Title: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project
Post by: BLeafe on August 03, 2017, 09:15:01 PM
So today was the first sign of activity on the site of the big State-Ward-Main project that I am not looking forward to. The site includes the big Comprehensive Behavior Health Care (CBHC) building, the Don Alfonso Restaurant, the Hanson Real Estate office and some Main St businesses

This morning, I heard some mini-piledriver sounds and saw the below image by the CBHC. You can see someone carrying a big borer bit. I later saw similar activity on the Ward St side near Main St. I have no idea what they were doing...........maybe planting charges for the explosive demolition of the building? What a shot that would be!

This is the separate thread where I'll post whatever I see every step of the way. Obviously, I won't be be able to see as much of whatever happens on the Main St side, but I have a very good view of the State St side from my living room and will document my vanishing river view as the new building goes up.

THE DON ALFONSO

That would be a pretty fancy name for the building.

The only name I don't want to see on it is "RiverView".   >:(

taking sample bores of the soil.

Thanks for the info, Mike.

1 - Last weekend, workers dragged all this cardboard out of the CBHC building. It sat there for a week.

2 - Yesterday, someone in a James E. Hanson truck came by and took it away.

3 - This is a wider shot showing the three main buildings: the CBHC, Don Alfonso restaurant and the James E. Hanson realty company that's not only carting away all the CBHC cardboard, but is also.............

4 - ............STILL OPEN! I saw at least a half-dozen people drop by to pay rent or whatever, while...............

5 - ............right outside their window, soil samples were being drilled out in their parking lot.

6 - A little later, a flatbed arrived to pick up the apparatus

Two months later, this is the first sign of change to the exterior of any of the three buildings.

These guys were here at 7am yesterday to basically erase the front of Hanson Real Estate. I took the third picture twenty minutes after I took the second one............all that was left of the sign was "RE". Eleven seconds later, that was gone. I took the last picture today.

1. Before the work started, they put up a fence in the Hanson Realty parking lot (but haven't closed it yet). This 3-image stitch was taken on October 1.

2. Since the gate was open, I went inside to do a 10-picture, greater-than-360-degree stitch while I still could. Some day soon, this view will never be seen again, since it might be the inside of a big building. One of the frames turned out to be out of focus, so I put my watermark there so you wouldn't notice it (yeah, right).

3. On October 12, I could see what I'm guessing was asbestos prep on the roof and the side windows of two businesses on Main St

4. By October 13, asbestos signs were up in the lot.

5,6. On the same day, I noticed vents atop one of the doors on the CBHC building. When I looked through the glass of the other door, I could see this hanging at the top of the steps.

7. Two days ago, workers were on both roofs.

I guess they're done.

The truck and the asbestos signs are gone. The roofs are clear of people and equipment and the windows on the Main St building lost their coverings.

The vents over the door are now just holes over the reflection of the First Presbyterian Church and the up-the-stairs look inside is back to normal.

A little later, an HFD Fire Prevention vehicle showed up, but I know not the purpose of the visit.

The asbestos remediation is done and a fence just went up around the project.

Can demolition be far behind?

These will be my final images before demolition starts. Since the red signs with the backwards slashes are now on all doors of the to-be-gone buildings, my guess is that demolition is imminent.

1. The view down Ward St

2. The view down Main St

3. The old view of 395 Main

4. The Main St stores that were spared - the 395 Main project fence ends to the right of EmbroidMe.

5. The State St side looks ready to go. This 2-pic stitch also shows the current 4-meters-for-3-parking-spaces view.

6. The Ward and State streets view (2-pic stitch)

7. The Main and Ward streets view (2-pic stitch)

8. The Main Street view (2-pic/1-glitch stitch)

I changed the thread name today from a longer one that only mentioned the State St side of it to the original link name of the rendering (and added "rehab project").

What's your suggestion? You're not still pushing "KNOW MORE VIEW", are you?  ::)

Title: Re: Tracking the 395 Main St rehab project

The original word I got on this was that the buildings were coming down in September. I was sure I'd miss it in November when I was unavailable and was positive that I had made it back just in the nick of time in December....................nothing.

This month, there's been occasional utility roadwork right in front on the State St side, but today brought:

1. Various fire vehicles

2,3. Fire officials going in and out of the restaurant and the real estate office.................and the water company showed up

After a couple of hours, everyone left, but I could see from home that each building had a new sign/sticker attached to it. Thinking that it might be a notice that demolition was imminent, I went out to see what they said.

4,5,6. The buildings are unsafe to live in.

they had a substantial water leak in the one building.  buildings should be coming down shortly.

Looks like somethin's gonna pop soon. Lotsa pretty Optimum trucks there the last couple of days - probably unrelated - and a big piece of equipment was delivered yesterday.

Some Creamer trucks and multiple cop cars there and in the E lot today.

Well, if you had today in the pool, you won.

The Hanson Real Estate building came down just before 10am. Fortunately, I just happened to notice when they started and shot this sequence from my living room.

The Don Alfonso Restaurant appears to be next. More later and click to enlarge:

This is THE video still of this morning's event. I have about 3 dozen small videos to edit down to one and a few hundred machine-gunned photos to wade through plus a couple of other things I shot this week, so it may be a while before I get to post it all.

Finished: See separate posts for demolition photos (http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php/topic,3662) and demolition video (http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php/topic,3663).

There've been no building takedowns during the last 3 weeks here. Most of the activity has been restricted to digging up foundations and sorting the building materials into recyclable piles to be carted away. There's also been a strong Verizon presense lately with usually two of their larger trucks in the E municipal lot with an HPD car sitting behind them, so most of these pictures are of wire work on the poles, curb hammering(?), catching a few winks, and having twice the number of excavators having 100% less work to do when only one was there.

So here's THAT photographic mish-mash (click to enlarge):

Title: Re: Tracking the 395 Main St rehab project
Post by: BLeafe on February 25, 2018, 08:38:28 PM
(I just merged the two 395 Main topics so it will be complete back to last August.)

I am absolutely BURIED in jpeg files, video components, stitches, etc., from covering another week of multiple projects. Lotsa stuff going on with the further-away (from me) projects and after a couple of weeks of cleanup of the across-the-street properties at 400 and 402 State (Hanson Realty, Don Alfonso Restaurant), that crew has started in the same lot to take down the first Main St-fronting building from the back (State St side) - 387 Main.

Fortunately, I could still see most of that building from my apartment and continued shooting.

On Friday, they broke through to Main St. For the first time - looking straight ahead from home - I could see cars on Main, which now has a big gap in the block between Passaic and Ward streets.

So I went out and did some photo stitches.

The first one was done in November and posted in this thread back then, so I did a similar one on Friday that shows the block's new gap-toothed grin.

"Grin"? Well, look at the curvature of the road.

For a little variety, I got permission to go on the first-floor roof on the back of the building that says "Embroid Me" (Thank you, Bob Testa from the State Farm office in that building.............his name's on the red-and-white sign).

This glitchy stitch shows the yellow-bricked back of my building in the upper left and how far it really is how good the zoom is on my little camera in the pix of this project in other posts.

When the crew finishes the cleanup of the 387 site, they'll start on the wraparound - Main-Ward-State - main building of the 395 project. When that's done, I'll have my widest view of Main St for a short period of time before I lose nearly ALL the reason to look out of my living room window.

I’ll get all the other stuff posted……………..eventually.

I'm still trying to organize lots of stills, create stitches and consolidate videos.

Meanwhile, these are from the last week of February:

2/23 - Some of the old steel beams that are taken away by truck are just too long to fit in it, so they have to be cut in half with a cutting torch. The showers of sparks aren't as impressive during daylight, but these were taken toward dusk on a cloudy day. In the third picture, you can use your imagination to guess what might have been ignited by the torch.

2/26 - 1. Butting heads
          2. After 30 years, I can now see part of Main St at night that had been blocked by a building.

2/27 - 1. Recycling bricks
           2. 375 Main is down............on to 389.

2/28 - 1. What's left of 389 Main (the door with the small notice from the city will show up later)
           2. The State St side of the 395 Main building (also known as 404 State St) just lost its doors (big white/red Xs).

Title: Re: Tracking the 395 Main St rehab project - End of Feb. Photo Stitches
Post by: BLeafe on March 05, 2018, 04:17:59 PM
1. Minor glitches, but an incredibly-wide view from one floor up

2.  Ground-level

3. I shot the first stitch from the roof under the SIGNS sign and the second one from the point where that building meets the Main St sidewalk. The State St side of the 395 building is gone, except for a low section of yellow and dark brown brick wall.

This stitch made me realize that we have our own little in-line food chain going on here, because when you peel away the Don Alfonso Peruvian Restaurant (already peeled),  there's a Colombian restaurant (Noches de Colombia) right behind it. If you peel that second restaurant away, Chicken Supreme is behind that and if you peel THAT away, you still have the Poisoned Fish Store in the Hackensack River.

The lesson to be learned from this little observation? Too much rehab may wind up being the death of us all.

4. Late addition: This is a 2-photo stitch that I thought was interesting for some reason.

1-6. State & Ward

7. 395 Main (front)

8. Roof collapse as workers watch from roof across the street

9-11. 395 Main (front)

12. Ward St side

13. Door on Ward St side

14. From a distance, these looked like wrapped-up bodies that were just pulled from the wreckage and stood up. Zooming in, you can (sort of) make out faces on them.

15-19. To pass the time, I followed the adventures of this in-ground tank. They tried to get it on a truck and eventually did. It was then driven across the street and around the municipal lot until finding an arrow to show them the way out.

20. Ward St photo stitch

March 2

1. 395 Main loses its NE 2nd-floor corner office roof.

2. This is why I shot from home last Friday.

3. Just what we need on a cold, snowy day - a truckload of Pepsi. At least it puts some color into the picture.

4. On this snowy, windy day, a young woman had been walking along the site fence on State St, looking at the piles of rubble and then crossed the street to walk west away from it. She suddenly stopped, turned around, dug a camera or phone out of her bag as the wind blew her umbrella inside-out and took a shot.

5. I'm still getting used to this view I suddenly have of Main St (and that I may not have anymore after a few months).

March 3

1. Now that all the buildings are down, I took a walk around the perimeter to see what was there. This one was taken through the State St fence looking toward Main. I think this yellow-brick chunk was part of the last section of wall to be taken down on the State St side.

2. Yet another interesting-looking tank

3. Lots of good catches made by the fence on Main St.

4. This is where the 389 Main door ended up - slightly worse for the wear.

5 & 6. The excavator was used to drag all the big stuff off the sidewalks inside the perimeter fence and back into the pit. Later that day from home, I saw one of the workers sweeping the small stuff into the pit so that he and another worker could move the fences in and let people use the sidewalks again.

7. OK - all the buildings are down. Can we sneak in a nice park there or that new school that’s been mentioned recently (two-stories only, please) before the 5-story monstrosity is built? Somebody save me!

Title: Re: Tracking the 395 Main St rehab project - THE DEMOLITION VIDEO
Post by: BLeafe on March 08, 2018, 06:25:17 PM
This video is comprised of 12 little destructo-segments - 7 of them from my living room (a block away) - that I shot from 2-28-18 to 3-3-18. One segment is out of sequence because it just didn't fit visually in the correct order and another was a spoken-word insert I made on 3-8-18 that explained something in the previous segment, using a still photo (and John Mellencamp).

On the Main St side, I had to hold my camera on top of the fence which was taller than me. With my arms fully extended and not being able to see the screen, I guessed where to put the flat camera on the round bar and didn't always maintain building perpendicularity to the ground.

The last short bit is sorta like fingernails on a blackboard, but metal teeth on a sidewalk is less annoying.

I didn't get EVERYTHING, but I did what I could.

For best effect (and countable views for me), crank up the volume and please view this video on YouTube. Just click on the View on YouTube icon at the bottom of the little screen (or copy/paste the URL in another window). Otherwise, it doesn't register as a view.

Title: Re: Tracking the 395 Main St rehab project - SPARKY & the BEAM BITER
Post by: BLeafe on March 13, 2018, 05:42:24 PM
With all the buildings in the 395 Main St project having been torn down with only the cleanup left, I find myself with lots of little video bits that just didn't fit in elsewhere, so I have no real use for them.

Determined to find a way to inflict them upon you anyway, I separated them into two piles: one having to do with all the steel beams and the excavators that had to separate them out from the rest of the rubble to be recycled and the other one having to do with Sparky - the guy who has to cut the overly-long beams so they fit into the containers that haul them away.

When applied to steel, his cutting torch provides all the excitement that this crashing bore of a video can muster, making these two piles of vidbits into one big pile of flick.

Personally, I like the thumbnail better.

Title: MIDPOINT: a 360º+ photo stitch from the pit of the 395 Main St project
Post by: BLeafe on April 19, 2018, 02:10:03 PM
Since the last of the bricks and concrete chunks was carted away yesterday and they started adding............something (electrical conduits?).............to the Main St wall today, I'm guessing that the halfway point of this tear-down-build-up project has passed.

I didn't know that when I visited the site yesterday and stood in the middle of the pit and took 15 to-be-stitched-together photos while turning in a circular manner, but today I consider my timing to be fortunate: this photo marks the end of the demolition (and I'm half-done). It starts and ends facing Ward St and the glitches are minimal.

Title: The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the 389 Main Project
Post by: BLeafe on May 10, 2018, 04:04:14 PM
As mentioned in the previous post, the groundbreaking ceremony for the 389 Main project took place today (though the first 3 pictures were actually taken yesterday):

1. Parts of the E lot that were closest to the site were off-limits to all but the ceremony attendees.

2. A man who was walking on State St stopped to check out the banner.

3. I decided to document how the tent fit in the grand scheme of the neighborhood on the only late afternoon of its existence here.

4,5. An hour before the guests started arriving today, an effort was made to gussy up the reserved spaces. It doesn't appear to have helped. In fact…………

6. Just before the ceremony started, I got an idea of how many people might attempt to throw dirt at me.

The speakers (in order):

7. Jon Hanson, Founder and Chairman of the Hampshire Companies (and inducted just last Sunday into the New Jersey Hall of Fame)

8. Max Dorne, Director of Development for Claremont Companies (the people doing all the destruction/construction)

9. Bill Hanson, President of NAI James E. Hanson (the Hanson Realty office on State St was the first building knocked down for this project). He spoke for about 3 seconds - I was lucky to get this one shot of him.

10. John LaBrosse, Mayor of Hackensack

The Groundbreaking:

11. This shot includes the 4 speakers, most of the City Council, a certain HackensackNow Editor and 7 people I don’t know.

12. The 4 speakers and 2 people I don’t know

So - for every picture - you expect me to provide cross streets and other information for every background building that has nothing to do with any of the rehabilitation activities in this thread? There's about as much chance of that happening as there is of you sneaking in a third plug in as many days for your Record article.

Of course, if you were to give me exclusive credit for the paper's plummeting circulation.....................nah, no one's dumb enough to think that.

All silliness aside, I'm glad that you're getting so much out of this thread - it's every writer's dream.

Well, that was a riveting diversion. Now, back to business.

1. I had a lot to do on Monday, so was up early (early for me, anyway) and saw this guy already working on the site at 6:49am.

2. At 11:24am, I saw this looooooooong truck on Main St and knew that if it managed to maneuver the exit to the Ward-to-State tight road curvature, it would be perfectly-placed for a truck/site shot for a second or two as it rolled by. Somehow, it managed to back into the site perpendicularly a minute later.

3. Most people who walk by the site barely give it a glance, but at 5:54pm, these 3 spent a few minutes there. Future tenants? Still looking for a table at Alfonso's?

This is a better version of the first shot shown in the post showing Hackensack's 4th of July 2018 fireworks (http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php/topic,3743) because the 389 Main hole in the ground has been brightened to show its illumination by the fireworks. And I'll probably post it again next year to show the huge difference with the 5-story building that goes in that hole.

From August 3 - 10:

(NOTE: A couple of these observations might be a bit less than accurate...............hey - I write what I think I see)

1. Driver waits in the pouring rain.

2. I'm not sure what the purpose of these large rectangular structures is. Anybody know?

3. With all the heavy activity going on, flowers still manage to pop up.

4. Metallic shrubbery

5. Make your own caption.

6. This was a REALLY hot and humid day, so you find shade wherever you can during breaks.

7. The upper guy just noticed that the bottom guy tied his shoelaces together.

8. Tommy TwoHats

9. On-site holding cell with no roof for sun protection.............cruel (and unusual)!

10. First, the cement truck - partially visible at the bottom - fills the vat on the ground. The vat is hoisted up to where it's needed. You can see the gray cement falling out of the vat just to the right of center.

11. I have no idea what the purpose of the silver material is, but I'm pretty sure it's not aluminum siding.

12. These are still sitting there, so I don't know what they'll be used for.

13. This vehicle was moving fairly quickly uphill, so I rushed to get a shot during the one second or so that the brighter white van was the wood's background.

14. I love this shot. Lots of people in close proximity, yet each side of the fence seems totally oblivious to the other.......................ob-la-di (you know the rest).

15. The long shot looking north

16. I'm not sure, but this may be the top of that "holding cell" shown earlier. The interesting part of this shot - at least to me - is that on either side, the "not-aluminum-siding" is shown from above and behind. Now it looks like those windows with slats of rectangular glass that open from the bottom as you crank their handle. But they're not windows either, so what are they?

17. Whatever they are, here are more of them being installed.

18. Part of the side of that incline was being taken down as Woody Woodstacker did his job.

19. I think you know what this is by now and here come some more..........

20. This is a photostitch that shows the before and after parts of the top of the wall. More interestingly, it also shows where an unfortunate stitch was made that cut a car in half in the upper left on Main St. The stitch itself is OK - it's just that a car (actually two side-by-side cars) drove into the edge of the frame as I was shooting and that frame was later properly stitched by the program. Damn careless drivers!

(Scroll horizontally after enlarging to see the whole stitch)

Title: Re: Tracking the 395 Main St rehab project (Part 1 of 2))
Post by: BLeafe on August 21, 2018, 04:30:22 PM
Since I have more than 20 images, I'll have to double-post today.

1. I just happened to see this skateboarder going the wrong way on State St on August 12 and something looked a little off, so I took a shot and what I got looks like he's saluting the project, but no one's there on a Sunday. I wonder if there's something other than water in his bottle.

2. Something else looked a bit strange the next day when I saw this woman on the wrong side of the fence, looking like she's about to step off the edge. Not quite...........it turns out that she's the project's site engineer, so her umbrella is probably made of hard hat material.

3. (August 16) The thin blue pieces are styrofoam. I don't know its function, but all this wall work was done in advance of concrete being poured there on Saturday, the 18th.

4. Later on the 16th - after everyone went home - a dozen or so fish crows took over the site. More on that in a later post............

5. On the morning of the 17th, I could see from my apartment a large pile of dirt on the public sidewalk side of the fence on Ward St, but a building was blocking part of my view, so it was time to head on over there to see what this was about. This is the view when I got there. If you look right above the head of the worker, you can see the end of a long black pipe and there's a shorter pipe just above that one. Those are............

6. ............water pipes - the reason the dirt below the sidewalk had to be dug out and temporarily piled onto the adjacent part of the walkway.

7. Continuing east on Ward, this view shows the wall area where the concrete will be poured tomorrow.

8. Turning onto Main St, I looked back toward the water pipes and saw that worker about to shorten the longer pipe.

9. After walking down Main St to the southeastern corner of the project, I looked back toward the pipes and saw I had a much better angle to shoot from. In this shot, this supremely-muscled man is about halfway through the pipe, while standing on what looks like very shaky debris.

10. He then switched to the other side and finished the job. I was waiting for this moment and took the shot a microsecond after the separation. The pipe has not yet hit the ground.

11. The ground has been hit.

12, 13, 14. As I headed back home, I took some shots of the ol’ water (pipes) hole, some construction materials and a pile of interestingly-colored dirt (I like the contrast).

Saturday, August 18

15. The concrete pumper truck was the first thing I saw from my living room when I got up on Saturday. It’s hard to miss something that looks like it could connect the two end zones at MetLife Stadium.

16, 17. Closeups of the pumped concrete being poured

18, 19.  The higher-than-the-horizon pumper truck obscures the fact that there’s another crane lifting a vat of concrete for workers to pour (I’m sure there’s a more technical term for it, but until I learn it, it’s a vat).

Sunday, August 19

20, 21, 22. A short stroll to watch concrete harden (watching paint drying might be quicker), the vat hanging out with the pipes, and…………….milk curdling?

Monday, August 20,

23. It’s Christmas morning for excited workers as they unwrap the concrete wall (with the help of crowbars and a bucket).

August 21 to September 1, 2018:

1. Things are cranking up, so this seemed like the right image to start with.

2. A waterfall of stones

3. Brand-new, wet cinder blocks

4,5,6. Work

7. Project picture frame

8. Not sure what the big blocks are for

9. Scaffolding going up on the first of two 5-story stairwells

10. The Ward St view - the smaller concrete structure will contain the two elevators.

11. The water's main purpose was to make cement, but on a day that felt like 101 degrees, it appears to serve a more refreshing purpose.

12. Early morning sun backlighting makes for a better picture when smoke is involved.

13. This stairwell was going up quickly and beginning to block my view of Main St.

14. 10 hours later - at around midnight - I noticed it was starting to block the Greater BCA sign.

15. The next morning, an 80-ton crane started hoisting steel beams for the basement

16. The day after that (9/1), the scaffolding was removed from the stairwell's exterior.

17. The 80-ton crane

18. The scaffoldless stairwell. In the background, you can see 3 of the upright steel beams.

19. The collected scaffolding

20. My still-clear view of the river.............how long will it last? And "Greater BCA" is now "Greater B".

That stairwell is 3 stories above grade, so far. And how tall is the building going to be ? At least 5 stories, I'm sure.  Your fears are confirmed, goodbye river view from your penthouse apartment.
Title: Re: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project
Post by: BLeafe on September 08, 2018, 11:01:27 AM
The stairwell is at a second-story level now (plus one floor is in the basement). From my view, it's almost at the same height as the two-story buildings this one replaces. I could never see the Greater BCA sign or the Noches de Colombia restaurant before demolition occurred and now I'm going back to not seeing them - no big deal, but losing the river will be.................good ol' progress.

They're going to build everything up to the second floor before continuing with the stairwell, which will go up to the fifth floor - the finished building's height.

Title: Re: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project - Part 1 of 2 (9-2-18 to 9-7-18)
Post by: BLeafe on September 11, 2018, 03:00:44 PM
9-2-18

1. You saw this stairwell at night WITH scaffolding in an earlier post. This is without.

9-4-18

2,3,4. The cement pumper at work in various locations

5. The only question I can think of asking about this iimage has this answer: to get to the other side.

9-5-18

6. This truck picked up the scaffolding and a bunch of other (excess?) building materials.

7. I wondered what all these wood frames were for. As far as I can tell, two long rows of them were built about a wall's depth from each other and concrete was pumped between them. The concrete hardened and the frames were removed. The result - as you probably guessed from my "wall's depth" remark - was a concrete wall.

9-6-18

8. The next day - with the sun almost directly overhead - I took this shot to show the basement definition created by its new walls.

9-7-18

9-19.  The big crane is back to hoist more steel beams into place (OK - one's not a steel beam and I had a little fun with the next-to-last one). In #12, Superman and Robin (huh?) showed up to watch.

9-7-18 (continued)

20. Finally! Some color to work with! But it's short-lived - it's a liner to keep moisture away from the concrete floor that's scheduled to be poured tomorrow (9/12).

21. The last time you saw this shot, it was all wooden frames that resulted in this curved concrete wall.

22-33. Beamwork. Personal favorite: the Sign-A-Rama one. Distant second: the one that looks like a cross (but only because the crane operator is in the shot).

34,35. End of the day

1. Steel beams, a huge crane, concrete walls, giant blocks...............

2. I see something else. I have to start wondering if it's the last time I'm going to be fortunate enough to see another egret from home.

Two cranes.

(although, it may be an egret).

It IS an egret - in fact, it's a Great Egret.

Cranes are almost never seen around here.

Post by: BLeafe on September 18, 2018, 06:33:06 PM
9-10-18

1. The night view with some steel beams up

9-11-18

2. The site, haze, 80-ton crane, fire trucks across Main St

3. The crane operator appears to have heavy steel beams hanging overhead and weighty concrete blocks underfoot - not a good place to be in a 2-dimensional world.

4. Basement beam-connecting

9-12-18

BASEMENT FLOOR CEMENT-POURING

5. From home: the concrete pumper truck and its ridiculously-long arm is being fed by a constant stream of cement mixer trucks.

6. The pumper's flexible arm is being manipulated to spread concrete on the yellow floor liner, but the most interesting part is the guy in the red shirt, who is controlling the crane via his pouch.

7. This small photostitch shows the Ward St view of the mostly-covered cement floor.

8. The view from Main St

9. Cement closeup

10. It looks like fun, but I hope this guy didn't wait there too long.

11. The last floor section and probably the last cement mixer truck

12. Cement closer-up

13. I like this shot not only because of the super-long handle, but the steel beam vaguely resembles a guitar neck.

14. The crew takes a break.............probably waiiting for the new cement mixer truck to get hooked up to the pumper. They're at the far southern end of the site and I'm on Ward St, at the far northern end.

15. The site engineer on a very precarious-looking perch

16. This looks like a fun ride at an amusement park (The Flying Fan?), but it's actually a motorized troweling machine - used to finish off concrete slabs.

9-14-18

1. All the heavy concrete blocks got moved to another location on the site.

2. Time to go to another job somewhere

3. Hackensack meets Fort Lee (with Teaneck in the middle)

9-15-18

4. More vertical beams are in place, but my river view remains intact for a little while longer. By the way, I'm told that steel will only go up to the second floor and above that will be all wood.

5. Sun/Beams

9-16-18

6. The night view with some more steel beams up

7. The morning sun shows basement beam work.

SUNDAY MORNING PERIMETER SHOOT

8+9. As I understand it, on this level, the Main St side is residential and the State St side is garage. The bottom of #9 - a photostitch - has me a little worried. Sometimes, a stitch can cause bending on the edges. I'm hoping that's the case here.

10+11. Remember this? Since there's now some verticality, it's time to start taking similar shots as the structure rises.

12. Since the next image blocks the beautiful white steeple of the First Presbyterian Church, I wanted to include this shot so that my friend, Steve McClelland - the pastor - knows that there's still a nice view of his steeple from Main St.............at least for a little while.

13. This photostitch shows the current morning view of the entire Main St side of the project, as seen from E. Ward St.

14. This stitch shows such a great view of my neighborhood. It's s shame that it won't be visible from this Main St vantage point anymore (of course, it wasn't visible until about 8 months ago, so that's one reason I'm shooting what I can while it's still there).

15. For all you Sears freaks................

16+17. Site sights

18. This is where those heavy blocks were moved to. BTW - "CBH Care" (Comprehensive Behavioral Health Care) was the largest group affected by the change. They occupied most of the largest demolished building - the yellow-brick one that wrapped around Main, Ward, and State streets. The frames behind the blocks pop up in the next picture.

19. How nice of the construction company to leave these frames here for me to shoot through. There's usually something different left behind the frames every week for me to shoot.

Click to enlarge images. Clicking the photostitches usually enlarges them to a point where you will have to scroll from left to right to view the whole picture.

And, of course, all images and text in Parts 1 and 2 (and everywhere else) are ©Bob Leafe.

9-18-18

1. At the site: on the right is Max Dorne, Director of Development for Claremont Companies (site clearers/buiders) with bankers.

2. The 80-ton crane heads down State St.

9-20-18

3,4. We've seen these guys before - taking pictures of each other and spray-painting graffiti on the sidewalk.............cool jobs!

5. Trucks line up to dump dirt. Red is backing down to dump and blue is waiting for him to finish and leave so he can do the same.

6. 300 loads were needed to raise the floor 11 feet. The video shows a few of them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqAHsHuhJ8U

9-22-18

7. Saturday morning. No one was around and then I saw this guy climbing a wall, tiptoe-ing through the tulips and then just hanging out. Turns out he was talking to another worker who was behind a wall.

9-24-18

8. Flattening out the dirt

9. Workers peel paper from the sticky side of anti-moisture wall liner - kinda like wallpaper.

10. Sub-standard fill that was too sandy for good compaction with the roller gets scraped up to be sent back.

11,12. Eight truckloads of that fill were returned.

9-25-18

13,14,15. The rain just got worse as the day went on.

9-26-18

16. Still too wet to get any work done

9-27-18

17,18,19. Twice a year - from my view - the sun strongly reflects off the river. Sometimes it's blindingly bright, but mostly it's a gorgeous sea of a zillion shimmering sparkles. It's so bright that you really have to limit the exposure, so the rest of the picture is dark. It occurs next in April, but I'm told my river view will disappear probably in December or January, so, unfortunately, this is it after 30 years. And after looking at the real thing, the pictures are comparatively dull.

Title: Re: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project (lit by lightning?)
Post by: BLeafe on October 05, 2018, 11:23:03 AM
Since I've photographed the 389 Main site in sunlight, darkness, rain and snow, I decided that I wanted to get a shot of it illuminated by lightning. Sunday night's rain/lightning storm gave me that opportunity.

Since it's not easy to guess when lightning's about to go off and shoot stills, I took the simple way out and just shot video of the dark site. After a few flashes - one of which I thought would make a killer shot - I pulled stills from the video. When I found the "good" one, I also pulled a dark still from one-tenth of a second before the lightning for the "before" shot.

Here are the results:

1. The before shot

2. The "sort-of-what-I-was-hoping-to-get" shot

3. What I actually got

Not exactly blinding, but it's my first attempt.

I'll learn.

10-1-18

Half a block of State St is closed because of water company digging - NOT because of the construction vehicles.

10-2-18

1. Lotsa dirt loads

2,3. Despite their alabaster covering, the Michelin Twins now work on a dirt truck.

4. The dumping

5. The piles

6. The flattening

10-5-18

1. Shouldn't the guy have the hat?

10-7-18

1. Traffic light colors!

2. The State and Ward crosswalk to the site

3. It's been a long time since this area was flat.

10-9-18

1,2. Pipes & Pix

10-10-18

1. More heavy equipment waiting to be unloaded

2,4. Maybe a little too heavy - as this vehicle was backing onto the site from the street, I heard a popping/cracking sound. A few seconds later...............damaged driveway.

Various and sundry………….

The only one worth mentioning is IMG_4216 from 10-15. All I know is that these are a new version of light gauge metal forms - instead of wood - for the footings. They get buried in those grave-like holes.

BTW - the last one contained the boulder that’s already on the ground. I missed stopping it in mid-air (bad day).

Ever give any thought to renaming this development  the “389 Main Street project “ rather than the “389 Main Street rehab project” since the word “rehab “ certainly does not apply to this new construction project .
Just a thought  in terms of accuracy.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because all of these projects are in the rehabilitation zone declared by the city in 2011 (see http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php/topic,2008.0.html).

Perhaps the Editor can flesh that out.

Title: Re: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project

12-11-18 (1-9)

This was fun, sitting in my living room and taking pictures of huge steel beams flying over the 389 Main St project - sometimes 3 at a time - courtesy of the massive 110-ton crane and then seeing the workers become beam-walkers. The fifth shot looks like a DWI test.

12-12-18 (10-20)

But what I really wanted to shoot was the flying beams from on-site and on the sun side, so I did that on this day right after shooting brick walls being knocked down just up the street at the Holman's/435 Main Site. It was like when I used to shoot heavy metal shows 30 years ago - lots of  noise, lots of "danger".

Every once in a while, I like to try to see if I still have my concert timing. I noticed (next-to-last shot) that the worker was catching something small thrown from below multiple times. In the last shot, I zoomed in and you can see exactly what it was.

Timing intact!

It's been pretty slow lately, what with the holidays, the weather and who knows what else, so the scene hasn't changed a whole lot. I had expected to lose my river view by now, so I'm thankful for the extra time and river photo ops.

This week seems to be dedicated to installing most of the corrugated metal floor decking, which had been started earlier on the Main St side of the first floor. After that, concrete will be poured into the decking to make the floors. The next post will have more decking installation images.

There are two photo stitches at the end from 2-3-19. One of them matches up well with one I took near the beginning of this thread before any buildings came down.

It's been over a month, so I have to split this into two posts.

2-6-19 (3)

These are all from February 6 - busy day. I put 3 photo stitches done that day together in the first image to illustrate how much of the corrugated metal floor decking was completed on that day. The next two images - also taken the same day - show how much work went into each section (and gave me a chance to capture the spark show).

This is a stitch taken from across Main St. After clicking, scroll to the right to see the whole thing.

The second shot is a video still. A blob of sparks rained down from above, hit concrete and practically bounced into some poor guy's face.

2-26-19 (3)

A wood delivery, a concrete block delivery and those blocks being put to immediate use.

This is the first time I noticed night lighting on the site.

3-4-19 (2)

Oh, goodie..............more snow

3-9-19 (1)

It wasn't that dark out - I just had to stop down the lens because that one section was just too brightly-reflective. It's kind of interesting-looking this way.

3-11-19 (2) - In the parking garage (State St side) and trying to control a LOT of pages on the second floor on a windy day

3-13-19 (3) - Ward St side, first floor corrugated metal flooring in place, recently-installed sidewalk covering on Main St

3-15-19 (2) - New load of corrugated metal flooring for the third floor, putting that metal decking in place (Chicken Collision store in the background)

3-16-19 (2) - Sparkly river at low tide, the black market pastel snow shovel exchange

3-17-19 (5) - Third floor metal flooring almost done (second floor concrete soon), garage solitary confinement room (don't tell anyone), underside of third floor metal flooring, the metal corner of Main & Ward, yarn from after-work knitting class (REALLY don't tell anyone - the guys'll kill me!)

Title: Re: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project - the first floor floor-pour
Post by: BLeafe on March 25, 2019, 04:45:39 PM
Last Tuesday, March 19, 2019, they poured the concrete to create the first floor floor. I got a good tip to be there early AM.

The pictures are pretty much self-explanatory, except for the first 4 images.

The first one is a photo stitch taken from the roof behind the State Farm office, showing everything that was going on, including one of the many cement trucks needed for the entire floor, the big cement-pumper crane (center) and its hanging tube on the right over the newly-poured floor.

It turns out that this will probably be the last time for me on that roof because - as of today - they've already got the southern cement block wall up to the third floor, which also means no more shooting from the State Farm bathroom (thank you, Bob Testa - it was a big help).

I wasn't sure what was being made in the second and third shots, so I checked in with the site superintendent. His reply:

"It’s a footing for the extension of the existing wall inside basement area. A steel tube column will sit on top of that footing & be bolted down to carry a steel beam overhead. The beam overhead will connect to the piece of existing steel that’s there and the other end will be connected to the new steel tube column that will get installed."

Got that?

The fourth photo represents good photographic timing for me, but not for the poor guy who got pulled into the cement truck. I hope they put a plaque somewhere on the first floor to let people know who they're walking on and to do so respectfully.

(Just kidding, kids)

I also made a fun cement video that I'll post soon.

As usual, I'm way behind on this. They seem to be ramping up the action, so I have a lot more photos to edit. Look for a few more posts in the upcoming days as I try to catch up.

3-23-19

1-3. A load on concrete blocks is delivered to the south wall and the workers pass and catch each one down the line. State Farm loses its north-facing windows and I lose my access to an interesting shooting angle. It was much appreciated while it lasted.

4. The second floor won't be flat for much longer.

3-24-19

5-11. From my apartment, on site and around the block (10 and11 are stitches - click to enlarge)

3-25-19

12-14. South wall almost done and a delivery from State St

3-26-19

15-18. Early morning sunlight, pouring cement into the blocks, worker throws a concrete block (circled and still in the air, creating Thud-a-Rama at Sign-a-Rama), south wall is finished.

These are pretty self-explanatory.

I don't often get the chance to go on-site and shoot video, but there was no crew working on this particular Saturday - only one site boss, who graciously let me roam around as long as I didn't climb any ladders or start the crane up. Thank you, sir!

Title: Re: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project (4-1+2-19 PREP/2ND FLOOR POUR-1 of 2)
Post by: BLeafe on April 09, 2019, 05:46:15 PM
There are 40 photos - 20 here and 20 in the next post.

4-1-19  6 pix

The first two pictures are sort of explained in this exchange with the site superintendent:

BL: Any idea what this guy was doing at about 9:30 this morning? My guess is measuring or marking something, but what?

SS: Yes, the bench mark for our height of finished floor is on that telephone pole. And we had a laser spinning up on the second floor. So on that pole he had a target that reads the spinning laser. When he gets close or on the mark, that laser target beeps loud and tells you how far you are to finish floor on the second floor. Make sense? You put the heights of floors on that pole and hold bottom of pole on your bench mark on the ground floor, then you work your way up each floor.

BL: It makes sense...........as long as the pole never moves (this neighborhood is full of tilting telephone poles that used to be straight).

Since tomorrow is The Big Pour of the Second Floor, the corrugated decking has to first be covered with sheets of wire mesh to strengthen the concrete.............skinny-mini rebar, if you will. It was interesting trying to get photos of it because, from a block away, one or two carried mesh sheets were practically invisible unless you caught the sun hitting it just right for a split second.

The fifth picture is a photostitch, showing the whole floor covered with the stuff.

4-2-19  14 pix (20 more in next post)

I'm getting used to the drill by now: giant cement-pumping crane shows up early and goes through its unfolding sequence (first 8 pix), while a continuously-scheduled stream of cement trucks vie for parking spaces.

On this day, the pour started in the southwest corner of the building and worked its way around the second floor in a sort-of clockwise fashion. At the same time, another crane was hoisting steel beams over to the Main St edge for other work.

I tried to get a shot of every part of this floor being poured, though some may look like the same place. In the next-to-last shot, the guy driving the red Zamboni-like machine appears to have run into a concrete wall and just discovered that he has no reverse gear. The last shot shows the poured floor.

As usual, click to enlarge.

The Video

So while I was taking about 200 photos, I also shot 66 (I think) little QuickTime videos with another (tripoded) camera. After editing out some and editing down the others, I had about 5GB of videos left. But the good thing about QuickTime is that combining all the videos reduces the file size by about 2/3. This one is now 1.7GB. So now I always try to take two 30-second videos instead of a one 1-minute vid. The space savings are tremendous.

Unfortunately, I don't think this video is equally tremendous. It's too long. It takes the cement-pumping crane a couple of minutes just to unfold. You can look at the pictures of the same thing in a few seconds.

You know the difference between optical zoom and digital zoom? Once you zoom as much as possible optically, there's like another gear (digital zoom) that lets you get a lot closer. The problem is that it's not as sharp. You can see everything closer, which is good, but the quality loss is disturbing to me.

So - like the pictures - the video is pretty complete, but it feels like it could be edited better.

You decide.

Post by: BLeafe on April 12, 2019, 04:18:30 PM
4-3-19

1. That tower begins in the garage where I saw something that looked like an old fence until I saw it drive out of the site. This shows both images.

2-8. The visible part of that tower begins to take shape as lots of concrete blocks are brought in, as upward scaffolding is built.

4-4-19

9-15. As the tower rises, another crane is delivering steel beams to the Main St side. At one point, plane buzzes crane (maybe)............twice.

4-6-19

1-7. The State St-side stairwell tower is finished and the scaffolding is torn down on Saturday.

8-10. Time for a quick walk-around:
- two views with one showing door openings for floors 3,4 and 5
- collected scaffolding waiting to get back into action in two days
- collected steel mesh waiting for the next cement floor pour
- STITCH  (with GLITCH) looking north (and the last time I get to sneak my building into the shot)

They are really moving fast now. You may see a few of these posts this week as I try to catch up.

4-15-19 (4)

(1-4) Now that the elevator shaft is finished, you can see the scaffolding being taken down gradually.

4-16-19 (7)

(5,6) The first thing I saw today (7:48am) at 389 was smoke - a fire? After I emailed the site super, he sent me the sixth pic the next day, explaining that it was what happens when this 40 year-old welding machine on a flatbed truck gets started up in the morning.

(7,8) Workers peeking into future tenants' rooms.

(9,10) Breaking up a concrete block and cementing it into place.

(11) I'm enjoying the river sparkles while I can. As I write this less than a month later, I can only see a sliver of them on the far side and that'll probably be gone within the week.

4-17-19 (4)

(12-15) Four shots, including one taken from Teaneck - probably the last shot of my building from there. The whole thing will be obliterated once the fifth floor is built. That will make the building at least as tall as its concrete structures.

4-18-19 (5)

(16-20) A lot of spacer work going on between the second and third floor and by the time I shot the stitch (last image), the flat third floor flooring was started on the far right.

4-19-19 (1)

(1) Spacers in the sun

4-22-19 (1)

(2)  This post is non-stop wood.

4-23-19 (2)

(3) The ancient welding machine coughs back to life.

(4) Exterior spacer cover between the second and third floors

4-25-19 (1)

(5) Reading plans and hauling wood

4-27-19 (2)

(6) A new delivery of wood flooring

(7) By the end of the day, most of the third floor flooring is in.

4-29-19 (10)

(8.) Read the plans, make a mark.

(9,10) Lug a piece, kick it over

(11) Stairwell plunger keeps it clean (and if you believe THAT...............)

(12-16) Flying wood (look how much is piled on the third floor)

(17) By the end of the day, the third floor walls have started to go up.

4-30-19 (2)

(18) Multiple wood trucks

(19) Reading in the wood

Title: Re: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project (5-2 to part of 5-4-19)
Post by: BLeafe on May 13, 2019, 01:45:11 PM
I'm gonna have to split up days and continue them in the following post because there's just too much to shoot and I have to stay within a 20-images-per-post limit.

5-2-19 (4)

(1-4) Wood City

5-3-19 (9)

(5-13) Check out the sixth picture. What are the chances that I would capture a certain numbered/lettered mid-air delivery, happen to have that wood utilized facing me a couple of hours later and make the connection between the two from nearly a block away and 4 floors higher? (as he hurts his arm from patting himself on the back)

5-4-19 (7)

(14-20) Three stitches from 5-4 will begin the next post.

Title: Re: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project (part of 5-4 to 5-7-19)
Post by: BLeafe on May 13, 2019, 02:35:16 PM
5-4-19 (continued) (3)

(1-3) As noted in the previous post, the first three images are photo stitches from 5/4's walkaround. They face south, southwest and north, respectively.

5-6-19 (3)

(4-6) I'm tempted to call the guy in the sixth pic "Robin Troweler", but if you're not a 70s music freak...................

5-7-19 (13)

(7-19) I woke up to the view of a familiar piece of equipment that might not be seen again on this project: the very long-armed cement crane. I couldn't see where it was being used on the second floor until they got to the corner of Main and Ward. The last picture is a night shot after rain fell. The next post will begin with an observation having to do with that rainfall.

Title: Re: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project (5-8 to 5-9-19)
Post by: BLeafe on May 13, 2019, 03:33:35 PM
5-8-19 (9)

(1-9)  After last night's rain, I noticed a big puddle in the middle of the new (and supposedly-flat) concrete-floor. I asked the site super about it and here's his reply: "The floors here get a coating on top of them, anywhere from 1/2'" TO 1". It varies. Its called a leveling course. Once all framing is installed, they get a self-leveling solution poured onto all floors."

Fifth pic: so it's not only the river that'll be gone from my view, as evidenced here by my new view of the "IAN ASSOCIATION" building (as the fourth-floor walls start to go up). Actually, I've already lost the view of Main St (and River St) that I gained last year. The ninth pic's scaffolding and wood planks show that the fourth floor will wipe out most of the river for me.

5-9-19 (11)

(10-20) After a shot from home, I got a Nixle notice that said one lane of Main St was closed from Passaic to Ward, so that told me that something might be going on on the Main St side of the building. It turned out to be nothing relevant, so after a couple of flying wood street shots, I went back home to find that they had just put up the picture window frame for the unit of some future tenant who will have my three-floors-lower river view. For the rest of the day, fourth-floor wall construction continued (and was completed, as the last compilation image shows).

Title: Re: Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project (5-10 to 5-13-19)
Post by: BLeafe on May 13, 2019, 08:15:06 PM
5-10-19 to 5-13-19 (19)

(1-19) In the second shot, the hard hat looks to be precariously-balanced on the guy's head. If you look at the images where the tallest blue scaffolding is behind the concrete elevator shafts on the left, THAT is the approximate height of the finished 5-story building, so I'm not only losing the river view, but half of Teaneck as well. Slightly on the plus side, a couple of the poorly-aimed local security lights no longer show up in my living room and will now delight the new 389 Main tenants.

In the fifteenth picture, you can still see some river and the last few river sparkles that I will ever see from here.

In the last four pictures - taken today - concrete construction continues on something on the Main St side. (5/14 - I just got word from the site super what that is: "Those are the metal pan steel stairs. They get bolted and welded to concrete walls, then stairs and landings get poured with concrete.")

And then the rains came.

And for one glorious day, I'm all caught up.

5-23-19 (11) + one from 5/24

This is the day my view was officially stolen, once they put up a window frame on the river (and it was pouring rain in the next two shots - serves them right!). I know I've griped about it enough, but the truth is that when I asked the site boss last year when I would lose my river view, he told me it would happen in December, so I've actually had 5 more months than I expected. Still................

In the below video, I shot that window frame/wall piece that was being installed and, in the end, the weather gods voiced their opinion on my behalf. Thanks, WGs.

The site was closed on Memorial Day weekend, so I was surprised to see two guys who pulled up in a project-associated vehicle suddenly appear on the wrong side of a locked gate (first pic). It turns out that they had gained entrance through a..............let's just say "a weak spot in the fence" (second pic).

Click! Click!.............and sent to the boss, who, um, took care of things.

5-26-19

Walkaround

5-27-19

My apartment is 7 floors up. These two pictures were taken from my apartment's roof - 8 floors up - where I can still see a little bit of river...............but that won't last for long.

5-28-19

Don't know what this piping (?) is for, but it's an image I haven't seen here before.

5-29-19

Three more floors were illuminated at night, it had just finished raining, the sky was clearing and you could see the high-rises in Cliffside Park (horizon, center) and the The Modern 1 and 2 in Fort Lee on the left horizon.

5-30-19

Another load of wood arrives because they've still got to build three more floors on the Main St side. After that wood was stacked, I went for a walk and took one of my favorite shots from this project: the stacked wood leading to what it will become - stacked floors.

5-31-19

Not sure what the red stuff is..........cables? piping? Twizzlers? Whatever.................it's a new visual. I wonder what dance the guy's doing in the second pic - odds are it isn't the Safety Dance. In the third pic, I found that there's still the slightest bit of river view left from my living room.

6-1-19

Took a walk to see if anything had been built yet on the Main St side. I had seen a that a crane had been doing something from my apartment, but it had only brought up third floor components, so I drove over to Teaneck to see what the project looked like from Terhune Park. You can just barely see some of my building with its two chimneys.

In the sixth shot, it looks like the building height might not be enough to block those blinding (at night) Foschini field lights.

6-14-19

It's interesting to watch someone using the controls in the bucket to drive the street vehicle section.

6-15-19

The bucket dodges the 165 bus, a festive balloon rises on River St, cutting up on the roof, uploading wood to the bucket, sticking his head out on the 3rd-floor corner, climbing from the roof into the bucket (stitch), putting that uploaded wood to good use.

The five floors are finished on the State St side, but Main St has three more floors to go.

6-17-19

I started taking pictures of people framed by red window tape. This is two shots of what I think this is the same guy.

6-21-19

1. The first windows on the State St side

2. While glass is what's happening on State, wood still rules on Main. ARBEC makes OSB (oriented strand board) panels. OSB and plywood are competitors.

3. View from the Passaic St side

4. The back ends of some trucks make interesting pictures.

5. The super-tall crane is done for the day and is shrinking down to size. A minute later, it was not visible.

1. I took this from the NE corner of Main and Anderson (by Sears). It's kind of nice-looking..........

2. This is 2 stories of retail space at the corner of Main and Ward. Maybe I should lease it and sell my "before" pictures to the tenants.  ;-)

3. I saw this looking up on the Ward St side. Other than that, I have no comment.

4-8. Fun with color and composition as I walked around the corner from Ward to State. #8 shows what's going on where from the inside: wood in the front and glass in back.

9. The bucket rests its head on a wooden pillow.

6-24-19

This morning, a truck with video-screen sides and speakers all around parked across State St from the 389 Main project (it parked on the sidewalk) and started broadcasting something about tax fraud and union carpenters a bit loudly. I have no idea who their target audience was until I emailed the site boss:

"That van with large TV screens, blaring loud noise, was the Union Carpenters organizers, try to recruit carpenters to join the Union. I told them that if their film wasn't in Spanish, no one on this job will understand what it is saying."

Someone in a car apparently didn't like the noise, so they added to it by beeping their horn throughout.

THE PIX:

1. Lady complains about what's going on in the above video.

2. It's rare that I can get a hammer stopped in mid-swing from a block away.

6-25-19

3. Three loads of wood

6-26-19

4. Third floor at Main & Ward

5. This is my last stitch of the yard before a new office trailer moves in.

6. Stitch of Wood City

6-27-19

7. I'm not sure, but I think these rolls are what's on the south side of the building in the 7-2-19 shots.

8. The only benefit I expected from this view-blocking building was the fact that the blazing Foschini Park field lights would no longer be visible. I'm told that the building is now as high up as it's gonna get. It's just barely failed to provide that benefit............damn!

6-29-19

9, 10. Rain & Reflections

6-30-19

11. The view of the building from the northernmost part of my roof

7-1-19

12. Did someone on the roof notice me from a block away and smile for the camera?

7-2-19

13, 14. From home, I couldn't tell what these poles were there for, so I took a walk and saw that they appear to be the tracks for moveable scaffolding

15,16. The old office trailer was right by the State St entrance to the site. This new one is tucked way in the back, right against the fence where I normally shoot the yard stitches. The stitch shows the problem (and also the problem that this is a crummy stitch).

17. 18. On the Main St side, four floors down and one to go. I heard hammering when I took that shot, so if you look at it closely, you can see the guy in the next shot, hitting the nail on the head.

The guy on the roof should have his hard hat on............wood pieces are falling out of the bottom. And note that the biggest falling piece is under the dark "Play" button in the center.

The Pix:

1-9. Getting all the roofing materials up on the roof before the July 4 holiday kicks in. Is the guy on the left in the ninth picture taking a selfie?

7-4-19

"Even on the 4th of July, Bob?" Sure!

10-13. The roof at sunset with all that stuff on it made interesting stitches, but a couple of hours later, the Hackensack fireworks were magnificent. The east-facing tenants in this building will love them.

7-6-19

14-19. Except for the first one, they're all roof rain work shots, taken while I'm nice and dry in my living room.

wow, that construction really did destroy your view of the river.  That's a major loss for your photography sessions, and overall quality of life.  Well, at least THEY will have a stupendous view of the river, until the next one goes up on the other side of Main Street....lol

7-15-19 (3)

1-3. This is the week where the side of the project that faces me turns bright red.

The red material is called Resisto Redzone Stick VP and it's a self-adhesive, vapor-permeable, air-barrier membrane with a tri-laminated polypropylene complex on its surface..............or so says the Resisto site.

You can get out your redometer and watch the color increase as the week goes on.

7-16-19 [8]

4. This shows the first straight-on view of the top-floor work on the Main St side.

5,6. Window work continues.

7-11. Red-spread continues. #11 is a photo stitch of the roof edge.

7-17-19 (1)

12. This is what the red looks like in the AM without the sun being directly on it. There's also a lot of window reflection and window stickers, plus a crane at the bottom that's waiting to be unloaded.

7-19-19 (1)

13. Sunset

7-22-19 (1)

14. Early morning sun lights up the Ward St side.

7-23-19 (2 + video)

15. Very-slightly reminiscent of "Home Improvement" (which one's Wilson?)

16. Looks like someone from another planet moved into a 4th floor unit.

That someone is chameleon-like, according to this video. Assuming this is really a reflection, I have no idea from where, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's coming from some new display at the liquor store that's next to the car wash at River and Anderson.

7-25-19 (4)

1. The five floors

2. The northeast corner at Main and Ward

3. I was surprised to see that the State St Cafe section of sidewalk is mostly still there.............but it's not staying.

4. Looking north toward Ward St, this stitch shows the temporary Window Warehouse.

7-27-19 (1)

5. A balloon on River St appears to be separating the work being done on the roof of 7 E. Ward (east side of Main St) from the new construction at 389 Main (west side of Main).

7-29-19 (3)

6. Street view of the Ward St work

7. Closeup double-view from home of a window installation

8. Here's a sight you don't see every day on one-way State St: a collapsed crane driving a front-loaded cargo of new windows against traffic.

7-30-19 (1)

9. This is a short-lived phenomenon: all the cars in the E lot have red roofs and trunks, thanks to the current covering of the State St side of 389 Main.

7-31-19
(5)

10. Street view of worker unrolling his to-do list for the day

11. This might be the last time a giant crane is on-site to bring materials onto the roof.

12. The picture frame shots are becoming fewer and fewer as work progresses.

13,14. The red spreads to Ward St.

8-1-19 (3)

15. I can't see as many workers on the roof these days because the activity is all on the far (Main St) side.

16. There's a two-story-tall piece of what I think may be clear backing for the Resisto Redzone Stick VP material that's blowing in the breeze.

17. It appears that some sort of rope connected to the scaffolding is being secured to one of its poles at the end of the day down on the second floor.

8-2-19

1. The red starts creeping around onto the Ward St side.

2,3,4. Some pipe stuff I happened to notice on a walkaround.

5. Young and old workers: time to stretch

8-3-19

6. It's hard to catch two shovelsful of dirt in the air from a block away, 7 floors up and with a million wires in the way. I came close.

7. Yes - there's a street between the old brick building and the new one.

8. Yet another red-roofed car, courtesy of 389 Main.

8-4-19

9-14. Except for the last one, all were found on another walkaround.

8-5-19

15. When asked about this shot, the site superintendent said that this is the new construction drone.

8-7-19

16-20. More walkarounds are necessary because not much is going on on the State St side. As for all the pipes shots, here's what the site super had to say: "All those pipes will have the permanent power to the building. The power will come off that pole on State St., travel underground in pipes into site and make a right turn to a transformer in the back right hand corner. Then from transformer underground into the building basement under the electrical room. Then holes are cored out of concrete floor so the wires can be brought up thru floor into the electrical room above."

1. At  sunset, the building seems to make EVERYTHING red - even the clouds!

8-11-19

2. Almost the same shot as the one at the end of the previous post, but in this one, the tubes have caps (big deal, right?)

3. No comment other than "Really?".

4. The building is looking pretty formidable now.

5. The full shape of the Main St side is almost complete.

8-14-19

6. Roof work and almost-roof work.

7. That's some crane!

8. One little box

8-15-19

9. Three little boxes

10. Four little boxes

11. Four-and-a-half little boxes (four with sides)

12. Five-and-a-half little boxes (four with a roof)

13. Five-and-a-half little boxes (ALL with a roof)

14. Drinking and driving (the wrong way) on State St in a five-window convertible.

8-16-19

15. There's something upcoming called a Fraco mast climbing scaffold that these will be a part of.

16,17. This man is on the roof, right on the corner of Main and Ward - inches from death - and decides to swing a sledgehammer with his rear end hanging over Main St.

18. These guys are working one floor below a very interesting-looking window that I will show a bit further down the line.

1. Up on the roof

2. Spreadin' the red (with the help of a third pair of hands up top)

3. The view from Passaic St

4. More red on Ward

5. I think this is backing for the rolls of red.

8-19-19

6. Early this Monday morning, I got an email from the site super asking me if I happened to see or get any shots of unauthorized people on the site: "Our site got robbed and all the trades tools were taken from their lock gang boxes." Unfortunately, I didn't see anything. Even more unfortunately, it happened again two days later.

7,8,9,10. Construction of the Fraco mast-climbing scaffold begins.

11. This is the interesting-looking window I referred to in the previous post and also in the July 26 post. And I was right about it being a reflection from a liquor store on River St. Buy-Rite Liquors has a big red sign with yellow letters and I'm pretty sure that's what you see in that left window.

8-20-19

12,13,14,15. Another walkaround with cranes and creeping red. The truck in #14 is carrying rolls of white rubber roofing material - one of which you will see in an 8-23 video being carried in the rain on the roof.

16,17. Roof deposit and roof lunch

18. Nailing traffic cones to the street

19,20. More prep work for the Fraco mast-climbing scaffold

6. A framed shot of a worker watching the mast work below

7. The red you see inside the widow is from a section of the project across the courtyard from this apartment.

8. As unhappy as I was about this building blocking my view, I wish they built it just a teeny bit taller to keep the blazing Foschini Park field lights out of my living room.

8-23-19

9. "June 10"? Maybe next year.

10. Life goes on on both sides of State St

11. Another part of a mast is put together.

12. Street side view of the Fraco mast-climbing scaffold. The entire platform moved to the top of the building by climbing the 3 masts (2 of which appear to be together from this angle).

13. Red has hit the Main St side and the Main & Ward topper is in place.

14. So here's the completed Fraco mast-climbing scaffold after the huge building-wide platform traveled up the 3 masts - each with its own motor - to the top floor. So what does it do? Sez the boss: "Guys are going to start brick work. They can put like 25 guys laying brick and move right up the building with that scaffold. They start bottom up." In reply to another question: "No idea what that monster weighs. Has to be a couple of tons."

8-24-19

15. Essentially the same as the previous shot, this was taken the next day when the sun was an an angle that caused the platform to cast a shadow across the entire 4th floor.

16,17. Carrying materials on the roof. #17 looks like the guys are headed for the Modern 1 and 2 towers in Fort Lee...............or maybe just to the houses in Teaneck.

18. Does that say "Genie" or "Ganja" on the side? Looks like a big bong.

19. This stitch shows most of the scaffold's platform, what's on the roof, the Modern 1 & 2 in Fort Lee and some of the high-rises in Cliffside Park.

8-26-19

20. I thought the mast's motor fell out, but I'm told it's a small masonry wet saw for cutting brick.

I heard a lot of metallic moaning and groaning on August 26, 2019, and realized that it was coming from the 389 Main project - specifically, the building-wide, 5-story Fraco mast-climbing scaffold on the State St side of the project. It had been making its way down from the 5th floor with snail-like speed and I thought I should get video of this unusual sight. If I edit out all the time it stopped, it might be a speedy little vid that someone might actually want to watch.

I thought wrong.

By the time I finally got the camera and tripod set up and hit "REC", it was already down to the 4th floor. Did I miss my chance for YouTube glory?

Even after squeezing out as much dead air as I could, it still runs almost 10 minutes, so if you've got something else to do..............ANYTHING!..............do it.

The roof is at a 6th-floor level and I shot this from my 7th-floor apartment a block away. This was the day that they finally appeared to have completed the roof construction work at the 389 Main St project and cleared it. The video demonstrates a small part of it.

1. I'm guessing that the V that was half-created by the pole stands for "VERY unsafe"? The picture brings to mind an original Met: Ed Crane-pole.........oops, Kranepool.

2. The delivery guy gets his ducts in a row (groan) while the work crew brings in the carriers of heat and A/C.

3. Reconnecting the fence after the delivery

4. The Fraco thing is positioned to facilitate the 3rd-floor brickwork.

9-15-19

5. The view from the NE corner of Main and Anderson

6. I have no idea what this cylindrical concrete thing is or who created the red, yellow and black palette with the strategically-placed brick, but it was the first unintentionally-artistic piece I've seen on the site.

This just in from the site boss: "That big round piece of concrete slab that brick was on, is a core hole drilled out underground from the foundation wall where the water main line for the building comes in from the street water main."

9-21-19

1. The view from across the river in Terhune Park in Teaneck (gotta go back at high tide).

2,3. The cylindrical concrete palette looks less artistic without the brick (and the yellow pat of butter that was in the center). I couldn't lift the cylinder, but I got the brick for a memento (its markings match the previous pic of it).

4. I'll probably shoot most the vehicles I see that have the red building reflection on them for as long as that situation exists.

5. Fall sunsets begin in Fort Lee and Hackensack (and nowhere else!).

7. Didn't have to wait long

9-25-19

10. Putting together the scaffolding on the Ward St side

9-26-19

11. After a light rain, the red building is reflecting off the two roofs of the small building across the street.

12. I was hoping for a rainbow over the building after the storm, but its timing wasn't right.

13. I DID notice that the roof hatch was open, but at this stage of construction, a little rain getting in isn't a concern.

14. The dark exiting storm and the bright sunset made it a good time to shoot a living-room neighborhood photostitch view. Who knows how many more opportunities there will be to do this while the building is still red. PLUS, you can see a project going up in front of Sears on the left that will block most of Sears from my view, so this may turn out to be a doubly-rare shot.

AM:

1,2. Netting deliveries, unentangling and unfurling

PM:

3. Windy afternoon

4. What started out as a sideways "U", became...

5. ... an (almost) sideways "I", blowing in front of the newly-netted Ward St scaffolding. This necessitated...

6,7,8. ...a one-block road trip to capture this one-day sight from different angles.

9-30-19

9,10. From over a block away, I'm guessing that bricks were being picked out on the building's SW corner and cut to fit specific needs.

11. Meanwhile, over in the NW corner, bricks are handed up one at a time. I had to take a few shots to get this right because you can't see detail this tiny in the viewfinder of a pocket camera.

12. A tub of mortar is being mixed and a shovelful is taken out.

13. I noticed something strange going on up on the roof. It appeared that sticks or branches were being inserted into the roof. What on earth could THAT be? Some kind of garden?

10-1-19

14. Oh, I know! He's going to cover them with animal skins and make teepees to cover the builder's low-income housing obligations. What else could it be?

15. The 4th-floor workers await delivery of something that's still on the first floor.

16,17. Playing "King of the Mountain" on his truck until some oncoming metal scaffolding chases him away.

18. Calling "Thank you" down to the crane operator for yet another tub of delicious mortar.

10-2-19

19. The tables are turned (slightly) as MY building reflects the sun off THEIR windows. It's nowhere near as dominant as their red is at sunset, but - unlike that red - it WILL be permanent for their tenants. Revenge is ours!

20. So it's not gonna be a garden, nor will it be teepees for low-income tenants, so WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Oh, wait.......a Western Union telegram (Google it) just came in from the site boss: "Those are the water lines and refrigerant lines that will go into rooftop units for the units in the building. There will be big units that fit over those pipes on the roof where air conditioning & heat comes from to feed the units below."

How boring. I was looking forward to shooting the teepee tenants and related activities on that roof for years to come. Oh well - maybe the big units will block out the blazing Foschini Park field lights.

Stay tuned.....and...

Look for reflective window art and reflective car art (10-19 & 10-24), "overheated generator" (according to the HFD on 10-26) and delivery of 25-30 apartment climate units to the roof (10-30-19).

(I should mention periodically that this really the 395 Main project - not 389 Main)

11-5-19

1-3. Unboxing the A/Cs

4. Stitch of the roof (and The Modern 1 & 2) at sunset

11-6-19

5. Corner of Main and Ward

11-7-19

6. Dunno what all this stuff is for, but it looks serious.

11-8-19

7. Back-seat driver (in the bucket) going up State St.

11-9-19

8. Overview (I've been doing these since Day 1 - might make an interesting flip book at the end).

11-12-19

9. Heavy lifting on a closed State St

11-15-19

10,11. Window deliveries from the street

12. Roof activity

13-15. Roof deliveries

16. Main and crane view

17. Back to two-tone on the Passaic St side. That tan color will soon be on State St. Notice the scaffolding and the five scaffolding support poles on the right.

18. On the roof working on a scaffolding support pole

19. Lots of truck/crane deliveries on State St

11-20-19

20. The Modern I, 395 Main and 42 geese

3. Small stitch view from State & Ward

11-29-19

4. Two pix, 1 crane

12-3-19

7. After roof delivery of LOTS more A/Cs

12-4-19

8. Don't know what he's spraying, but his mask tells me it ain't water.

9. The left half shows the Eastern Insulation being pumped up to a top-floor unit. The right half is the closeup of the window and the technician.

12-5-19

10. The guys struggled with this apparently-heavy wire spool.

11. The Main/Ward view

12. What looked more like tan before looks more like gray on a gray day.

13-16. The protective structure that was over the sidewalk on the Main St side was disassembled and then reassembled several feet out into Main St, but I don't know why yet.

12-6-19

17. The scaffolding poles were moved to the furthest west section on the Passaic St side. The State St side should be next.

18. Weird-looking figures appear to do wall and ceiling work in an apartment on the State St side.

12-9-19

19. Pieces of scaffolding get loaded on the truck. I don't know where these were used.

12-11-19

20. Nice day to be on the roof

12-19-19

12. The scaffolding is usually straight across the side.
13. Items get brought to higher floors the old-fashioned way.

12-21-19

14. When the scaffolding support poles need to be moved, a notched board and rope (and muscle) do the trick together with a crew on the ground.
15. This one is being moved from the State St side to the Ward St side.
16, 17. This pole is being lowered to the ground.

12-24-19

18. Welding on Ward

12-27-19

1-5-20 (3)

1-7-20 (5)

#1068 looks like WWE on the roof.

1-13-20 (4)

3 floors of buckets of.............plaster?

I have no idea what the 3 machines are. They were offloaded in the E parking lot, but my site superintendent friend no longer works there. I met his replacement and told him that I need to ask questions sometimes about what I don't know so I can accurately write about them here. He seemed agreeable and gave me his card, but he has not responded to multiple email requests for information, so I'm guessing the third machine is a new version of Thomas The Tank Engine.

the machines you are asking about are propane heaters, used so the drywall compound dries properly and quickly in winter.

2-1-20

1. It looks like the entire building has an internal and fully-inflated black garbage bag pressed against all the windows.

2. A crane bucket appears to be heading down Ward St toward the party balloons.

2-2-20

I've located the machines from my 2-10-20 post that irons35 identified as propane heaters in images 2201 and 2203. They face Passaic St.

2-3-20

1. A shot I don't see often......

2. I don't know what these spools contain.

3. A REALLY long truck gets unloaded at the State St entrance.

2-5-20

Removing and tossing the white covering

2-14-20

1.Dueling selfies on the roof?

2. As I recall, the guy on the roof seemed to be losing his grip and was in the process of rolling over to get the metal item on the roof.

3. More delivered wooden panels...........for what? (answer below)

4. Rooms full of stuff

5,6. The wood panels were cut on the roof and made into enclosures. I think the guy with the roller was applying some sort of sealant to them.

2-15-20

7. Sealant and geese...........and you can see that they started to wrap the boxes in white material.

8. Crane delivers to an apartment.

9. Waiting for the next delivery, while...........

10,11. .......the ground crew loads the crane.

12. Delivery!

2-17-20

The white box looks like it's being made into a robot.

2-19-20

TWO robots

2-21-20

Image 2988 shows that removing the white material from the State St side is about half-done.

1,2. Bringing water lines (I think) into the building on Ward St

3. That can't be good.

4. The bucket worker has just removed some of that white material from the wall and is tossing it 5 floors down.

5. Working near the roof that's below St Joseph's Church in Bogota (which stands in front of Cliffside Park high-rises)

2-25-20 (1)

Interior stuff

2-27-20 (3)

1. Scaffolding planks delivery

2,3. Making the dirt road entrance a little more solid

2-28-20 (2)

1. Crane delivers apartment interior material.

2. Ever see a truck towing something and parking perfectly in two spaces that are on opposite sides of the divider? Did he pull in? Back in? My money's on pulled in.

3-1-20 (6)

1. New sign - old address (it was changed to 395 Main almost 2 years ago)

3-4-20

5-8. I don't mind living high up, but I don't think I'd want to be on the other side of my walls.

9. The electrical corner starts taking shape.

10. Sugar spheres? Colorcon is a pharmaceutical company and these barrels are small, so they wouldn't have been procured for storage or trash. From Colorcon's site: "Suglets® Sugar Spheres from Colorcon are uniform drug layering pellets, made of sucrose and starch, for sustained or extended release dosage forms". On a construction site?

We're getting toward the end of the line - visually - with this project, but I'm still way behind, so I'm just gonna post 20 pictures at a time until I catch up. The dates I took them are underneath each picture and there's not a lot I can say about every image, but to be a semi-accurate representation of each step that occurred in the construction of this building, I have to include everything until there's nothing different to see anymore.

2,3. This is exactly what I thought might happen when I saw these skinny light poles going up on the roof: someone forgot to turn them off, which totally screws up my night photography. Fortunately, I happened to run into the construction superintendent, who had them turned off.

5. Same-day progress

Title: THE 389 MAIN ST ROOFTOP SHOOT
Post by: BLeafe on November 09, 2020, 06:30:58 PM
Although the building isn't finished yet, I was invited to do a shoot on the roof. I went up on the afternoon of November 5 - the same day that I shot the Main/Ward traffic island demolition in the morning. Since that was still going on, I could shoot that also from 6 floors up.

I climbed up the wall ladder on 5 to the hatch that I had seen workers pop out of for months and hit the roof.

Here's what I shot:

1. The roof is shaped somewhere in between a U and a V. This is an old image I found on Google Maps that shows the shape.

2. This image shows the apartments at 40 Passaic St, the First Presbyterian Church's steeple, High-rise Row and part of 389 Main (State St side).

3, 4. I know that #4 shows vents from laundry room dryers and I assume that #3 does too.

5. This is the northeast corner piece that seems to adorn the corners of EVERY new building in town. Future historians won't have a problem identifying the buildings from this time period because they all look the same (how about some variety in the next Hackensack Renaissance's buildings, huh?). In this pic, you can see the Hackensack River and the Anderson St bridge through the openings.

6. Getting close to the southeast corner.

7. Back at the northeast corner, I'm flat on my stomach in one of the openings mentioned at the end of #5, shooting the Main/Ward traffic island demolition (I got a lucky two-fer this day).

8. From the same location, shooting down Main St

9. Looking up Ward St

10. Turning slightly to the right, I got a rare shot of the 435 Main project in white and seemingly wearing a Holy Trinity Church beanie.

11. This shows a lot of the equipment on both roof segments.

12, 13. These two photos show some of the damage done by fish crows to pipe insulation. They REALLY have to find a way to stop that.

Interspersed among all these images, I did a series of photo stitches - some better than others.

14. This one came out well. It shows the river from north of the Anderson St bridge to beyond Kipps Bend and Foschini Park.

15. This rather ambitious stitch begins beyond Sears (I think I see a Continental Plaza building behind it), goes WAY down Main St, around to the hospital and the high-rises and ends up somewhere in the vicinity of Union and Ward, picking up parts of the 389 Main building I'm on, both on the Main St side and the State St side. That's gotta be at least 3/4 of a circle.

16. I like this one. There's a little bit of river, the YMCA looks great, there's a hint of visible NYC, and it goes down Main St as far as can be seen from this location.

17. It's not glitch-free, but this was the best I could get of both legs of the building and the Passaic St side. I don't know if I'd want to be sitting on one of these balconies and have a view that consists of fellow tenants sitting across the lot in their balcony.

18. This one is FAR from perfect (it shows half a car almost right in the middle), but it goes from Sears to Berry St and shows the one-day-only view of the Main/Ward traffic island demolition.

19. This stitch was just WAY too ambitious - especially hand-held - but where else are you ever gonna see the YMCA on Main St, Passaic St, 210 Main AND Hackensack Hospital to the south, the high-rises, Ward St, buildings on State St AND Union St to the west.................and then end up at 417 Main - two blocks NORTH of the Y?

20. I'm done. This is the 5th floor hallway by the elevator. See ya.

Click to enlarge................ESPECIALLY the stitches (some of which you'll need to scroll from left to right to see the whole thing).

I think it's time to call an end to this project I've been shooting for 3 1/2 years.

From pre-demolition of the previous buildings to completion of the replacement, it's been a l-o-o-o-o-n-g journey.
