Title: Signs around the city
Post by: BLeafe on April 04, 2011, 03:50:33 PM
I noticed that I took a bunch of photos of signs on my extended shoot yesterday, including a sign about signs:

(http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/2397/embroid.jpg) (http://img851.imageshack.us/i/embroid.jpg/)

According to these signs, it'll cost certain segments of the population $2.00 less on particular days of the week to use a crosswalk (don't laugh - it'll happen someday):

(http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/1081/img1899190020ff.jpg) (http://img202.imageshack.us/i/img1899190020ff.jpg/)

How do I know that? I asked this person:

(http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/5985/img1983psychic.jpg) (http://img10.imageshack.us/i/img1983psychic.jpg/)

However, I forgot to ask the consultant where the missing letters on these two Main Street businesses are:

(http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/9569/img19891997missinglette.jpg) (http://img851.imageshack.us/i/img19891997missinglette.jpg/)

Speaking of missing letters, we all know the Bowler City sign with the changeable messages, but did you ever look at its other side?

(http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/760/img1901bowlercity.jpg) (http://img40.imageshack.us/i/img1901bowlercity.jpg/)

Got a dirty hand?

(http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/2031/img1894handwash.jpg) (http://img543.imageshack.us/i/img1894handwash.jpg/)

Gotta make the Editor happy:

(http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/9645/img2009uppermain.jpg) (http://img841.imageshack.us/i/img2009uppermain.jpg/)

I wasn't aware that there was a new high school in town:

(http://img859.imageshack.us/img859/2076/img2005gatewayhs.jpg) (http://img859.imageshack.us/i/img2005gatewayhs.jpg/)

Enough confusing signs for you here on Anderson Street?

(http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/5161/img2015andersonst.jpg) (http://img560.imageshack.us/i/img2015andersonst.jpg/)

This is a compressed shot. I was standing on the NE corner of Union and Anderson about 3 blocks away, taking a picture of a train coming into the station and blew up this part of the picture when I saw all the signs.

Time to sign off..........

I found two more - one on River St and a two-for-one on Main St:

I have seen those signs a million times but never like that. Nice captures.

Thanks.

I know you're quite familiar with these two entities and have seen this image many times before, but have you ever thought of a Jim Carrey movie when you saw it?

Could Bruce really be "The AlMighty Bed King"? Mr. Sears definitely had the upper hand over Mr. Roebuck, a shameful public display of power.

I met Bruce once, a long time ago. That's an image of his in his swaggering days, the disco era no doubt.  He closed down his store on a highway to be in Hackensack.

He said there is nothing better for his business than luring in Sears customers.  He doesn't even have to provide parking, they can walk across the street.

Does Bruce still own and run that store ?  And I wonder what he think's of Bob's.

Bruce is still going strong, apparently, according to http://www.brucethebedking.com/about.nxg (http://www.brucethebedking.com/about.nxg).

YEP, that's where I bought my bedroom set, Bob's.  And my living room set, and my dining room set.  I only needed to see their commercial ONCE, and I was completedly sold and never forgot it.  No gimmicks, no sales, no nonsense, just straightforward low prices and quality products.   Bob must be reading my mind, and if he puts everyone else out of business I don't care.

Bob's Stores doesn't sell furniture - just clothing.

Are you thinking of Bob's Discount Furniture - the place that sells cheap, crappy furniture and has that idiot guy on the commercials who can't stop BOB-ing his head up and down like a true Bobblehead?

These signs are perfectly readable if you're already on the lot somewhere between these cars and the back end of the building:

Yes, of course.  Bob's Discount Furniture is the big competitor of local furniture and bedding stores everywhere. Not to be confused with Bob's stores, which even I did as a customer.

It's interesting how many consumer complaints they have.

I am very happy with all my Bob's furniture, and they even came out to fix the dining room table that I damaged a few weeks after buying it, when I was moving it.  They didn't charge me a dime for it even though it was completely my fault.  I would recommend them to anybody looking for intermediate quality furniture, at rock bottom prices.  I'm not ready to call for "Bob for President", but if I wanted a business leader to run this country, I would certainly vote for him before The Donald.

Chicken Magician lives! And turned Chinese!

I thought it folded when it left the Rite Aid strip, but it's popped up a bit north on Linden in My China Cafe. I don't know how long it's been there.

Look at those cigarette prices next door! It's been a LONG time since I bought cigarettes, so I'm shocked they cost so much. I used to buy cartons for half of that.

I'll bet those prices will look cheap in a few years.

1. Just the right-sized door

2. I had no idea what this was.........maybe they manufactured Cheer laundry detergent specifically made for the uniforms of the best players on the NFL team from St. Louis?

Well, not quite. BTW, Mr. Editor, there are a bunch of YouTube videos for this place if you're interested.

3. Violators of what?

4. Woolworth?

5. How did we miss THIS event? I don't recall Holy Trinity ever honoring saints like this - it might have made some of us closer to the church if they did.  ;)

(hey - the girl in the middle has calf muscles in the front!)

The first two images were in the window of a vacated store on Passaic St between Linden and First St.

The third image advertises an available apartment on Park St. Based on placement of one sign component, it HAS to be for a ground -floor unit.

Also on Park St, the name on the fourth image sounds like a place where aging Cadillacs live out their final days before heading to the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX.

If you're not familiar with the Cadillac Ranch: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2220

Springsteen's lyrics for his song of the same name: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/b/bruce_springsteen/cadillac_ranch.html

Fifth image: saving the best for last, this double billboard on Passaic St by the tracks delivers once again!

Update: there's no sign of Chicken Magician in My China Cafe anymore. It just vanished, like.............magic. Anybody know where it went? Maybe the Hackensack Market Pharmacy/Bakery? I'm sure they have room.

These are pretty self-explanatory.

A sausage shake is bad enough, but the second combo is a bit creepy - especially if you don't immediately notice the line at the bottom of the right sign.

Even then, it's questionable.

You are correct Sir.

How bizarre.

(In retrospect, I'm wondering if it is just a placeholder ad which might be better than nothing at all).

I know there's one of these signs high above Main St, just south of Anderson and facing Sears, but I just recently saw this one from home. It's right next to the tracks by Passaic St.

Think this sign will result in any boat donations?

If this was done by a vehicle on Union St, it would be leaning to either the right or left. If the vehicle was on one-way Ward St, it would be leaning backward.

So how..................?
