Hackensack Discussion / The "Dweetmania - Live at Dweet's" 1978 Album
« on: December 26, 2009, 06:23:20 PM »
The album was recorded live at Dweet's Royal Oak, 604 Main St Hackensack, on Monday, March 20, 1978.

THE FRONT COVER

The small pictures, from upper left to upper right, are:

Terry Hogan (the Hulkster?)

Roy Atkinson

Dweet

Phil Cenicola (I shot this guy when he appeared on The Uncle Floyd Show performing the same song that he does on this album - "Louie Coletti")

Peter Scance

David Scance

See the peach in the upper right corner? All graphics on the covers and sleeve were done by Peach Arts, which used to be at 817 Main St (and which did some snazzy business cards for me a decade later - where's Tom Flynn these days?)

As the graphic in the upper left indicates, the album was engineered and mixed at Fox Recording Studios, located at 9-11 Station Square in Rutherford.

Next to that graphic is a small sticker on which someone wrote the word "crazy". This was on the album when I bought it on eBay years ago.

THE BACK COVER

Self-explanatory.

THE SLEEVE 1

The small writing along the top and upper right side are Peach Arts credits. In the bottom left is the Royal Oak's Sanitary Inspection Report. In the upper right is the Hackensack sign. The city was apparently not in motion yet - it was just the "Capital City of Bergen County". The bottom line on the sign is superimposed and says "Home of Dweet's Royal Oak 604 Main Street".

Aside from Dweet, I couldn't tell you who any of the pictured people are.

THE SLEEVE 2 (not pictured)

The other side of the sleeve shows mostly a long story that's basically a blurb for Fox Studios. There's also a drawing of a fox, a small picture of Fox guys, and the studio logo.

RECORD LABELS/TRACK LISTINGS

Dweet wants everyone to know that there's no Side 1 - just 2 and 3. What a cutup that guy is!

"Louie Coletti", as I recall, was sung by Phil while wearing two sides-of-his-head face masks - one male, one female. When he sang the "Freddy" part, he'd turn to that side and "Betty" faced you on her parts. "Louie" faced you straight-on.

So here's Phil and his alternating bass and falsetto voices right from the album (Audio only):

You knew what was gonna happen, right? Yep - the Middle School Christmas Grinches struck again today, loud and often.

Of the 346 zillion nominees, the callous bunch in this office came in dead last in the No-Bell Peace Prize balloting.

I'm not even sure if tomorrow (a Saturday) is safe now.

One more wrinkle: 5 minutes after I posted yesterday, the bells went off once for no apparent reason at 4:26pm (they're usually over by 3pm) and weren't heard again until the ridiculous 8:12am reveille call that no one in the neighborhood wanted to hear on Christmas Day.

Here are today's offerings for your viewing listening displeasure - the first one's a twofer (8:30 and 8:33am):

I suppose I could have gone for the quartet of blasts at 2:42-2:45-2:50-2:55pm on the second one, but you get the idea.

You also now know when to never schedule anything at Gentile's.

Hey - I've got an advance copy of an album the Middle School is making about their holiday bells:

"Eleven", by the way, is a Spinal Tap reference to the fact that volume settings only go up to 10. ("It's one louder, isn't it?")

And so, Hackensack Middle School office personnel, thanks for ruining Christmas (and every other holiday).  >:(

Hackensack Discussion / Hackensack River Aerial Christmas Goose Patrols
« on: December 25, 2009, 02:18:04 PM »
Maybe they're fleeing the consumers in Bob Cratchit's neighborhood, but, in any event, the Hackensack geese have been very active this Christmas. I saw one good-sized squadron heading down the river, but it was too late to capture it on my cellphone vidcam.

A few minutes later, I heard another group (or the same group minus a few members) honking their way upriver and video'd that.

View My Video

Later, I saw/heard a huge gaggle of them much further east of the river heading south, but they were too far away to be zoomed in on with a cellphone. At lunchtime, from my west-facing kitchen, I saw another bunch flying south over the Park St Area. Maybe they were all the same group.........who knows - they all look the same to me.

The Hackensack Cratchits will have to settle for ground-bound turkey or ham for their Christmas dinner tonight.

Well, the Middle School Grinches have struck again! It's starting to seem a bit willful too.

Remember when I mentioned above how I had called them the day before Thanksgiving to remind them to turn the "bells" off and they rang on Thanksgiving and the day after anyway? I thought that someone had come in on Thanksgiving after I had called the police that morning because the sounds stopped around 12:30pm. That's why I was so surprised the next day to hear them start going off again at 8:12am, but those also stopped at 12:30pm.

I couldn't figure out why this happened...........until I spoke with an office worker when I called yesterday to ask them to PLEASE not repeat that mistake over the long holiday break.

She told me that the bells were set for a half-day schedule that day before Thanksgiving. That means they did absolutely NOTHING after I called that day and the bells continued to ring on the half-day schedule on Thanksgiving and the day after.

It gets worse.

After promising me yesterday that the neighborhood wouldn't be subjected to this annoying electronic bleating over the holiday break, guess what?

Yes, that was loud cursing you may have heard emanating from my building at 8:12am today when these damn things woke me up yet again on a no-school day. I video'd it 20 minutes later and called the police again. The desk sergeant was very nice and said he understood and would try to help get them shut off.

Unfortunately, he wasn't successful. But here's the worst part: the bells were on a half-day schedule yesterday. If the Middle School people merely "forgot" again, the bells would be on the same half-day schedule again today. They weren't.

This means that after I called them pleading with them to turn the bells off for the break, someone not only didn't turn them off, but actually set them to run for the full (no)school day! They rang all day long - every class! I don't know how I can NOT begin to feel like I should take these repeated "mistakes" personally.

I called the desk sergeant again, asking him to PLEASE find somebody to turn these things off before we have to hear them again all day on CHRISTMAS! He was very sympathetic and said he'd sure try.

I'll let you know tomorrow if he was successful this time. The only bells I wanna hear tomorrow are jingle bells.

Since the school may try to deny that they switched the bells yesterday from a half-day schedule to a full-day AFTER I asked them to turn them off, I taped today's noise at both 8:33am and 2:45pm.

Here are those videos. Again - today's incompetencies were videotaped (VHS) and then shot off my TV screen during replay with my cellphone:

Whether anything happens tomorrow or not, you can bet that the superintendent will be made aware of this thread. I've had it with this idiocy.

Dweets Place

Are you referring to the Charlmaree and Dweet's Royal Oak? Didn't Dweet's have a couple of name variations?

Any of you hipsters have the "Dweetmania - Live at Dweet's" album? You can see part of the cover - what fit on a scanner - here:

I'll have to take some pictures of mine and post them.

I remember looking through an old HHS yearbook once and all the students' pictures listed their hometowns.

If you have access to a similar yearbook, that might be an easy way to compile a list of sender towns.

Seller's description:

This auction features an original 1897 Allen's Hackensack, Englewood & Nyack Business Directory.

Hundreds of pages of Bergen & Rockland businesses, and their addresses.

Hardcover book in excellent condition.

Interesting to note that "Red Towers Greenhouses" on the front cover - run by yet another member of Teaneck's fabulous Phelps family - had their greenhouses on River Rd near Cedar Lane in Teaneck (Cap't John Phelps lived on River Rd) and their store at 243 Main St in Hackensack, where an H&R Block is today.

To be honest, I have no indication that the name on that image had anything to do with creating the picture. I would lean towards it being the name of the owner of the photo - maybe a student.

Even back then, a photographer would have a more professional-looking stamp or something, but would not write his/her name and address in that manner.

You did bring to my attention the fact that I put the wrong backside image with this auction. It's the one for the 1916 HHS girls basketball team. The correct image is now there and has a lot more signatures there to go through.

It's even got "1966" and "1968" written on the top for some reason. Figure THAT one out!

Seller's description:

Here is a very neat photo shows a view of the High School Class in 1918 from Hackensack, NJ. The mat frame measures approx. 14 by 12 inches, the photo is 7 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches, shows some wear and tear from the years, freshly removed from album after long storage. These were found in an estate sale box with lots of other neat old photos.

Like the girls 1916 basketball photo, this photo was taken by - or the property of - someone who lived at 50 Anderson St, but I can't make out the name.

I went over to the site yesterday to see how close they were to opening Anderson St. As you can see below, all the equipment is gone and the repaired areas are paved, albeit kind of unevenly.

I was guessing maybe a resurfacing/repaving would be needed today, but as I look out my window, I see a yellow center stripe has been painted on the street and a Parking Meter Control van is there.

Maybe they fixed the road up a bit since I was there yesterday...........I'll have to take a walk over there later and see.
