I was thinking about bells too, but it seemed odd to me that bells would be placed in the back of a church.

Holy Trinity Church celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, but the current building is not the original. Information provided by Editor in this thread: - http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php?topic=530.0 - indicates that the current building was dedicated in 1932.

Holy Trinity Church is such a great structure to photograph from all sides. These three photos were taken in the back.

Does anyone know the function of what's shown in the first picture?

Bob's Stores doesn't sell furniture - just clothing.

Are you thinking of Bob's Discount Furniture - the place that sells cheap, crappy furniture and has that idiot guy on the commercials who can't stop BOB-ing his head up and down like a true Bobblehead?

Check this out:

Thanks.

I know you're quite familiar with these two entities and have seen this image many times before, but have you ever thought of a Jim Carrey movie when you saw it?

The first four pictures were taken right by the river, the fifth on Main, and the sixth on a very uneven-looking Anderson St, which appears to have a downhill component and too many wires and streetlights (one is on) above it........and the yellow lines don't come close to lining up before and after the tracks.

City getting boat ramp into Hackensack River

Thursday, April 7, 2011
The Record

HACKENSACK — The city will soon get a boat ramp into the Hackensack River for use by emergency responders, City Manager Stephen Lo Iacono said this week.

The boat slip will be built as part of the Court Street Bridge replacement project that is under way, Lo Iacono told the City Council during their Tuesday night meeting.

He said county officials and project contractor Joseph Sanzari agreed to pay for the construction. He said the city would be in charge of paying for required state Department of Environmental Protection permits and an engineering study, which he said would cost about $20,000.

"We've had a couple of false starts on this project in the past," he said. "Money has been an issue, and DEP, and proper location."

The ramp will be used only by emergency services in the city and in surrounding areas, and will not be open for general public use, he said.

Lo Iacono said the ramp will allow boats to get into the water faster if someone falls in or flooding forces evacuations near the river.

It looks like an impaled Midas muffler with a brush stuck in it.

Does anyone know what it is or what it represents?

I found two more - one on River St and a two-for-one on Main St:

10 days 'til closing! Hurry in for thousands of bargains! (no checks allowed and the self-checkout machines no longer function, but Bank of America is sticking it out until the end)

Close examination of these photos indicates that you can still buy Coke and eggs..............mmmm! Sounds like breakfast!

To be fair, lots of aisles had stuff, but nothing says "slow death" better than photos of the two most barren aisles in the store.

Come on down and pay your respects. You have until April 15.

I noticed that I took a bunch of photos of signs on my extended shoot yesterday, including a sign about signs:

According to these signs, it'll cost certain segments of the population $2.00 less on particular days of the week to use a crosswalk (don't laugh - it'll happen someday):

How do I know that? I asked this person:

However, I forgot to ask the consultant where the missing letters on these two Main Street businesses are:

Speaking of missing letters, we all know the Bowler City sign with the changeable messages, but did you ever look at its other side?

Got a dirty hand?

Gotta make the Editor happy:

I wasn't aware that there was a new high school in town:

Enough confusing signs for you here on Anderson Street?

This is a compressed shot. I was standing on the NE corner of Union and Anderson about 3 blocks away, taking a picture of a train coming into the station and blew up this part of the picture when I saw all the signs.

Time to sign off..........

The last photo is of One World Trade Center - about 15 miles away - and is a bit oversharpened.

I love the window picture. I wonder what's living in there.

I'm told that the black rhino lives there because it's close to his job.

Hackensack Discussion / Down by the river
« on: April 03, 2011, 08:58:24 PM »
I went out this morning to take ONE picture on Main St and got distracted enough on the way that I wound up with 147 shots taken in two towns.

As I headed south on Main, I passed the YMCA and looked left to the river. The sun was shimmering on it. I always see that from home, but never from up close, so I headed down Passaic St.

I walked behind White Manna and took the first photo. The next river access was two doors down, where the palleted mess in the second photo caught my eye.

Continuing south, I encountered a black rhino in front of Ricca Auto Body (third photo). How long has this thing been there? I hadn't noticed it before.

When I got to the Midtown Bridge Approach, I saw that the Circle Brake property is now fenced-in. I was gonna head back up to Main, but decided to take some shots of Bowler City and the Ice House for some reason. It turned out to be a good move...........all of the rest of the photos here were taken on that detour.

The fourth photo shows one of my favorite birds - a mockingbird - screaming for his life because he just landed on a sticker bush (ouch!) right at the entrance to Bowler City (Actually, he was warbling his entire repertoire and you can hear some of it below..............I don't know what happened to the focusing).

I decided to walk across the Midtown Bridge and took a sharp right into the park in Bogota (Olsen Park?). I walked the short paved path and beyond so I could get a clear shot (fifth photo) of the old County Jail, the Courthouse dome, the Church on the Green steeple, the carcass of the Court St Bridge, the USS LIng, and the Susquehanna tracks across the river.

I followed a dirt path that brought me to the tracks and found four tracks crossing the river at that point instead of two (sixth photo).  Are they old trolley tracks or old RR tracks with newer ones built right next to them?

In any event, the old ones begin and end at the river banks. I wonder why they're still there.

Now backtracking, I encountered a couple of geese swimming toward me. One is shown in the seventh picture. The other got out of the water and started to take a couple of steps toward me. I doubt it was because my camera looked like a slice of bread.

After crossing the bridge back into Hackensack, I noticed that traffic and a runner appeared to be heading toward the Johnson Library (eighth photo).

The ninth photo is a closeup of a window in the Circle Brake building - decrepit, but cool-looking.

By this time, the light had shifted and I never got my Main St shot.
