Hackensack Discussion / Blue law exceptions (Can sell on Sunday)
« on: February 23, 2005, 02:17:32 PM »
Items a business can sell on Sunday in Hackensack:

(*indicates that I think this may be a good business on Main, Anderson, Hudson or elsewhere in Hackensack.  One advantage:  many other municipalities like Paramus don't allow any business on Sunday. Example: a hardware store on Main Street may be the only one open for miles around.  Some merchants on Main Street already take advantage of these exceptions.)

Events & Calendar / Tamburitzans at Bergen Academies! (March 12th & 13th).
« on: February 23, 2005, 12:08:57 PM »

The Duquesne University Tamburitzans present a new production each year. During the two-hour program, the ensemble encapsulates the joys of life and the beauty of  the cultures which it artistically represents.

The multitude of cultural influences from the countries and ethnographic regions of Eastern and Southeastern Europe, including Armenia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Carpatho-Rus', Croatia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine - and many others - presents a virtual mother lode of possibilities for the performing stage.

The Tamburitzans have capitalized on this cultural wealth for over 65 years, returning the dividends to their audiences.

Wherever the Tamburitzans perform, their stage becomes a kaleidoscope of sight and sound. Songs are sung in many languages and dialects. Footwork is articulated in hundreds of styles. Folk instruments such as the bandura, tambura, gadulka, and cimbalom are plucked, picked, bowed and hammered.

Costuming alone is a great reason to see a Tamburitzans show. During the course of a single performance, over 400 original and authentically reproduced costumes are worn by the performers. Each costume design is meticulously researched for authenticity, then created for the stage. The result is a carousel of style and color from the first note to the final stomp.

To order by phone, call 1-877-TAMMIES (1-877-826-6437).  Tickets are $21. Show time is 7:30 P.M.

Editor's note:  For those who don't know, the abbreviation used above (IMO) was modified from the commonly used chat room abbreviation "IMHO" which is short for "In My Humble Opinion".

Apologies to Pattie for deleting the post.

Pattie's post:  "It was exciting to see someone from Hackensack on the show...but i am sorry to say that I agreed with Randy...John has no vibrato, no tone and no strength with weak phrasing...no projection and no stage presence....hey, not everyone is a relative or a friend...sorry, i was not impressed."

Yes, I deleted this post last night and slept on whether or not it would ultimately stay. As much as I hate it here, it will stay.

John, to his credit, held himself out to national criticism by competing on American Idol. It's not like he didn't ask for it.  Nevertheless, I initially deleted the post because I think at this point he's probably been through enough and is feeling pretty badly about not making this city as proud as he had hoped.  For the record, the vast majority of us are very proud.

The other reason I deleted Pattie's post was because this was a "feel good" post with everyone expressing hope and congratulations.  It was, more or less, a "greeting card" of positive sentiment.

Question:  If someone handed you a get well card to sign for your co-worker, would you write, "I never really cared for you anyway. Please drop dead" ??

While Pattie's post is obviously tactless, I'll leave it in place.

Al

Not a bad run John.

I'm sure the craziest rollercoaster ride pales in comparison to the highs and lows of American Idol.  Are you happy to be on solid ground again?

Best wishes for your continued career.

Free Classifieds and Announcements / Re: City's Official Web Site
« on: February 17, 2005, 12:19:17 AM »
Someone mentioned to me that a high school student wrote an opinion piece  that was critical of the City's decision to hire someone (me) to maintain the City's official website.  It doesn't appear on North Jersey Media's site (as far as I can tell) or in the February 16th edition of the Bergen News (published every Wednesday).

If anyone can find it, please email it to me and/or post it as a follow-up post to this topic.  Discussion on this issue is welcome.

Thank you.
