THE GINGERBREAD CHILDREN
by Frank Avellino
An original, one-act adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale, “Hansel and Grettel.” This dark, psychological play places Hansel and Grettel at the rise of the 16th century European witch hunts. Is it chance that the children end up at the strange little Gingerbread Cottage, or is it Fate? It is a meeting that will change the European world and destroy the lives of thousands of innocent women for decades to come. This play is not a children’s show.

The roles are:
FATHER:
A soft-spoken, well-meaning but desperate, frightened man, about 40. An opportunist.
STEP MOTHER:
She is a good ten years older than Father; quiet, distant, uncomfortable with children. She is stalwart, stout in figure, but has a timidly amiable disposition.
HANSEL:
Looks mid teens; a lean and handsome young lad. Bright-eyed, optimistic, sensitive, but not as keen as his sister, Grettel.
GRETTEL:
Looks early teens, small but adorably plump, still with baby fat. A bit stinging in personality; and she supposes to know a great deal.
OLD LADY:
She is ancient-looking. Gnarled and wrinkled, hunched over, dressed in a scheme of multi-colored rags. She’s quite insane.
