Hackensack Discussion / "Pupuseria"?
« on: Yesterday at 11:43:00 AM »
I was on E. Salem, stopped at the light on Main, saw this sign I had never seen before, took a quick shot and googled "pupuseria" when I got home.

A pupuseria is where pupusas are sold.

The pupusa is a popular El Salvadoran dish made of a thick, corn tortilla filled with anything from meats to cheeses to refried beans to pork rinds. Pupusas can be purchased from pupuserias, as well as streetside vendors. Pupusas are also found in certain areas of Guatemala and Honduras.

The Christmas wreaths were installed along Main St today. The truck is pulling a trailer that had been filled with them, but there only a few left as it approaches Ward St. An assistant wraps the garland around the pole.

The steel beams tell you that I won't be able to take the first shot shot ever again from home. MAYBE the second shot will still be there, since it's right near the edge of the new building.

Since they reconfigured the lanes just north of Passaic St, a large amount of water collected at the driveway entrance (on State) to 40 Passaic St every time it rained and never drained.

Daredevil kids would cautiously cross it (they could have easily walked around it), as you can see in the below sequence.

Yesterday, it got fixed. The street was ripped up and dug out for new pipes and a drain, which is shown sitting on the street on the far right of the last pic.

It's installed now and that should be the end of that.

Big news day, huh?

Hackensack Discussion / WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T FORGET..............
« on: November 05, 2018, 03:40:16 PM »
.........TO VOTE TOMORROW, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6!!

All that jive you hear every mid-term that THIS one is the most important one of your life is finally true!

And don't overlook the Hackensack-only Municipal Question about establishing  a Municipal Open Space, Recreation and HISTORIC PRESERVATION TRUST FUND!! (personal emphasis on that last part - see ballot question below)

How many times has someone here mentioned saving and preserving some part of an historic building that has just been torn down, only to be told there's no money for it and nowhere to put it?

Passage of this referendum could provide the opportunity to change that.

That's what the "photographer" in the top row appears to be trying to do.

Her twin in the lower level seems to be trying to capture the foolishness of whatever it is going on directly above her OR maybe it's just the continued sequence of the top row.

Who knows? I just observe and document.

1. You may remember this pre- and post-demolition posting from January 2015, taken from the Hackensack River Walkway by Costco.

The rest of the photos were taken last week:

2. (also from Costco) The cranes look very far apart in this photostitch.

3. Moving around the bend in the river to the walkway behind Pep Boys makes them look a lot closer.

4. From a little further north on the same walkway, I got this long stitch of the entire scene.

5. After crossing the Court St bridge, I got this really wide stitch of the site. You can see the red top of the same fence on both sides of the image.

I may come back periodically, but I have enough projects to shoot on my side of the river.

Hackensack Discussion / Five To One
« on: September 17, 2018, 01:40:24 PM »
Besides being the name of a great old Doors' song, it's also the ratio of unavailable Sunday Services parking spaces to trucks at the Second Reformed Church after someone left a moving van parked across five spaces on Saturday evening.

After he tooketh away, the Lord caused something to be bestowed upon his windshield (third picture).

"But your Honor, how was I supposed to know that people go to church on Sunday?"

Hackensack Discussion / 9/11 sticker from The Record
« on: September 11, 2018, 08:31:12 PM »
While cleaning out a pile of papers today - 9/11 - I found a small envelope from the Record, dated 7/13/02. Inside was a 3" by 6" unused "We Will Never Forget" sticker with the famous Tom Franklin photo of the 3 firemen raising the flag amidst the rubble on the front and info on the back (see below).

It seems appropriate to find this today because the Tribute in Lights, which I can usually see every year from my apartment is not visible tonight.

I'm gonna have to get back there on a nicer day.

Before the pix, bits and pieces of several QuickTime videos are jammed together for a YouTube video.

Favorite video part: at 0:40, check out the weird sound of what looks like an asphaltmower and the worker Maypole-dancing it around a manhole cover repeatedly.

(at least that's what it looks like from 70 feet above)
