Sadly, it will never make it out of there in one piece.

If memory serves me correctly, they had a hard time bringing it up the River in the 1970's which leads me to believe that it will be  more difficult , if not impossible, to bring it back down the River in one piece. And then , of course, who would want it and who would pay to maintain it?

It has become fairly obvious that the Ling will not be an element in the Redevelopment of the Record property. Perhaps the "powers that be" in the site plan review process could suggest to the "redevelopers that be" that some sort of monument or plaque be placed on the site where the submarine now sits as a reminder of what had been a memorial to the Military in the City.
Just a thought.

it should be a part of the redevelopment.  move the area where the smaller boats and torpedos sit south of there to the area of the boat ramp and make a small easement along the river, which has to be done anyway with redevelopment, and keep the boat there.  dredge around it.   nicer area, more people will visit...

Hate to be the bearer of bad news; but, the Mayor Torres proposal is probably physically and fiscally a pipe dream. The Submarine Association members have done a wonderful job in attempting to preserve the sub and have created a noteworthy attraction for the City of Hackensack. However the time has come to face reality.
Naval vessels are  brought into dry dock for periodic maintenance due to the nature of their operation. The Ling has been sitting in the Hackensack River now for a few years less than half a century. The Hackensack River is tidal in Hackensack which means that the exterior of the Ling has been sitting in chemically laden salt water washed up the River from Newark Bay. In all likelihood there is structural damage to the hull and the Ling could regress from being an attraction to an environmental hazard.
If the Ling can't remain in it's current location and if it can't be realistically moved to an alternate location, then, sad to say there is only one realistic option.

Navy to Recover Historic Artifacts from New Jersey Naval Museum
From Naval History and Heritage Command, Communication and Outreach Division

WASHINGTON – In order to protect priceless, historic, publically-owned artifacts, the Navy will return to its collection a number of objects on loan to Hackensack’s New Jersey Naval Museum the week of Oct. 17.

There are about a hundred Navy-owned artifacts on display in the New Jersey Naval Museum.  The remainder of the museum’s collection is not Navy-owned and will not be moved.

Navy officials determined it was necessary to take this step after it was learned this past May that the owners of the land on which the museum currently resides have terminated the museum’s lease and plan to redevelop the site.  At that time, the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), which is responsible for the Navy’s 400,000+ historic artifact collection, sent a team of curators to the museum to assess the condition of the loaned artifacts, many of which are one-of-a-kind objects from naval history.  The team determined that the lack of proper environmental conditions in the museum is causing general deterioration to artifacts owned by the Navy.  Many of the artifacts, particularly those displayed outdoors, were found to have suffered serious physical degradation.

After the initial assessment revealed degradation of the artifacts, NHHC asked the New Jersey Naval Museum to provide a detailed technical and funding plan to relocate the NHHC artifacts to a suitable site, to conduct a conservation assessment and initiate conservation, and to improve accountability for loaned artifacts in keeping with their loan agreement and common curatorial standards.  The museum was not able to provide a clear plan with funding sources by the deadline, so it was necessary for the Navy to recover the artifacts to protect the history they represent.

“We share the concern of veterans whose story is contained in these historic artifacts,” said Jay Thomas, Ph.D., NHHC’s assistant director for collection management. “This step is difficult, because sharing our Navy’s history is an important part of our mission.  However, so is protecting the collection.  We look forward to a time when the New Jersey Naval Museum has found a new home for its collection of artifacts and we can again begin discussion with its managers on how to once again share Navy artifacts with their visitors.”

In the meantime, Thomas says that after the Navy-owned artifacts are returned to Navy possession, they will be fully assessed and, as necessary, receive proper conservation to ensure they remain intact and ready for display.

NHHC, located at the Washington Navy Yard, is responsible for the preservation, analysis, and dissemination of U.S. naval history and heritage. It provides the knowledge foundation for the Navy by maintaining historically relevant resources and products that reflect the Navy's unique and enduring contributions through our nation's history, and supports the fleet by assisting with and delivering professional research, analysis, and interpretive services. NHHC is composed of many activities including the Navy Department Library, the Navy Operational Archives, the Navy art and artifact collections, underwater archeology, Navy histories, ten museums, USS Constitution repair facility and the historic ship Nautilus.

Title: News to me - my parents visited the Ling in 1976
Post by: BLeafe on February 12, 2017, 06:41:03 PM
I just found this really tiny film strip (see below image). It had no info other than a date, but saw a picture of the 297, so it's the Ling and my parents toured it (as usual, my invisible mother took the pictures). I had no idea that this ever happened, but I'm sure the old Army sargeant (Pacific Theater) enjoyed it.

In the last picture, it says that if they lose the Ling for lack of donations, it will "go back to the Navy to be scrapped". Does that mean that if no one comes forward to move the sub, it will ultimately be the Navy's responsibility to do so? In a link in a previous post (http://www.northjersey.com/story/news/bergen/hackensack/2016/12/19/historic-submarine-stuck-mud/94766024/), it says the following:

Colleen O’Rourke, a spokeswoman for the Naval Sea Systems Command, which is responsible for Navy vessels, said the submarine remains the property of the museum. As the Ling’s owner, the museum would have to bear the cost of surveying the river and relocating the sub, she said.

There's no way the museum could handle that, so I guess - in a worst-case scenario - the Navy would be on the hook.

Gonna be one heck of a salvage job. According to the article, the sub is 312 feet long. Putting things in perspective, the distance from home plate along the right field foul line at Yankee Stadium is 314 feet.

The Ling has been stuck in the mud since at least 2016, so I'm wondering how flooding it made it list.

This Eye on The Record post from the end of 2016 discusses the Borgs and the Ling:

It's actually stuck in the mud, and has been since 2016, so it's leaning, not listing.

See: BORGS WASH THEIR HANDS OF THE LING:

"List" and "lean" have similar meanings, but when a ship is involved, it's "listing", irrespective of whether it's in water, mud or ping-pong balls.

Conversely, have you ever heard of someone listing against a wall?

From the Cambridge Dictionary:

Title: Re: The Ling is listing...

Forget about listing and leaning; Old Homer has come up with a solution to the Ling.
If a Hackensack property owner stores a wrecked/ non functioning vehicle on his or her property, the property owner would be in violation of the City’s Property Maintenance Code and if the violation were not corrected in a given amount of time, the property owner would be brought into court. (You can see where this is going).
In the case of the Ling, the property owner should be responsible for the removal of this non functioning derelict submarine since the property owner was responsible for bringing the submarine onto their property.
All the City has to do is have a property maintenance inspector issue a notice of violation and if the submarine is not removed in a reasonable period of time, the matter be brought to court for adjudication.
This could be the start of a new direction for maritime law.

That doesn't make sense. I'll stick with leaning, as anyone can see from the photos I took 2 years apart; same lean as before:

http://thesassonreport.blogspot.com/2018/09/first-borgs-screwed-hackensack-now.html (http://thesassonreport.blogspot.com/2018/09/first-borgs-screwed-hackensack-now.html)

But I love your idea of filing a property maintenance citation against the Borgs, though I don't think the city will do that on its own; are you ready to go to the Building Department and file a complaint????
Title: Re: The Ling is listing...
Post by: irons35 on September 03, 2018, 12:04:15 PM
well, you would be wrong.    The correct nautical term is listing...   and it is not stuck in the mud either, at least not as it was before.   you see, on the night of October 29, 2012, the Ling actually popped out of the mudhole it was in for the previous 39 years when the river crested....   when the river went back down the boat did not settle back in the depression it had been in, so it took on a 4 degree list to port.     that is where it sits today...

I happened to visit the Ling yesterday and was wondering when they had removed all the artifacts - missed it by a day.

1. Where the plaques were

2. It's not easy to make a photostitch of the whole vessel from the park side, but I got most of it.

3. In this stitch, you can see the fresh truck tire tracks in the muddy grass and on the left pathway.

You'll have to scroll the stitches a bit.

There is some talk in Hackensack that the plaques weren't stolen at all, but removed for safekeeping.... The suggestion is the veterans "forgot" this, and told police they were stolen after the vandalism was discovered.

1. From this angle, the Ling looks rather listless.........and loooooooong. This is - by far - my best shot/stitch of it.

Aside from the sub, there are 3 other projects in the picture: one new, one being renovated and one dying.

2. To be fair to the other side of the Court St bridge, I also took this while I was there.

Of course...the letter from the Hawthorne man is outdated.

Well, let's see what Reading Comprehension 101 says:

Ignoring the fact that it was written at LEAST two months ago (the lead time for a magazine - it's not The Record, you know), the man's letter was about trying to get the very wealthy to contribute mightily to the cause of saving MULTIPLE ships that are in desperate need of restoration/salvation. As an example that's literally close to home for him, he mentioned the Ling's predicament.

So unless ALL the ships in a similar situation have been saved in the week since the magazine came out, the letter is FAR from outdated.

Unfortunately, it may never become outdated...............and neither should good reading comprehension.
