Prospect  girl searching for classmate, Janice Bellochio...anyone know her?
Also seeking Frank Schaberg and his younger sister....(Kathleen?)
Still seeking Bonnie France,  and Dominic Pisano....
Sandra Tumac, Mary Ann Hyer, and Robert Holmes (Teaneck)... Would anyone know how to find a roster from Sister Rita's first grade class in 1950?
Also two girls named Frances and Kathleen (also from  Teaneck) and a boy named Vincent...
just hoping...

I can't tell you how to reach any of these people, but I can tell you that:

- Helen Schaberg was in my class (1953-1961). I think she is/was a nurse. If you find her, let me know. I have some reunion pictures for her, but haven't been able to locate her.

- also in my class was a Frances, a Kathleen, and a Vincent from Teaneck.....Frances Uliano, Kathleen Higgins, Vincent Marinello

- Robert Holmes died in 2007. There was a Mike Kelly column written about him in The Record on April 21, 2008, but it seems to be available only through pay services. Perhaps you can email Mike for it (KellyM@northjersey.com).

This was written in his blog the next day:

Honoring a waiter

Many readers asked about my column yesterday on Robert Holmes, a waiter at Amarone Ristorante in Teaneck who died suddenly last year and is being honored at the restaurant with a special bench and a plaque with his trademark greeting to all patrons as he handed them a menu:  "We can talk. Nothing is written in stone."

The dedication of that bench will take place this Sunday, April 27, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Amarone's, 63 Cedar Lane, Teaneck.

I think the older shot is taken a bit to the south, because there's a dirt road in the foreground, running left to right.  I think that's Grand Avenue.

It's too short a distance from Main. If I shot from Grand, I'd be doubling my distance from Main. The K&M intersection and the Kinderkamack incline would appear smaller and much more distant.

I brought a printout of the old image with me to put myself in the right spot. If you look to the right in my picture, there's a driveway that pretty much coincides with what you say is Grand Ave. It doesn't appear that there was much need for a driveway back then, so it may have been a path, perhaps leading to someone's front door.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: The 2010 Holy Trinity Carnival

Here are some images from this evening just before sunset.

Bonus (of sorts) - a link after the last picture for a semi-dim video of everyone's favorite ride - the Zipper.

A detour through the sewer:

OK - here's my entry and the original for comparative purposes.

Of course, the roads are a lot wider now. Other than the coincidence of the two nearest poles being in almost the same places, the thing I notice are the trees in the left background: they elevate as you get closer to the left edge. That could be another coincidence, but the upper parts of trees are subject to a lot less change over time than whatever's at ground level.

I'm anxious to see the other possible location images.

Well, that's certainly a legitimate question.

Whenever I see a card from that period that says "North Hackensack", it usually shows a scene in the area just north of Rt 4 (or where Rt 4 would be, had it existed back then). Conversely, I've show cards from the same area that were labeled "Hackensack" and someone mentions that it's River Edge.

While the road in the center and its incline scream "Kinderkamack north of Main" to me, I'm not as confident about the rest of the scene. If only there was a "Total Wine" store (or a Foodtown) in that area to the left of that road.............

As I once posted elsewhere (assuming it WAS Kinderkamack), it looks to me like the photo was taken from the southern boundary of the New Bridge Landing Post Office, looking north.

I'm gonna try to get there tomorrow and take a picture from the same spot. If you or anyone else feel it's really elsewhere, post a shot of your location so that it topographically looks like this card.

Let's see what we can come up with.

Of the three roads mentioned (Kinderkamack, Main, Grand), the only one with an incline is Kinderkamack and that incline is visible only when you are facing north.

3533
I'm inquiring about the street in the distance, with a white picket fence running up a low incline.  Could that be Kinderkamack Road north of Main Street ?

Uh, yeah - that's why I wrote "Kinderkamack & Main" in the post's title.   :D

Hackensack Discussion / The 2010 Holy Trinity Carnival
« on: May 05, 2010, 04:21:36 PM »
Come one, come all! It's carnival time!

The annual Holy Trinity Carnival opened last night in the church parking lot and continues until this Saturday night.

I went over there this afternoon and took cell pictures of all the big attractions:

A carnival goer's favorite sight: an open gate and no one in the ticket booth..........so I snuck in.

A couple of other Hackensack residents saw me and did the same.

I'm not quite sure what this ride is, but it showed lots of tomahawks and an indian trying to kill a bison. Sounds like fun! (no wonder they won't let adults in).

Next was the Foxitani TenPlex with all screens showing "The Ten Commandments".

The fun never stops.

This is called "The Dragon Wagon". I'm not sure who drives this wagon, but since it sits in a lot owned by the church (and since there's a new pastor), one can only speculate.

Ah, the dreaded "Slide of Sin". We all start up there in the heavens and have nowhere to go but down. I took this picture at the bottom of the ride, so you can guess how far down I am (hint: I had to wear asbestos shoes).

Lastly, we come to the Zipper. It's situated right by the Slide of Sin because the zipper leads to more sin than almost anything else (or so we were taught at HTS).

On a steamy night few years ago, I took a picture of the Zipper in action. Something about the image actually reminds me of another occasion (or two) of sin!

Scary stuff!  (not really)

Currently River Edge, of course.

Cardpath: Catalpa Ave, Hackensack, to Belgium.

They were at Teterboro last year.

I saw them then. They had something to do with a ceremony for the dedication of a ship on the Hudson during Fleet Week, I think. When they were done, they came in from the north and flew right above the PV RR tracks and Linden St, heading south toward Teterboro.

This was at about 9:15am. I think they took off from Teterboro because I saw them go back there later. If so, they came north and then turned east before Passaic St. I didn't see them until they were past the Hackensack river, but I sure heard their very distinctive engine sounds.

The video has a very dark spot in the middle. It's from shooting at too slow a shutter speed at a too-bright sky. Because I was using a monster lens and was shooting at 96x, I was trained on a pinpoint of sky and if I tried to change the shutter speed, I would have lost the visual. Better to have a faulty visual than none at all.

By the time you see them bank to the right, they're probably past the Hudson River. With binoculars, I could see them behind Manhattan heading south.

Later that morning, I heard them again and took a couple of slide stills as they headed toward Teterboro.

Anybody know what these upward-propped aircraft are called?

Guess what? ALL photography is reflective.

So are most titles that begin with "As the...".
