Hackensack History / Re: Possible Space for a HACKENSACK MUSEUM
« on: January 05, 2010, 07:59:15 PM »

The other option would be using the old Cultural Arts Center on Broadway as the Museum,  send a letter to the Mayor & Council, 65 Central Ave, Hackensack, NJ 07601.

I hope if and when they vacate the Broadway location, they don't do anything stupid with that Old Church Building....it's a fine old Church....it's on page 3 of the 1800's atlas map, block # 13.....

it's a part of Hackensack History.......

The last night that the State Restaurant was open.

Homer where was this located ?....it wasn't in the State Hotel was it ?.....That's another building that always intrigued while walking past, if that building could speak i'd be there to listen....

There was a car flipped on it's roof last night almost in front of the State Hotel yesterday 01-02-2010

Does anyone remember a severly overgrown Church on the corner of Union and Central or Park and Central during the 60's and early 70's it was called The Church Insects......???

I'm not kidding.....I walked past it everyday for many years in that time frame....I was always intriqued but I guess not enough to go in....and it was so overgrown it was scary

Not a bad selection.
Either you are too young OR afraid to admit you ever cavorted at the Ivy House; listened to the piano player and hoisted [censored]tails with the lawyers and judges at the Colonial with brother Lou; went to the transvestites ball on the last night that the State Restaurant was open; or caught the male go go dancers at The New Bell.
Hackensack has had it's fair share of fine watering holes.

Homer....Yes your first assumption is right..... I'm too young ,,,,,54 years of age to be exact....But even at 54, my mind is lacking some of what it use to have,(maybe it's the side effects of drinking, which I don't do anymore)16 years havn't had more then a beer now and then with supper..

There are some establisments I can not remember...Like in the middle of main street, round about where the short-cut is to get to the Bus Transfer and it was next to the shoemakers shop, there was a nice little bar owened by a guy named Richie, had live bands some nights....I can't remember the name of that place for anything..I know Richie was from Hack, and sold the bar to go to Fla. and open a Hot Dog Stand...which I heard he did......any help...?

Theres a few more I can't remember...

Never knew the ones you mention of in Hackensack...it was before my time, Not afraid to admit it, I would have been right there with you.....

Charlamane
Dweets Place

Are you referring to the Charlmaree and Dweet's Royal Oak? Didn't Dweet's have a couple of name variations?

BLeaf....Yes I did mean Dweets Royal Oak Room
which is now Lazy Lannigans....Dweet had that and Dweets East over on Ceader Lane under the Path-Mark in Teaneck....

And yes, to your Question did I mean Charlmaree... Sometimes I can't remember and sometimes I can't spell...sometimes I just don't proof read my typing...which by the way I do with 2 fat fingers.......shoot me.

But its all good....

After breaking out my very large magnifying glass and looking closely at the people in the photo, you can even whittle the student count down by about 15....

If you look, there are a look of older people, I guess Teachers, maybe even a Custodian, even the school Nurse............But the Student count looks to be about 45 in my estimation.....

To be honest, I have no indication that the name on that image had anything to do with creating the picture. I would lean towards it being the name of the owner of the photo - maybe a student.

Even back then, a photographer would have a more professional-looking stamp or something, but would not write his/her name and address in that manner.

You did bring to my attention the fact that I put the wrong backside image with this auction. It's the one for the 1916 HHS girls basketball team. The correct image is now there and has a lot more signatures there to go through.

It's even got "1966" and "1968" written on the top for some reason. Figure THAT one out!

.
Your Right .....Now that I can see the back of the right picture  I can clearly see Marjorie Bogert Browne....who must be the owner of the photo...

As to your question....figure out why it says 1966 & 1968 and there are more signatures .....

It would be pure speculation on my part... but here goes.....

There are 60 people in the photo in 1918....

and I would guess that maybe in 1966 the 27 signatures on the back were 27 that showed up for a 48 year reunion....

or were 27 confirmed or thought to still be alive...

or names recorded by Ms. Margorie in 1966 of alumnus that might attend a 50 year reunion in 1968....

1968 would have been a 50 year reunion and I can see 2 years preperation going into a reunion of that many years.....

BLeafe....When I first looked at the script on the back of photo, I jotted down 4 different names...

1st..Loxier Bogert Frame....1916   1917
2nd..Loxier Bogert Photo.... "          "
3rd..Lozier Bogert Frame.... "          "
4th..Lozier Bogert Photo..... "          "

Then I went to page 11 on the atlas map...and there are 3 Bogert properties on Anderson st...2 of them being on block # 72 over by railroad ave...

and 1 being on the corner of Main and Anderson block #76.....

Then there is also a Bogert on Main and Bogert, Block #81...and 2 doors up on Main is a Steven Lozier Block# 88

Maybe just maybe it was a jointly owned Photo Shop owned by the 2 neighbors.... ?

Its fun trying to figure it out....I wish there were more maps....

Thats what I was suggesting...that the fizz might have been from the polution....

Just Watching heres a link to the story and a snip-it..

Its an interesting read with pictures......

Quote
snip~“Crime was a major concern in the 1800s, and streetlights cut that down. It represented a big improvement in the quality of life,” said Bruce Preston, the manager of environmental projects for PSE&G who oversees the cleanup program. “Unfortunately some of the tar byproduct was deposited around the plants. It’s a legacy and liability we want to get off the books.”

Working in a gas works was difficult and dangerous. Fires and explosions were not uncommon. Making the gas also produced wastes.

Burned at high temperatures, the coal produced coke, a useful clean-burning fuel that could be resold. The process also generated coal tar, which included cancer-causing benzene. Depending on where it had been mined, the coal could also carry heavy metals, such as arsenic.

This might be of interest to some....
on page 3-

Block # 5 Hudson st, between Franklin and Frederick sts.......

Is JP Seilheimer soda works..(which was around until the 80's).....they used water to make their Seltzer and Soda from their own ground well....and just 100 feet away accross Water st is the Gas Works (which is now PSE&G) where in earlier days they somehow crushed coal to make gas for the gas lamps on the streets and in houses....and in the process of doing so that property was so contaminated that PSE&G just spent millions cleaning the site.....

earlier this year there was a story in the Bergen Record about how poluted it was....

Maybe there was a secret ingredient in the water that made the Seltzer and Soda so good.....I drank plenty of it in my day....they had home delivery with the side saddle trucks....

If you do a google search of Seilheimer you can see some bottle caps and old porcelain soda shop signs....highly collectable to some.....in the early 90's I through away a few wooden case's with empty bottles....seltzer and soda....If only I had future vision

What about Steljie's though? Been racking my brain about that one. Was that on Main St, near the Middle School?

Sorry for the delay in getting back,   T.O.T.H.....another Son of Hackensack passed on this past week....H.H.S. class of 71.....Way to soon....

Yes Steljies was on Main Street just south of, the Fox Theater.......I remember the split pea soup.....it was the best......you just can't find a good place like that to eat these day's.....I know all things pass....but it's just not getting any better..

Jacks Airport Diner.....was the best though...sat on rt 46 west in So. Hackensack where there is now a wendys....they always had fresh cooked Roast Beefs,Turkeys,Hams, everything, it was like eating Mom's cooking, Meat, vegetables and mashed.....nothing like it around these days.........
