Hackensack Discussion / Photos: Electric Symmetry............almost
« on: April 25, 2011, 03:45:50 PM »
I looked out my LR window this morning and saw two PSE&G repair trucks on Ward St by the E lot - nothing unusual there.

Two minutes later, I only saw one truck and it was turning around and backing up one-way Ward.............unusual.

Something must be going on on the other side of my building, so I walked across the roof, looked down, and saw this (first picture).

I cropped it to get a better look at what they were doing (second picture). It reminds me of work being done in bay of a space shuttle in orbit.

I cropped it again to get a look at what's in the buckets and side bags (third picture).

I took a grand total of two pictures. The first one just showed the guys in their buckets, but this one showed some interaction between them.

I wish I had taken more.

There were two police cars parked 100' or so behind them. Somebody nearby started shooting off what sounded like oversized bottle rockets. If the cops had looked up, all they would have seen was a lone figure standing on the roof - me.

I had what I needed, so I went in and got to croppin'.

All three images below are larger, so click on them for max effect.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Spanish-American-War-Uniform-Pants-Harry-B-Doremus-NJ-/310312562940?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item484011f0fc

Description:

Up for bid is a pair of Captain's pants from the Spanish American War.  These pants are original and they were worn by Captain Harry B. Doremus of Hackensack, N.J.  The pants have his name inside although it is very difficult to see.  In the proper light and at the right angle it is easy to see his name near the inside pocket lining of the pants.  The pants are extremely well made and are only slightly soiled.  Captain Doremus was a decorated Spanish American War and World War I hero, having received the distinguished service cross.  Captain Doremus was born on April 30, 1876 and served during World War I and served in the Spanish American War and the Cuban conflict.  He called Hackensack, N.J. his home.  He had a great impact on the community of Hackensack if you read newspaper accounts of World War I.  They named the American Legion Post in Hackensack, N.J. after him.  He was killed in action on October 27, 1918 only 15 days before the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918 on a battlefield near Verdun.  It is reported that he was killed by either a German sniper or from machine gun fire to the head.  Captain Harry B. Doremus is a true American hero and these were his pants.  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.  These pants are also available for local pick up in Northern N.J.

The cell antenna array seems too close to your residence. People are going nuts protesting proposed antennas that will be hundreds of feet from the closest house and more than 100 feet in the air. Were you considered expendable when that location was chosen?

I've been ranting about the stupidity of this cell antenna installation for years, so you'll pardon me if I choose not to resurrect the subject in this thread. If you want to read about it, you can go to my site and use the Gallery index on the left to scroll down to Hackensack. Click on that and go down to the fifth from the bottom image/writeup.

On a cheerier note, it's Springtime at the library:

1. under on Hudson St

2. by the river at that boat company on S. River St

3-5. under on S. River St

6. emerging from under 80 and expecting to be frisked

The scene in Img. 2271 made me wonder what was on the other side of the wall that was being anchored by those steel backing plates, what would come crashing down if some evil resident undid the nuts? The device on the wall directly under the emergency light also caught my eye. A switch? A door bell?

I think you are referring to the number "7" that hangs there. I may be the only person you know who occupies the 7th-floor of a 6-story building.

No one here would consider whoever did such a "dastardly" dismantling to be evil. Any evil would be on the part of the installers of what you see below.

Maybe it's time to shed our Riverside Square false front and resurrect Frankie's Market or a Pine Brook Auction, Rt. 3 Drive In...

Hell, I'd settle for the old Hackensack Drive-In (minus the inspection station) that you could watch from the Rt 46 bridge. Better yet (and speaking of Rt 46), put the old Rt 46 Drive-In there - that was a great drive-in.

The people in the Oritani Motel could watch the flicks (until THAT gets torn down).

From my living room, I've taken a lot of pictures over the years of Kipp's Bend and the trees of Teaneck behind it, so I thought I'd reverse the process. The Kipp's Bend access point in Teaneck is at the northern end of Terhune Park on River Rd, where you also can pick up the Hackensack River Greenway Through Teaneck.

The first picture shows all the information to read about Kipp's Bend, along with old maps and pictures, but it also shows one very perplexing image: if you look in the water at the Teaneck side on the Bend, you can see a face.

The second picture shows that it's.......Arthur Godfrey! What the hell is HE doing there?

I could find no mention of him anywhere and can't imagine why he would be there. I'm pretty sure he didn't ditch his plane in the river after he buzzed the Teterboro tower in 1954, so what could it be?

Anyway, since I could see this area so clearly and directly from home, I wanted to get a clear shot of my building from there - easier said than done. The terrain and the tree branches just made it really difficult. The third picture was the best I could do and it's fortunate that I didn't wait until the leaves were in full bloom.

On a side note, this shot is proof that the cell antennas on my building - you know, the ones that aren't supposed to be visible - CAN be seen from as far away as the next town!

I walked a bit north and found a clearing big enough to let me try another stiched photo - this one made of 6 hand-held images. Considering I didn't bring a monopod or tripod, it came out surprisingly well with only a couple of minor background glitches.

You can see (L-R): the Court St bridge crane, the Bergen County Courthouse, Foschini Park, the Prospect Ave high-rises, the YMCA, the First Presbyterian Church steeple, and Kipp's Bend.

Be sure to click it to see it full-size.

I walked a little further south on the Greenway, but didn't get far because the path was ponding from the 3-4" of rain we got the previous day. Some other time.

On the way out of Terhune Park, I made sure to get a picture of the Park Ness Monster.

everyone should have their own family shopping cart...

It appears that Sears has that franchise locally.
