Hackensack — Members of the governing body discussed forming a snow committee to assess the city during inclement winter weather.
The Mayor and Council discussed forming a snow committee to assess the city during inclement winter weather. The area has been experiencing a severe winter this season with various snow storms. Interim City Manager Anthony Rottino, during the Committee of the Whole meeting on Feb. 18, asked the Mayor and Council to consider forming an official group.
Discussions addressing the proposal took place during the Committee of the Whole meeting on Feb. 18.

As of Thursday there were many streets where cars had been parked for weeks and where snow drifts remained. Heath Place, for example, between MHD and the Esplanade had cars and snow banks at both curbs, limiting traffic to one way. Cars leaving the Parker School and heading east would start up Heath and then have to back out of the street to allow westbound cars to pass.
Callers to the DPW were asked to call the HPD to have the vehicles moved and callers to the HPD were told to call the DPW. Speakers at the February 19 Council Meeting complained about the lack of coordination between the HPD and the DPW where residents were ticketed for not moving their cars and when they did, there was no snow removal activity. I don't know about a snow committee, someone in the city just need to take charge of the effort.

You hit the nail right on the head,Whitey.
I don't know if many people remember the Blizzard of '47, but it dumped over two feet of snow on the region right after Christmas Day. The City Manager at that time was a gentleman by the name of Wilder Rich. As city manager he was in charge of the City operations including snow removal. The snow removal efforts after this blizzard were considered poor and the City Manager was fired.
From that point on for the next thirty years or more, it was well understood by the succeeding managers, ie. Reilly, Squillace and Lind that a good part of their managerial abilities would be judged by snow removal.
In the 1960's, Tony Iurato became police chief while Joe Squillace and Wilbur Lind ran City Hall and the snow removal operation coordinating the efforts of the DPW and whatever City agencies came into play..
They all lived in town and worked non stop until the streets were cleared.
If the Council wants to form a committee, that is fine as long as their function is oversight after the snow removal effort is completed. Otherwise it is incumbent upon the Council to insure that the City Manager and upper echelon staff who should reside in Hackensack have a chain of command in effect and recognize that snow removal is an around the clock job until completed. Enough said.
