Hackensack Discussion / Re: Masked citizens - the Coronavirus
« on: January 05, 2021, 07:23:49 PM »
BREAKING NEWS:

Mayor John Labrosse opened tonight's City Council meeting by confirming rumors that Deputy Mayor David Sims violated the Covid-19 lockdown at City Hall in the last week of December by entering the building with a relative who had tested positive for the coronavirus. The building on Central Avenue is closed to visitors.

The mayor called the lockdown violation an "unfortunate incident," and said that no one condones Sims' actions. The relative is believed to be Sims' daughter, who is married and doesn't live with the councilman.

As a precaution, the mayor said, the 2nd floor of the building was emptied of employees.

Just goes to show you someone as young and in shape like Bella Hadid can eat the garbage served at White Manna and shrug it off. I and many others avoid those burgers like the plague. I get such a kick out of remembering lines of customers waiting for the few seats available. LOL

Turns out the general election results for the Nov. 3 presidential election posted by BLeafe didn't tell the whole story.

According to the Bergen County Clerk, voter turnout in Hackensack was far better:

There were 26,928 eligible voters and 18,350 votes were cast for a turnout of 68.1 percent. The overall voter turnout in Bergen County was 75.1 percent.

Still, Hackensack doesn't have anything to be proud about. Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters, and although the ballots are a challenge to fill out, even if like me, you have been using them in local, state and national elections for years, I can't imagine why more than 8,500 eligible voters in the county seat didn't cast ballots.

Nearly 13,000 votes in the presidential election would mean about 10,000 registered voters in Hackensack didn't vote at all. Is that possible? Yes, Hackensack voters are famously apathetic when it comes to council and school board elections in April and May, but what's the explanation for so much disinterest in what was probably the most important election of our lives? Bewildering, troubling and downright ridiculous.

After I posted this, I continued reading The Record story on "The Sack" as reprinted in the Hackensack Chronicle and was surprised the owner of an eatery called BSO Wings on Main Street claimed "development is squeezing out small businesses and making room for chain stores like Starbucks."

Is there a Starbucks downtown? The only Starbucks in Hackensack, as far as I know, is on Essex Street, near the hospital, despite the wish of residents like me for one downtown.

And The Record story also claims "some residents" fear "gentrification will push out struggling businesses and homeowners."

Am I wrong that Main Street businesses have been struggling for many years, even before the apartment building boom started, especially after the Borgs closed The Record's landmark building in 2009 and decamped to Woodland Park?

THE SACKING OF HACKENSACK (WITH APOLOGIES TO TROY)

I worked at The Record of Hackensack for nearly 30 years, starting in 1979, and moved here in 2007, and I have NEVER heard the city referred to as "The Sack."

I first saw that ridiculous name on a mural that was painted in a passageway off Main Street, what, a couple of years ago.

Now, The Record, which has been turned into a laughing stock by Gannett, claims "longtime residents have always known the city as 'The Sack'" and attributes that to "several Main Street business owners." The paper claims this inspired the Main Street Business Alliance to officially adopt the nickname and pay for a billboard plastered with the name on Route 17.

I guess Hackensack residents can only be thankful they don't live in Fort Lee, where residents are urged by business interests to "Be Fort Lee" by a large sculpture of those letters downtown.

Last week, I tried to drive on Main Street, and found a couple of blocks were closed or undergoing reconstruction and conversion to 2-way traffic. That brought to mind "the sacking of Hackensack."

I will never in a million years refer to Hackensack as "The Sack," despite all the exhortations of a business alliance that has profited mightily from downtown redevelopment -- a story The Record has ignored.

I took a photo of the Demarest Place mural with "THE SACK" in September 2019. Artist Damien Mitchell shows jazz tenor saxophone legend John Coltrane in the letter "S." Presumably, Coltrane played in a jazz recording studio in a home on Prospect Avenue that was later demolished to make way for expansion of Hackensack University Medical Center.

I just became aware that PSE&G has been estimating bills during the Covid-19 health emergency:

As for the $25 million contribution to build a surgical tower at the Hospital That Ate Hackensack, wouldn't the money be better spent on educating people about what foods are linked to cancer, including nitrates and nitrates used to preserve hot dogs, bacon and other cured meats? So, then instead of Medicare and Medicaid shelling out tens of thousands of dollars for cancer operations in a new surgical tower and enriching doctors and the CEO of that medical monstrosity, people can live longer and disease-free lives.

Mr. BLeafe:

I can safely say that in all my years at The Record's building on River Street, I never moved my bowels there during a work shift or at any other time. I did all my business at home.

Sincerely,
