Geodetic control survey points support the production of consistent and spatial accurate data for surveying and mapping. Permanent geodetic monuments provide a consistent coordinate system and serve as the basis for computing lengths and distances between relative positions.

See also: Work of the NJ Geodetic Control Survey (http://www.state.nj.us/dep/njgs/enviroed/oldpubs/bulletin46.pdf)

The full "station" list is here: http://www.state.nj.us/dep/njgs/enviroed/oldpubs/bulletin48.pdf (Hackensack is about midway through the document).

It would interesting to know how many are remaining.  Benchmark hunting (https://www.geocaching.com/mark/) anyone?

Surveyors use these benchmarks as reference points when doing land surveys.

there's one in the railroad abutment on First St, east side of the street, embedded in the stonework.
