This last post of the year may be my favorite. I've never seen anything like this before:

Hackensack Discussion / Re: My favorite paper is not having a good day

Wow! It's been 6 months! Aside from the comics still being B&W most days and color on the other days, the paper has been somewhat flub-free.............until today.

You know when someone is being quoted and they use a naughty word, so the paper replaces that word with "(expletive)"?

Look what they did today:

Hackensack's Future must want me to vote in the past..............

There are a LOT of Hackensack images in this one. A short photowalk turned out to be about 3 miles. Assuming you know Hackensack streets, here's the itinerary:

Start at Union & Ward, to State to Berry to Main to Camden to State to Salem to Main to the Courthouse to the Court Street Bridge to River to Camden to Main to Ward to Union & Ward = 66 postable pictures in an hour and a half.

Note: there are NOT 300 pix/vids in this post. The post-editing number is 1/6 of that.

Two from October 9 within a couple of blocks of each other:

1. The EXTREMEly-weighted end of the huge crane at the Main-Berry-State-Camden project (looks like buck teeth).

2. A crane at the Middle School - I couldn't tell you if the payload was coming or going (but I hope it was the latter).

Three from October 14:

3. Yet another crane - this time near the Passaic St side of the First Baptist Church - delivering what I'm guessing is a cooling unit to the church's roof. I took this (and the next two) from home.

4. A zoomed-in night shot of the roof sculpture atop 210 Main. The white streak is from a plane going by during the 6 seconds that the shutter was open.

5. This shows the Empire State Building, Hudson Yards and the parking garage of the Current On River project on River St. The two bright red lights to the right of the ESB are on the smokestack of the old paper company just across the Hackensack River in Bogota. Parts of Hudson Yards appear to be out of focus, but that's actually due to whatever's emanating from the PSE&G facility in Ridgefield by the NJ Turnpike (the two sets of red lights on the right.............notice that the "out of focus" sections are directly above those smokestack lights).

One from October 19:

6. The new 95 Anderson St fits right in the historic block, don't you think?

Four from October 23:

And three of them are from the same scene in the B&W Bakery window.

7. Here's the full PANO view:

8. This is a PANO view of the NY Times story from 2006 in the middle. Click it until it's readable.

9. While I was reading it, I noticed a bee landing on the woman's forehead and shot this one at point-blank range. He stayed there a long time (probably wondering why his stinger couldn't penetrate an old lady's head).

10. A block east of B&W on Hackensack Ave sits an old car dealership building, just north of Burger King and on the other side of the street. I looked into the locked front door and this is what I saw. Most of what's on top is just reflection of the street behind me, but the top middle part has to be some sort of mirror because it shows the checkerboard floor and me standing by the door.

The last two are from October 28:

11. Taken from home, this shows nice Fall colors on State St, just south of Passaic St.

12. Also taken from home, this shows absolutely no colors at all.........but it does show the Hunter's full moon AND that white dot on the lower left, which is the largest planet in our solar system (and you know which planet that is).

1. I shot this looking east at 6:46pm yesterday. I couldn't see the whole rainbow when standing inside near the window, so I opened it and stuck my arm out almost as far as I could and shot a wide panoramic (almost north to south) with my phone 7 or 8 times.

This shot was actually almost twice as wide - it included the Middle School - but I had to crop them all because of too much non-linear arm movement on both ends. Besides, I really only wanted the rainbow - which wasn't very bright - but was now centered.

The clouds on the horizon must be the cold front moving through. I've never seen one that was that clear before AND seemed to be connecting both ends of the rainbow.

2,3. Six or seven minutes later, I tried to get good shots of each end of the rainbow. I like the Sears one better (cloud color is WAY better that the other one), but that other one has something else going on. The Modern 1 and 2 (Fort Lee twin towers near the GWB) are reflecting the setting sun, but 2 is directly in line with the sun and REALLY reflecting it.

4. Five minutes later, here's all that's left of the right side of the rainbow. I don't recall ever seeing a strong-colored piece of a rainbow "suspended" in the air like that.

5. Now that all the action to the east is finished with, it's time to look west, where the sun has just set, but is still illuminating clouds.

6. At that moment, I noticed it was drizzling and that the colors shown in the previous picture were reflected in the roof puddle.

Fun shoot........

Took a walk around the building yesterday................

1. The south-facing view from Anderson St

2. The east-facing view from the other side of the RR tracks near Walgreens

3. The northeast-facing view from the RR tracks

4. The north-facing view from behind the Hackensack Market

5. The west-facing view from my kitchen. It appears that someone from Guatemala has already staked a claim to an east-facing apartment with a view of my kitchen.

6. The Guatemalan flag - the scroll says "Freedom - September 15, 1821". I happened to take this shot two days ago on Saturday, September 16. Now you know the real reason the flag is there.

Anyone notice a very blue and cloudless sky yesterday morning that suddenly got invaded by clouds coming from the east?

That was the outermost band of clouds from Hurricane/Tropical Storm Lee (see first pic - Hackensack is at the bottom and Manhattan is in the distance in the lower left).

The delineation between the two sky sections was rather striking, so - before I realized what it was - I took the shot.

Today, I found the satellite view (second pic) - taken yesterday afternoon. The outer band had moved further west by then, so I'm glad I shot this when I did.
