I remember Santa and his sleigh all lit up and strung between the Packard's towers. I could see it every year from my street - Cumberland Ave - in Teaneck (yeah, I lived in Teaneck - sue me).

Does anyone remember a small, open-air trampoline park on the Packard's lot near the tracks circa 1960? I think you paid by the half-hour of usage.

Hackensack History / Main St. Memories
« on: February 01, 2006, 05:11:14 PM »
I used to cruise the drag from about 1964-1969 and remember when it was PACKED on Thursday nights from the court house to Sears and beyond, with many cars having New York plates. Generally, we'd make a bunch of orbits (two-way street then) between the library and the court house and after every dozen or so, it was time to go to McDonald's in River Edge. This process was repeated over and over, finally ending with my friends finishing the evening by hanging out at the Fairmount Diner (Fran the waitress!). Of course, we wore our Nicky Newark jackets from Kartch's.

I had (among others) a jacked-up, customized '63 Grand Prix with a name painted on the sides of the front quarters ("Prix-fection") AND a '64 Chevy Impala Super Sport at the same time.

One night, a Hackensack cop stopped me for a loud glasspack muffler on the Prix and yelled that he "didn't want to see this car on Main St again tonight". "Yes sir, officer", as I went home and came back with the Super Sport and smiled at the cop.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Rainbow over Hackensack

I can see my building in that first picture.

Since this is my first day as a member, I don't know if this is considered spam or not - I'm sure Editor will delete this if it is - but my first contact from him was a result of an image of mine that was published in The County Seat showing the YMCA and a rainbow landing on St. Joseph's Church in Bogota.

Click here to see my pictures.  Click "Hackensack, NJ" on the left and you'll see 90 pictures of Hackensack, including the rainbow over the YMCA.

You might also find a band or two (thousand) on the site, including Hackensack's two big rock stars - originally known as Joe Linquito and Leslie Weinstein - Joe Lynn Turner and Leslie West.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: HOLY TRINITY ALUMNI

I attended both Holy Trinity schools -  the old one where the parking lot is from grades 1-4 and the "new" one from grades 5-8, graduating in 1961.

We actually had an 18 1/2 year reunion in December 1979 in the cafeteria.

I remember seeing the very tall netting for the Hackensack Ave golf/driving range right by the exit off Rt. 4 west to Hackensack Ave. south.

Hackensack History / Re: Hendrix at George's Club 20 (Hackensack)

Jimi Hendrix/George's Club 20

Hendrix did indeed play at George's Club 20 and the location given is accurate (address: 20 Bridge St). At the time, he was playing guitar with King Curtis and the date is probably in the last week of 1965 or possibly the first week in 1966. I have a CD-R of the show, and I've heard that there is apparently a longer one available.

"Hackensack Blues" album

The Hackensack Blues album is a Canadian product that has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Hackensack, aside from possibly being named because of Jimi's friendship with George. I have 2 copies of that album. It doesn't say where it was recorded, though it shows a picture supposedly of Hendrix in a NY studio for "first mix".
