Title: Bogota view of Hackensack, 1967 (no high-rises!)

Looks a bit empty without the behemoths in the background

Great shot! It's amazing how blue the river looks too

It's amazing how blue the river looks too

I wouldn't attribute that to the river being healthier or anything - it was far worse back then.

One other problem back then was that certain color films always had a bluish cast to them and some of the background buildings show that.

Then - of course - there's always Photoshop or any other image editor. The river and the foliage look oversaturated to me, so my guess is that the seller (I found this on eBay) did a little enhancement to help sell his image.

The first file below shows the buildings between the Church on the Green steeple and the river with and without the blue cast.

File 2 is the original and in File 3, I de-saturated the foliage and the river, while maintaining the background. It's not as glamorous as the original, but it's somewhat more realistic as far as what the view probably was in 1967.

Photoshop giveth and Photoshop taketh away.

Forget the color saturation. Your mission tomorrow is to go back across the River and try to replicate the early photos from approximately the same location they were taken, only this time with the 2016 backgrounds.
That should be interesting.

Sounds like a good mission, but not tomorrow - it's gonna rain................maybe next week.

I wonder what that exact spot in Bogota is like now...might have to bring a machete to cut down some big weeds

gonna have to go on the railroad property, thats where the shot was taken from.   that pier in the foreground is off the Costco property. its still there, but busted up.  the X is where the original photo was taken from.  Tidewater sand and gravel is in the photo where Pepboys is now.

Try "virtually impossible".

River Rd in Bogota was closed south of Ft Lee Rd and a Teaneck(!) PD car was stationed there.

I explained to the cop why I was there and what I would need to do: try to approach the necessary spot from River Rd or - as a last resort - from the forbidden tracks. I showed him the before pic and the Google overhead pic. He was really cool about it, but had to check in with the Bogota PD first. I got the all-clear.

There was an impenetrable jungle between River Rd and the tracks, so it was last resort time.

There was a semi-jungle between the tracks and the river, no way to get to the riverbank and very few views of even part of what I needed to get in one shot. None of those few views were from the angle I needed, as you can tell from the pix. Some of them look like they needed to be wider shots, but what I cropped out were solid trees and foliage on the Bogota side. For the most part, I had windows and not the vistas I needed (what I really needed was a 30'-high cherry-picker railcar).

There were also obstructions on the Hackensack side, like trees and a half-century of construction.

So if you can mentally combine bits of each shot, you might be able to come up with an idea of what's transpired since 1967.

Or we can open up a GoFundMe site and get me that cherry-picker railcar.

Great pics! I really like that shot of the tracks too...looks like something you'd see in an old movie, the kind of place kids would hang out back in the day.

maybe in winter it will be easier to get the shot.
Title: The Bogota view of Hackensack, 1967 (no high-rises!) - Solved
Post by: BLeafe on June 12, 2016, 04:44:44 PM
Even in Winter, there'd still be too much wood in the way. I told the cop that a small forest fire would help.

So, here's an easier and more definitive solution. I remember shooting from the pier shown in the 1967 photo during a Costco Walkway stroll in 2014 and posting a similar shot here:

http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php/topic,2960 (right above the orange tabby)

I cropped and resized the '67 photo to match the '14 one. It turns out that the older photo would NOT have shown where the high-rises would be built. The newer one shows that it's all HUMC in that area now.

If I shot the same area today, the new Justice Center and parking garage would probably block some of what 2014 shows, so maybe I'll go back there soon and make a vertical triptych.
