Hackensack Discussion / Re: Sun Powered Schools
« on: March 03, 2005, 08:06:28 PM »
Excerpt from another article about a solar project at Bayonne Schools:

The project will lower the BOE's energy bill. The board will also receive a significant rebate for the project.

"I can't wait to see the meter running backwards," BOE president William Lawson said at a board agenda session this week.

Get article here.

At the Leauge of Municipalities Convention a few months ago, a few solar panel companies got a booth to promote this idea.  Seems like solar may finally be viable.  I think the BOE should at least entertain the idea.  Perhaps there is more grant money available.

This is the image that Commerce Bank chose for a mural at their new branch on River Street.  The images is a street scene: State Street, near Banta Place.  Circa 1890.  It's a colorized photograph.

Hackensack Discussion / Who uses Hackensack Now?
« on: February 26, 2005, 10:43:31 PM »
For anyone who may be curious, here are some statistics for Hackensack Now:

Traffic is rapidly increasing. In February, more than 2700 unique users visited Hackensack Now.  For year 2005, more than 4600 unique visitors came to the site.  Considering there are only 42,000 people in Hackensack (about half of that within "computer using age"), I'm encouraged by this number.

The vast majority of users view the message boards.  The message boards were viewed more than 10,000 times in the month of February alone.  (This means that 2500 unique users are returning each month about 4 times).   Only a small percentage of those viewing the boards actually post messages.

Bandwidth for the month of February exceeded 1 gigabyte.

For some reason, Wednesdays generate the most traffic.  On average, approximately 250 unique people visit the site on this day.

About 30 other internet sites link to Hackensack Now.

Thanks again for your participation.  As always, if you have any suggestions about how I can make this site better serve the community, please let me know.

Free Classifieds and Announcements / New Feature: Karma
« on: February 26, 2005, 12:33:40 PM »
Karma is a built-in function within the Hackensack Now Forums that allows a person to award and be awarded points for good forum postings.

The karma points (or cookies as some people call them) are listed on the left side of every member post, under their Member ID, Title and Stars. The format looks like this:

Karma: -1

Any registered member can receive karma at any point after they've made their first post.  Click here to register.

If you press the "clap" botton  on a person's post, their Karma count will increase by one. Some people call this giving a person a karma cookie.  You may also debit Karma by pressing "boo".

There is a limit on granting karma. You may only award a person a single applaud within a one hour period.

The spirit of Karma is to show appreciation for a post that a person has made. If you feel that a certain post is above average or especially helpful, then hit that applaud link under the member's id for that post and award them a cookie.

I'll typically deduct karma for disparaging remarks against other people.  There are more artful ways to criticize than to be hurtful. Insults are easy. Naturally, all personal attacks will be deleted as per our policy

Enjoy.

Al

Hammer, you're entitled to your opinion but I think your insult toward Ms. Hurwitz was wrong and unnecessary.

I'm debiting karma from your account.  :)
