10 years ago....

Are there any back yard bird feeders here...?

and if so.....

Has anyone noticed the lack of Cardinals and Blue Jays this year.....I really didn't miss them until the 12 '' of snow this past wednesday....usually when the ground is blanketed with snow like this....they are at my feeder....but not this year... none to be seen anywhere....just wondering if maybe they moved to your back yard....

Everything sold there was over priced.....

If you were buying the goods they sold...it was at a rough period in someones life, or someone you cared about....and you always felt taken advantaged of...

There was a little supply store next to the Fire House on Main st...that was so much better, Kinder,& Gentler.... I can't remember the name though..

I was thinking of the Hole in the Wall club on 17. Anyone remember the big painting of a hole in the wall on the front wall where you could "see" what was going on inside the club?

Great 70s club names. The worst local 70s club name? "The Cuss from Hoe" on Paramus Rd, Paramus.

They really packed them in at both of them.....some good Local Bands at The Cuss........

How about The Bears Nest.....The Library..... The Tow Path....Mothers....The Soap Factory...The Mouse Trap...The Ram's Horn.....so many places, to many places.....

As far as the Wild life in Borgs woods....it makes its way in following Streams and railroad tracks....see the story about Garrett Mountain....in the Record 2 weeks ago.....they say up to 600 deer live there.....they are opening up a hunt to thin the heard.....about 3 years ago there was a dead deer on 17 at Essex st....
