Your previous post in this thread agreed that the yard was down by River St. Are you now saying that the Hudson River Line had another yard just a couple of blocks to the west?

Assuming this new image IS the River St yard - a bad name for it since River St didn't exist when the yard did - my thought was that the tracks have just crossed the river from Bogota, heading west, and the offshoot tracks are going to the yard.

If that's accurate, the scene is looking west.

Photo: The Public Service "yard" by River St?

Description:

Public Service of New Jersey,  Trackage:  Main Street Line Terminal and Storage yard between Hudson River Line (PROW), looking East toward Mercer and State Streets, Hackensack,  New Jersey.

Another picture has popped up on eBay that I think brings us back to that "yard" that was in the River St/Mercer St vicinity......minus one possible mistake in the above description.

That description mentions Public Service, the Hudson River Line, and the yard, but it says it's "looking East toward Mercer and State Streets". It would have to be looking west.

Hackensack Discussion / Six pix of the nabe
« on: August 27, 2010, 06:26:06 PM »
Today was just a real nice day to walk around and record the neighborhood, so here are a half-dozen things that caught my eye:

1. Stick to your diet sign?
2. The last Magician sign (back of building)
3. This billboard was near #1 and #2 (uh oh)
4. I could read what the first layer on the green said: "Green Guard".........duh!
5. Why half-staff?
6. An interesting look right in the midst of the Anderson St stores

Good question.

I wasn't sure, so I emailed Rudy's..............no reply.

I was walking around the neighborhood today taking pictures, and remembered your question as I was passing Rudy's, so I dropped in.

One of the owners only knew that they took over in 1989, so we went to the experts - the regulars at the bar. Here's what they came up with:

The name "Rudy's" began in 1971, but "Sam's" didn't immediately precede it. For a year or so prior, it was known as "The Bullpen" and before that it was "Sam's".

If it's in the 1876 Atlas, I would think it existed before then and apparently it did - around 1873, according to the below review.

Here's the building (420 and 422 Union St) today and back then. They both have 6 windows on the second floor front, but with different spacing.

Below those images is that review, taken from "Industries of New Jersey: Hudson, Passaic and Bergen counties", by Richard Edwards, Historical Publishing Company.

I seem to recall seeing something to do with horses in that 1876 Atlas at that location. I also seem to recall the name "DeBaun", so I searched my hard drive and the below image came up.

Note that it says, "Union St   Nearly opposite Anderson Park".

I'll take a picture of the front of the current building tomorrow to see if there are any similarities.

I didn't realize that the title "truant officer" got an upgrade............too much "Little Rascals", I guess.

The name on the badge is Edmond Ames. Any of you truants ever get nabbed by Mr. Ames?

Here's another from last February:

Description:

Here is a great photo of the White Manna (Mana) hamburger restaurant in Hackensack, NJ, one of the original "fast food" restaurants.

This is a color photograph of the original hand painted black & white photograph by noted photographer and artist Allan Teger, noted for his work on Art Deco and Americana images.

The photo is new, still in the original shrink wrap with the photographer's label at the back.

The photo is in a mat with beveled interior edges. With the mat, the piece measures 8 x 10 inches.
