Hackensack Discussion / Re: 62 Linden Place
« on: March 06, 2009, 03:15:44 PM »
I was told today by someone familiar with the property, that if you look at the picture from the rear of the property, the building on the left at one time was a Stable for Hackensack's Fire Horses.  If you look at the peak of the old barn... there is a door to raise hay bails. I've that in an old Fire House where I was stationed in Teaneck.

If you look at the picture from the front, the second building back was a Gas Station and the Gas Pumps were where the front building is now.

 Any thoughts on this ?

I just spoke to a friend that said... the rear potion of the property was a printing shop in the late 60's & 70's.

Dyatt Pl is one block south of Temple on the east side of Hackensak Ave where the Gas Station is across from the Target store.

I remember seeing in an old Atlas I had - I believe 1876 - that what is now Voorhis Lane ( not to be confused with Voorhis Pl - where the Poiten Still is ) was called Cross St in those days.

I loaned the book to someone and moved away without returning it !

I belive it was an Atlas of Bergen County - you may want to check that out !

yx525,

I have a copy of Mr. Scudder's Fairmount Story and he mentions certain houses in the neighborhood. If you stop by ... I'll loan it to you.

I'm at 836 Main St. by Catalpa Ave.

With the estimate to correct our Combination Sanitary & Storm Water System at 7M - 14M or 405M, I hope our City Officials are talking to someone in the know to get part of the Stimulus Package.

If we don't the help now, it will be a huge burden latter.

If you print them out they're easier to read.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Services for the homeless...
« on: February 05, 2009, 02:28:23 PM »
There are at least 8 new homeless who frequent the Orchard St facility.  One is a young man who said he just returned from the Afgan Theater - things are really getting bad out there.

I've also noticed that the homeless have really suffered this Winter and it is noticeable
just looking at them.

The new Giant Stadium is going up quicker than the new Homeless Shelter.

I passed by the old Esso Art Deco gas station at main & Poplar ave this morning and there is a portable fence around it that wasn't there last week.  I've seen nothing on the Planning or Zoning Board Agenda about it.  I'm hoping for a renovation in its old style but I think it may be torn down.

 Anyone know anything ?

In thinking about all of this... in 1962...I remember a house owned by a Mr. Bill Nicoles (SP) that was just north of Central Ave on the west side and was a newer Ranch style house. Could this be the replacement structure for your house that burned in 1958.

My Grandfather & Mr. Nicoles were in the Home Owners Assoc and against the high rises.

Does this ring a bell with anyone ?

PS: We lived on West Anderson St.

What is now the Concrete Plant in Bogota and in the background of the picture... was the George M. Brewster Ashphalt Plant in the early 1960's.  I backed under the hoppers many times for my Grandfathers Constuction Company.

Was it ever a concrete plant prior to the 1960's ?

The others I know... just can't come up with the names.
