Yeah - what we used to call cleats, which were put on to forestall uneven heel wear. You meant "heels" rather than "soles", right? Otherwise, you'd sound like a tap dancer.
The black leather square toes that you refer to were appropriate to wear with white sweat socks and black chinos with pegged pant legs and a belt on the back or two on the sides.
When I was in 7th grade at Holy Trinity, there was an 8th-grader who wore those leather lightning square-toe loafers (and an exaggerated version of the hair style you mentioned above). And you KNOW pegged pants were NOT permitted at HTS!
I had forgotten all about those little useless belts in the back.
