Fortunately, I'm told no one was seriously hurt though they may have lost a dog.
The building is being torn down tonight, sadly. It was listed on the Bergen County Historic Site Survey.
R.P. Terhune Building. Vernacular with Italianate elements. The Beers Atlas of 1872 lists Terhune as "Hardware, Builders Hardware, Architectural Implements, Coal and Wood, House Furnishings, Goods." The building at 8 Bridge Street was used for auto repair.
It's also very unfortunate that many residents will be displaced and that the Rodizio is gone. I believe they had been doing very well.

From my living room, I was chasing a plane and found a fire at 3:48pm. An hour later, I could see the flames.
I just got back from the scene, where they started tearing the building down on the Bridge St side just after 11pm. I'll try to get back there in the morning, but it may just be a big pile of rubble by then.

Is there any local effort to assist those residents displaced by this fire? If you have any information please share.

I have been advised that donations of clothing, non-perishable food and school supplies will be accepted at the Civic Center (behind City Hall) from 5:00 to 6:30 tomorrow evening. The twelve affected families are to meet with City officials tomorrow evening for assistance. Thank you in advance for any help you can give

I am WAY behind in my editing. Expect today's shots tomorrow.
The wall section being torn down last night was nowhere near as bright as I've had to make these images. Tripoded exposures were between 1 and 6 seconds long, so there's no stop-action on the machinery or falling debris.
It was very sad to view the one remaining interior wall in apartments with visible kitchen appliances and what looked like children's drawings still displayed - normal life one day and carted away as rubble the next.
And the entire bulding WAS just a pile of rubble this morning...............

Here today --- Gone tomorrow.

Glad to see some kind of relief effort.
Thanks, Bob, Regina, Gene.

New location for drop off of donations is St Anthony's 72 Lodi Street. Beside a number of adults, a five year old boy, five year old girl and eight year old boy are among those in need. I believe it is at 7pm.

Phew! Got it done. These were taken around 10am today.
Behind 76 Main are 6 and 8 Bridge St and they also seem to be affected. I didn't read them, but they both appear to have red notices on their doors which I guess are the same "unsafe structure" notice that 76 has. 6 appears to be a business and I think 8 may be mixed use.
6's "Diesel Intellect" sign seems to have previously said "Bergen County Democrat" (the newspaper?) on it.

From the city's site: http://www.hackensack.org/headlines/?FeedID=887
Apparently, they saved the dog.

Ol' Homer remembers another big fire down in that same area about 35+ years ago. It seems that there was a big old horse barn behind Breslin and Breslin and Poors that had been abandoned for many years. One fateful evening in the late afternoon that building went up in flames causing quite a ruckus in the area. The Channel 7 traffic helicopter spent quite some time there; but, finally left because of the heavy smoke condition.
Another bit of history up in smoke. Maybe some of the old maps would show this barn.

Are you talking about the old Dance Hall that was behind the National Hotel (now General Poors)?

That be the place. I think that it was originally a horse barn before it became a dance hall. The resurrection of
a dollar a dance joint across from the new County Administration complex might be a novel approach to making Downtown a 24 hour a day activity center. Just a thought.

And here's the dog. No small consolation, apparently.
