I just launched https://IAintJustMusic.bobleafe.com - a photoblog I've been working on for the last year-and-a-half to compile, but was actually almost 60 years in the making.

The title pretty much says it all and the main page explains the rest. I could just as well have called it "The Kitchen Sink".

I've posted a couple of the shots on this site before. Some others weren't allowed, but (don't tell the boss)..........I allow them.

If you can make it through this blogstrosity, great, but it's a lot to ask because I've created it as sort of a book (it's sequential, going back as far as 1957).

The blog's comments sections are open (he says, hesitantly).

This was from Monday night, July 10.

It lasted about a minute - just long enough to do a 3-photo stitch.

A full rainbow from McDonald's to the Sears shoe department (is that where they get what they put in hamburger buns?).

For the last 3 years of the 70s, I lived DIRECTLY across the street from Luigi's (and right next to the firehouse).

I think it's been there since 1948. I don't think I ever took a picture of the neon at night, however.

Hackensack Discussion / State St repairs begin
« on: July 12, 2017, 06:34:05 PM »
I'm not going to follow this job down to Essex St, but I can at least post what I've seen in the last week or so from home. If anyone else takes some shots that they happen to see elsewhere on State St, please post them.

(1-4) Although State between Ward and Passaic will remain one-way, they started chopping up part of the sidewalk and road right next to 40 Passaic on July 5.

(5) By July 8, someone had moved one of the large arrow signs over one lane - the lane where traffic was supposed to go - so it now became an obstacle course that was mostly an inconvenience for buses.

On Sunday the 9th, I walked over to 40 Passaic to see what they did to a street that I thought didn't have to change. The sidewalk's been halved and a good chunk of the right lane now has a curb in it (6). I don't know what that's for. The work continued around the corner onto Passaic St (7).

(8,9,10). There's not much left of the State/Passaic island.

On the 10th, the State sidewalk got new concrete and the adjoining new curb area got pounded (11). By evening, the sign confusion returned (12), but only to people in my building whose apartments faced State St.

On the 11th, the new curbed-in area got concrete (13), while on the 12th (today), the island only got the washings of a dirty cement chute (14). The truck left without pouring any cement. Odd.

They're right at the corner of Railroad and Mt Vernon.

BTW - the little one is the original (check the photo dates) and it's got a big sidekick now with one tusk.

Anyone remember a picture of a marble (or granite) elephant in Ridgefield Park that I posted 6 years ago?

Well, he's now accompanied by a stylized friend with one tusk.

It didn't even rain.

After doing shoots of fireworks that are towns away, it's always an upgrade to shoot Hackensack's from blocks away. Here are some from last night. The last one was taken as all the smoke headed south..............blocking my view of the Macy's East River fireworks (that's OK - it was too cloudy to see them anyway).

I also made a short video out of pieces of 5 even-shorter vids. I'll put it on YouTube and post it here.

I noticed that the fireworks were a lot quieter - no BOOMs at the end of them. Did the city's dogs complain to the Council?

I went out on the roof expecting to shoot Saddle Brook's fireworks and - if I was lucky and the weather was clear - Paterson's on Garret Mountain.

What I got was a half-dozen towns' fireworks - all within a quarter head-turn..................I didn't know where to shoot.

I'd line up one town's display and another one would shoot off something better. I can't tell you what town belongs to what shots. It was like Photo-Whack-A-Mole.

But I did get some good stuff.

The third from the last one includes a local landmark that's located atop a structure on the SE corner of Passaic and Summit. The last two are from that mystery town that I've been trying to ID for years. Wherever it is, it's never listed in the paper, but it shows up behind the high-rises every year. Since it started and ended later than the other ones, I was able to concentrate on it and do some long exposures. If you look closely on the first one, it appears to show someone on a balcony.

The west side of the high-rises gets a really good (and fairly close) show every year, BUT WHAT TOWN IS SHOOTING OFF THOSE FIREWORKS?

Here are the State St signs and their scintillating messages:

Easy shoot...........both were directly out west from me - practically side-by-side - and I could just sit in a beach chair on the roof and fire away. The first two are the only ones I'm sure were from Maywood. You can see the one shot that has both towns displays in it (and part of 29 Linden). I think the two whited-out ones were the finales for Maywood and Paramus, respectively. Otherwise, I just bounced back and forth between the two towns.

After it was over, two lonely guys sitting on benches in Anderson Park at 10:15pm texted each other, wondering where all the noise came from.

Another night, another rainbow (and other cool sky shots)

The last 5 were taken last night within a 10-minute period about an hour after the first one and the setting sun lit up each Fort Lee Modern nicely (and that Teaneck tree!).
