Getting back to the original post, this article sheds some light on what is going on in "the desert":

Bergen Mall Makeover

Plans also call for the construction of a 148,000-square-foot store on the east side of Forest Avenue, near the Hackensack border. That section will include two parking lots near Shepherd Way.

A 58-foot buffer with evergreens, maple and oak trees will be created between the mall and the back yards of Maywood residents who live on Locust Drive.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Teterboro Airport
« on: March 14, 2005, 09:40:27 PM »
This post was sent to me by Mr. Paul Griffo and is reprinted with permission.  It was altered slightly for grammar and continuity.

In light of the following article, shouldn't we again renew our concerns about security at Teterboro? Shouldn't we be calling for the closing of this real and present threat to Bergen County?

It's time to step up the calls, e-mails and letters to the newspaper editors.  Security at Teterboro is a joke and Bergen County is a target rich area for any terrorist at any time.  Who wants to be in the football stadium when Al Qaeda drops a Gulfstream V onto the 50 yard line during a game?  Or in Hackensack Hospital, or the offices of the Bergen Record?  You don't have to hijack a plane out of the airport, you just have to fly one into it!  (or into a target seconds from the airport, like the stadium, Hackensack Hospital, GW Bridge, Empire State Building, etc.

Government Report on U.S. Aviation Warns of Security Holes
By ERIC LICHTBLAU

Published: March 14, 2005

WASHINGTON, March 13 - Despite a huge investment in security, the American aviation system remains vulnerable to attack by Al Qaeda and other jihadist terrorist groups, with noncommercial planes and helicopters offering terrorists particularly tempting targets, a confidential government report concludes.

Intelligence indicates that Al Qaeda may have discussed plans to hijack chartered planes, helicopters and other general aviation aircraft for attacks because they are less well-guarded than commercial airliners, according to a previously undisclosed 24-page special assessment on aviation security by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security two weeks ago.

But commercial airliners are also "likely to remain a target and a platform for terrorists," the report says, and members of Al Qaeda appear determined to study and test new American security measures to "uncover weaknesses."

The assessment comes as the Bush administration, with a new intelligence structure and many new counterterrorism leaders in place, is taking stock of terrorists' capabilities and of the country's ability to defend itself.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: City Council Election (Updated 3/8/05)

With respect to the last post, please be aware that directory assistance (411) has no record of a Manobianco in Hackensack.  There is no listing of Umberto Manobianco in New Jersey.  I suspect it is a fictitious name.

Hackensack Discussion / Candidates' debate
« on: March 09, 2005, 03:24:07 PM »
I'm informed that the League of Women Voters traditionally moderates debates in local elections.

The League has provided me with a list of several moderators in the area.

If the parties agree to debate, I would be happy to volunteer some time to help coordinate it.

The parties may contact me to discuss this matter further:  editor@hackensacknow.com

Hackensack Discussion / Re: City Council Election (Updated 3/7/05)
« on: March 08, 2005, 09:04:28 AM »
The following is an opinion piece that appeared in the March 8, 2005 edition of The Record.

The Record's description of the slates that Hackensack Mayor Jack Zisa and his City Council allies have run on as "bipartisan" is unfortunate ("Zisa won't run for reelection," Page L-1, March 2).

Like several other Bergen County municipalities, Hackensack has a non-partisan form of government, as well as non-partisan elections. This is not an unimportant distinction.

Bipartisan coalitions are, by their nature, temporary arrangements that eventually yield to purely partisan politics. The ideal behind non-partisan government is to keep party politics out of such things as hiring people to fill potholes. It doesn't guarantee integrity in government, but the ideal is worth preserving, especially in a time of extreme partisan heavy-handedness at the county level.

Although I do not live in Hackensack, I am troubled to read that a new slate for Hackensack has been "put together" by the chair of the Hackensack Democratic Municipal Committee ("Two from Zisa ticket opt out of race," Page L-1, Feb. 25). I hope this is not an indication of things to come.

Non-partisan government in Bergen County appears to be in the cross hairs. If Hackensack falls, can Teaneck be far behind?

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Who uses Hackensack Now?
« on: March 07, 2005, 05:00:59 PM »
I encourage BOE candidates and City Council slates to post their respective agendum in these forums:

City Council Election

School Board Election

A short list of priorities would be helpful.  Better still, candidates might want to post how they propose to handle some of the important issues like education reform, redevelopment, Main Street, etc.  I hope that candidates make a genuine effort to engage public participation in the election process.

I agree that these boards provide a convenient forum for discussion by residents and candidates alike.  However, there should also be an actual live debate for the benefit of those without internet access.  Also, virtual debates have some obvious limitations.  Voters need to meet the candidates in person.

I will use my mailing list to announce any debate.
