Hackensack Discussion / Re: Mature Trees being cut in Borg's Woods
« on: October 14, 2015, 07:03:30 AM »
According to Facebook postings, the County is making a TEMPORARY construction road (basically a logging road), just to reach Coles brook and pull some branches out of the stream area.  And the area of Coles Brook where they are working is NOT part of the County property, it is owned by homeowners, and the County doesn't know where their property line is.  So all the destruction was completely unnecessary.

Well, there's a new County Parks Director, and a new major project screwing around in Borg's Woods.

According to the Borg's Woods Facebook page, earth-moving construction vehicles have plowed a corridor 300 feet deep and 15 feet wide, completely removed of all trees and brush.  This starts 100 feet in from the Byrne Street entrance. And this may be to create a new trail/roadway system capable of supporting vehicles. Environmentalists are in an uproar, everyone wants to keep Borg's Woods a passive trail system; no intensive use.  Have any neighbors been consulted ? Any city officials been consulted ?

It's actually built with an engine able to spout the water 25 feet high.  However, there was a design flaw by the architect, John Cohen.  He made the pool too small, so winds would blow the water out of the pool. There needs to be a certain radius from the spout for the pool size.  So they adjusted the height lower. It still blows out, so I guess they adjusted the height even lower

Hackensack Discussion / Re: What is it?

There was a news article about this. It's a floating boom, one of four or five dislodged by the Hackensack Fire Dept in conduction with the Riverkeeper Organization.  The source was a bridge in Hackensack further south. This one "got away".

I notice that "The Vue" under construction on Polifly Road in Hackensack at the Hasbrouck Heights border is not using light-weight wood construction.  There's big steel i-beams in there, and the framing is tacky thin steel 2 x 4's.

Not sure if this is solving the problem, because everything else in the finished apartment can burn, including furniture, carpets, hardwood flooring, etc.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Best places in NJ to start a business

oh, I disagree that East Orange should be last.  It's amazingly quiet compared to how it used to be. Streets that were full of kids 20 years ago are quiet and empty. The street scene is vanishing.  It seems that most houses now are owned by senior citizens.  Population is down, crime is down. The building department actually does their job, not like Newark or Irvington.  Taxes are up, of course. Builders are eyeing land near the train stations.  East Orange has a future.

Worst place, I would say, is Irvington.

Daddy's on South State Street was great for a while, a place to buy your food, sit at a table and eat, and it was good food for a good price. Always busy in there. Then I went there one day, and it was surprisingly empty.  All of a sudden there was a waiter directing me to sit, I should have left, but I actually ordered food. And then he was hanging over me with a pepper grinder, asking if he can add some fresh ground pepper to my food.  Really ? At a blue-color burger joint ???

Me and all the other customers just wanted a place to get a good cheeseburger and fries and a soda for lunch, and pay normal price.  Instead, they though they could convince their lunch crowd to get the same food and pay more for it, and then even more to tip a waiter.  That was the last time I ever went there, and same for everyone else.  It went out of business. All I can say is ==== KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER BASE.

the old neighborhood moved out, or it might be more accurate to say that they got old and died, and their kids chose to live elsewhere.  Too much industry, too much mixing of land uses, too much dividing houses into apartments.

It just reaches a collective point, and then folks say "no thanks, I'll move to the west side of Hackensack, or out of Hackensack entirely.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Changing Hackensack's Form of Government
« on: August 20, 2015, 11:00:45 AM »
If there is an opportunity to change government, I would encourage something new. How about having each of the 5 wards elect one person directly, and then have a few "at large" city officials that represent the entire city. This would at least guarantee that each part of Hackensack has representation on the City Council.  It's not perfect, but it's an improvement.  If these reformers really want democracy with a small "d", they should support this.

Also, just want to point out that changing the elections to partisan will lock out all Republicans and Independents from ever getting elected. More and more people are rejecting party affiliation, that is the trend, so why lock it up for one political party.  I find that very objectionable, and for the record, I dumped my party affiliation (Democrat) 6 years ago.

And whoever are the Party bosses of the Democratic Party will control Hackensack under the proposed change.  And Party bosses are notoriously corrupt (both parties), and even if they personally aren't' corrupt, I have some objections to political folks not from Hackensack, who's primary interest is NOT Hackensack, to have so much control, so much influence, over what happens in the City of Hackensack.

I'm not against a change of government structure if the change is for the better, it's just that the change shouldn't be towards granting power and influence to political types from outside of Hackensack, and perhaps even outside of Bergen County, to be the real power in the City of Hackensack.

It's 75 pages.  Hackensack is currently Faulkner Act, I believe.

I haven't read the Faulkner Act either, but here it is.

Good idea.  The few remaining properties on the Prospect Avenue high-rise strip that can be built on would better serve the city as residential development.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Playground trees taken down
« on: July 21, 2015, 01:22:01 PM »
Yes, seriously.  It's a growing problem. Insurance companies are hitting home owners and commercial property owners with huge rate hikes if they maintain large trees.  And when someone buys a house, they will come by and before even insuring they will demand limbs be cut, and other things.  I can easily see a playground as already causing an insurance hike, even without trees, and they would fear an insurance claim from a kid tripping on a tree root
