Title: Recent Odds and Ends
Post by: BLeafe on October 26, 2011, 04:20:08 PM
I don't always want to make a separate post for EVERY single picture, so when I get a bit backlogged, I'll make a compilation Odds and Ends post.

There'll usually be some identifying information in the ID below each image. The only one that really needs additional info is the third from the bottom image. It's actually two images of the Conan O'Brien blimp over Yankee Stadium on the last night of their post-season when the Yankees got eliminated.

The blimp was almost stationary in the left image as it faced my living room, but was scooting right along in the right side-view image during the multi-second time exposure. It was probably 6-7 miles away.

Explanations are in the image IDs.

1. Under Rt 4 at the Hackensack River from the Teaneck side

2. No idea, but looks cool

3. No idea, Part 2

4-7. At sunrise

8. Party security

9,10. Pickups

11. Snow tire

12,13. The Art of snow removal

14. The Art of fog

At 6am, I saw a stunning sight from my living room window. A fast-moving fog was coming up the river and the scene from the YMCA south looked like I had never seen it before. By the time I got my camera and tripod setup, the perfect scene had morphed and continued to change by the minute as the fog's edge bounced between State and River streets. I couldn't come close to capturing what I had initially seen (damn!), but this shot was interesting.

The building in the left foreground is the Oritani bank at Main and Berry streets. The one in the center is on E. Salem St between Moore and River streets. In front of it, you can barely make out the Johnson Library's cupola. The yellow lights are on Main St and - above it all (and to the left of center) - is the World Trade Center, so the fog was pretty low (-calized)

Title: Last Month's Odds and Ends
Post by: BLeafe on June 02, 2015, 08:05:31 PM
1. I found this by the back of my building late one night.

2,3. I was on the river walkway by Costco when I saw what appeared to be someone's briefcase just on the other side of the fence. As I got closer, I could see that it was too thick to be that, but it definitely was a case of some sort with a sticker on it.

Perhaps someone dropped it and couldn't figure out how to get it back. It didn't seem like it would be all that difficult, but I thought I'd take a picture of it and the sticker first to see whose it was.

So much for wanting to retrieve/return it..........

Maybe it's attached to the chain links it's sitting on, but it seems like it could be better placed and out of sight (and reach) of the public.

4. I know what Bart Simpson would say if he saw this.

5,6,7. I think #6 or #7 could help out #5..............well, maybe not #7.

Title: Some August leftovers
Post by: BLeafe on August 31, 2015, 04:30:28 PM
These are posted by date because I'm too lazy to make a coherent story out of them. They'll have to stand on their own (or not).

1. Fort Lee sunset

2. Roof weirdness

3. Cars getting ticketed..................by Domino's

4. Mount Teaneck with sun signals off the building at Main and Ward

5. Big clouds, little NYC

6. Late afternoon in Anderson Park

7. When 210 Main goes condo, the residents should have pretty good phone reception.

8. Bass-ackwards plane

9. Sunset

10. These clowns woke me up early one morning by throwing these large metal pieces off the roof.

11. Red balloon over Teaneck

12. Mowing the lawn with a municipal meter quarter collector

13. Make your own sad caption

14. The counter to the previous pic

15. Come and get it!

16. Opposing health styles

Click to enlarge (the horizontal ones enlarge more than the others).

I just noticed that the enlarged versions have better color than the smaller versions - at least they appear to on my screen. I wonder why.

If you see something similar on your screen, let me know in a post so I can ask the boss-man about it.

Title: Fall 2015 Odds and Ends
Post by: BLeafe on December 18, 2015, 11:59:20 PM
1. This happens every year and I still don't know which town's fireworks they are.

2. and 3. I thought there must have been an accident or fire (2), so I walked over there and it was coming out of an open manhole where work was being done. I'm guessing that was the case in 3.

4. Somehow, the photographer managed to get into the shot.

5. and 6.  A local establishment featured goodies that were irresistible to multiple species, so a gloomy government agent closed the place down.

7. A worker above my living room appears to be impaled on the steeple of the First Presbyterian Church.

8. Penthouse nest with a canopy

9. On the FDU pedestrian bridge

10. Winged lemmings

11. High-waisted Santa reacts to crazed neighbor calling his name from 7 floors up.

Title: December 2015 Odds and Ends (3 leftover photos)
Post by: BLeafe on December 31, 2015, 04:15:58 PM
There was a ton of 2015 photos to clean out today. I found these 3 from this month that I misplaced:

1. River fog on 12-23. You can see the Empire State Building in its Christmas coloring (upper left).

2. For (too) many days this month, little Ward St became the slow/only (slownly?) thoroughfare for all southbound vehicles on Main St that were expecting to continue southward on State St. This was taken the evening of the 9th of December.

3. For 3 consecutive afternoons, I saw this little bird (I'm assuming it was the same bird each day) perched on the First Presbyterian Church's weathervane - where I've seen VERY few birds. The first picture was taken on a windy day and the bird seemed to enjoy the ride as the vane kept swinging from one side to the other as the sun set. I photographed the bird on 2 of the 3 days: December 14 and 15.

As usual, click to enlarge................and Happy New Year to you all!

1. Side-to-side police car taillights in motion

2. This scene is on the NE corner of Passaic and Park and has been unchanged for the last couple of months. It could be safe, but sure doesn't look good.

3. All clear at Parisian

4, 5. While sitting at the light at Mercer and Main, I saw the lovely figure of Lady Liberty sashaying across Main St. Shouldn't the street's rehabilitation require an upgrade to the last picture?

2. Check out the new colors on the stained glass window - courtesy of the HFD.

3. Usually, you can barely see the plane in this type of shot, but not this time.

4. Reeling in a big one or pole vaulting?

5. & 6. Oops! (Officer Squillace on the scene)

7. Stashed for safekeeping is a crossing guard's stop sign and a folding that that has "Crossing Guard" written on it.............twice.

8. I guess a citizen acted.

9. Apple warehouse

10. People still do this?

11. It must have been Clean Streets Day (taken 9 minutes apart).

12. Note to parents:there's an app for this too.

Some odds and ends from the last 3 months:

1. Broken-hearted

2. At sunset

3. A reflector is useless on a cloudy day

4. At Johnson Park: this is the first time I've see spikes on a wire.

5. From my car on the way to the Paramus Shop-Rite

6. Two potential tickets: wrong-way car passing an illegally-parked car on one-way Ward St.

7, 8. Contrasting apartment buildings' garbage: guess which one is from my building.

9-13. Fall foliage

14. Moon at sunset

15. A place on Anderson St where I had never been before

16,17. Three interesting items apparently being thrown out behind my building

18. What's up? Nothing that I could see.

19. Sugar-pusher at Rite-Aid

20. The First Presbyterian Church's flock

Title: Odds and Ends: the last 40 days of 2016
Post by: BLeafe on December 31, 2016, 01:00:08 PM
1. Found in a parking lot behind some stores - none of which have anything to do with the law. This is a job for Judge Dredd.

2. A colorful late-autumn view of Anderson Park. I don't recall the fountain having a yellow ring. You don't think it's..............nah.

3,4,5. I did a Ling shoot on December 4 because you never know when it might sail away (and you never will) and found this HFD rowboat chained to the shore..............except it's not HFD - it's SHFD. Why is a Sleepy Hollow NY FD rowboat chained here? (I'll bet I know who can answer that). In any event, it needs a bailing bucket.

6. The old Record building, as shot from the Naval Museum property (you never know when it might sail away with the Ling)

7. #6 might look better this way.

8,9. I went back to the Hackensack River Walkway behind Costco and was hoping that the next-door DPW got around to dumping the receptacles I shot five weeks earlier that were overflowing with beer cans. Unfortunately, someone beat them to it.

10. One of my better Court St Bridge shots

11. The Modern's twin rises in Fort Lee ("The Moderner"?)

12. Flying through the sun

13. A first-snow-of-the-season photo stitch (scroll!)

14,15. Nothing says "Christmas Eve" like a beer run and a hooded person walking down State St with a shiv.

16. Mr Pigeon rides First Class (he has a Gold Card)

17. Diagonal front

18,19. Yesterday's sunny snow shower (I know - the first picture looks like a dirt storm................trust me, it's snow. It might be a little more evident in the second one if you look real hard).

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Title: Recent Odds and Ends for 2017
Post by: BLeafe on April 07, 2017, 04:30:18 PM
1. Two World Trade Center rises.

2. My old Hitachi sits atop the VCR-Printer-Small Fridge snowy-peaked mountain awaiting the technology trash haulers.

3. This is the brightest and shiniest I've ever seen the First Presbyterian Church's steeple since its recent makeover.

4. The steeple photobombs the First Baptist Church's school flag.

5. Someone on the first floor of my building has apparently enlisted Divine Intervention in keeping those windows and doors closed (I know the landlord didn't do it).

6. Window installation

7. Stuffed bra

8. Interesting cloud colors on the moon

9. Photographing Ladies Liberty while stopped at the light at Mercer and Main. I love candids - especially when compared with the posed shot the Hackensack Daily Voice recently ran (no sun on one poor guy's face). Here's the Rutherford DV version: http://rutherford.dailyvoice.com/lifestyle/drivers-see-double-ladies-of-liberty-in-hackensack/704806/

10. & 11. Each truck gets four bucketloads...........always shoot on the fourth one.

12. & 13.The sun's blinding rays were reflected off this Jersey City building right into my living room on March 4 and 5.

14. Meanwhile, about a dozen feet west of the previous image stands this cool guy, who's about 7' tall. I think this is my favorite shot of the year so far.

15. This just in: after yesterday's storm passed, I saw the top few floors of 432 Park Ave in Manhattan sticking out above the clouds that appeared to hover over the Hudson River..........but it's hard to be sure about where the clouds actually were from looking at something that's 5-7 miles away in a two-dimensional picture. BTW - the illuminated building in the lower center is the Marlboro House on Main St in Ridgefield Park.

2. Where dollar bills go

3. This is just as I shot it.

4. Hanging from the rear bumper

Title: Recent Odds and Ends
Post by: BLeafe on October 20, 2017, 04:20:30 PM
These are some photos I've taken since June, but never got around to posting:

1. Need a taillight?

2. Good at stretching, bad at parking

3. New to the concept of doors

4, 5. School buses

6. Church luncheon

7. Live party streamers

8. To me, this looked like a 1950s robot visiting a French boudoir, but it was actually taken in a doctor's office (and had NOTHING to do with my visit).

9. From my living room, I heard a real noisy bunch of crows and found them perched atop 40 Passaic St. I KNEW that they'd all take off at once, so I waited. Sure enough..............

10. Signal from the high rises

11. Classy-sounding name

12. Wire runner

13. It's all spelled out on the image.

14. Ridgefield steam meets Jersey City construction.

15, 16. A two-image, side-by side photo stitch came out a little weird, but a top-and-bottom one worked MUCH better.

Title: A Dozen Recent Odds and Ends
Post by: BLeafe on March 30, 2018, 07:40:08 PM
1. Under the River St RR trestle

2. "UCEDA SCHOOL"? No - I don't see da school.

3. Inside the school that I don't see is a second set of light switches and electrical boxes that aren't there (but a mirror is).

4. The interior of Geri's Deli on Main St

5. The four current city rehab projects that I can shoot from my living room

6. Hanging by a thread..........

7. Things that we won't be able to see this time next year: YOU - buses on Main St, ME - the entire scene

8. A little touchup needed on the River Walkway by Costco

9. Two of the old steeple windows from the First Presbyterian Church

10. ESB (NYC) - Smokestack (Bogota) - Crane (Hackensack)

11. Out of the church lot and into the E lot

12. I finally found a half-century-old little black book of mine that I had been looking for because someone you know signed it back then on 42nd St in Manhattan...............someone whose "new" name hadn't been fully accepted yet (and which I misspelled).

Title: Odds and Ends for 2018
Post by: BLeafe on October 10, 2018, 02:12:50 PM
Stuff accumulates on my desktop during the year. Today is one of many cleaning days.

1, 2. Why workers wear hard hats (protection from flying bird poop)

3. Two projects, two banks and a courthouse. Wells Fargo REALLY needs to get rid of all that unsightly cell equipment.

4. Preparing for two-way traffic at Main and Passaic

5. Lotsuckers

6. When the first 200 feet or so of State St was closed one morning last week because of construction equipment and a small water company dig, all traffic was diverted to Ward St. It was pretty slow-going trying to turn onto busy Union St, but some truck drivers were smart enough navigate the E lot to turn back onto State St and continue their journey.

7. The Riviera Lounge must have HUGE expansion plans...............look at their new parking garage!

8. Another gift from StarKist tuna - I didn't know they had a crunchy version.

9. I could see these architectural delights atop the building at Passaic and Prospect from my apartment (I know they have a name, but I just can't think of it).

10. Looking one block past Passaic and Prospect, this shows the same picture as the previous one, including the foliage with the hole in it ("holiage"?), the Watchung Mountains valley (including Garret Mountain in Paterson), and the triple-cross on the Methodist church at Summit and Passaic.......................but with a much cooler-looking sky.

11, 12. These two across-the-street-from-each-other images were taken on E. Ward St between Main and River. (#11) I'm guessing someone traded in their truck for a motorcycle? (#12) It's just too weird-looking to make up a story for.

13 - UPDATE! - Here's the finished product: doors that appear to open only from the inside. That means the original garage door must be gone...............how boring!

14. Attention all you sign demanders! The wait is over, according to the new sign on top of the former Geri's. Now what happens?

15. This is another of those "Photos I'll never be able to take again" shots. After January or so, the 389 Main 5-story residential monstrosity being built will completely block my 30-year view of the Kipp's Bend section of the river and any boats on its surface. On the plus side..............

16..............I'll still be able to see The Modern I & II in Fort Lee, but because 389 Main's 5th-floor tenants will need to use the elevator, an elevator room will have to be built on the roof and with my luck, it'll block these towers.

Click to enlarge and stay tuned.

These were all taken on one interesting morning a couple of weeks ago:

1,2. Two from home

3. I've posted part of this here before, but not the whole scene.

4. I don't think I've gotten this angle before, but I'm glad I got it here.

5. On the pedestrian bridge between the Teaneck and Hackensack FDU campuses

6. The Current on River project from the river at FDU........it almost looks on the river.

7. From the river walkway near the northern end of Johnson Park

8. I've posted part of the same sign that's by the tracks - this is the whole sign on Main St facing Sears.

9. This is a stitch of the Hackensack River taken from FDU.

1. Adios, Kates

2. Officer Squillace on the job

3. (top) The big cleanout.  (bottom) "You forgot something". (I had a feeling this would happen.............that's why I took the top shot)

4. EMERGENCY! No parking on the sidewalk!

5. As bingo fades away.............

6. Bed King (front)

7. Bed King (back)

8. From a distance, I thought this guy was a 389 Main project worker.

9. At the Second Reformed Church last Sunday

10. I see a potential pairing here.

11. This is my spare. I hope I don't get a flat because it'll stick out like a sore shiny thumb against my other wheels (it's too expensive to get them all done).

12. Yeah, I kinda expected that when the bell sounded, the lights flashed and the gates came down. BTW - you may recall that I posted a similar picture last July (http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php/topic,3746). I just noticed that this is the exact same rail car and banner (probably). Both looked a lot better last year (so did New Jersey Transit).

Title: Re: Recent Odds and Ends
Post by: BLeafe on April 06, 2022, 06:00:15 PM

Lately, I've really been getting into shooting more ridiculously-long cars, etc., with the iPhone PANO setting (future blog post), but while I'm doing that, I'm finding other things to shoot as well. These are some of the recent oh-by-the-way shots.

Click most of the images to enlarge (there are about half-a-dozen PANOS in this group).

1. No cars here, but I had never seen this view of the First Presbyterian Church's steeple from the First Baptist Church's property before.

2. I don't know how much longer we'll see Bruce The Bed King's smiling face, so here's what that block on Main currently looks like. There are a couple of strange vehicles (or maybe it was just one) on the road that happened to come along while I was taking this shot. They (or it) were/was traveling north in the southbound lane, which looks rather dangerous, so I cropped the picture to give you..............

3. .............this image. Bruce looks comparatively sane. And notice the two fading signs on the right that say: "Colony's Warehouse". Before it was called "Bruce The Bed King", it was the Colony Sleep Center.

4. Jumping over to River St, I took this rather drab photo of the Sears Auto Center..............

5. ..............but over in the corner was a much more interesting image. You'd be hard-pressed to find 3 more-architectually-different buildings in such a compressed space.

6. This super-wide PANO shot may not look look like this for long. The Bruce block will be replaced by yet another big apartment building and who knows WHAT will happen with Sears.......

7. Somewhere on the Sears property, I found this open and uncovered rectangular hole that someone could easily fall into. I should have taken a wider shot for perspective, but - trust me - somebody should really remedy this situation promptly.

8. Sears has been closed now for a year-and-a-half. You'd think someone in authority would have cleaned up this eyesore by now (and some of those tires - at first glance - don't look too bad).

9. Closeup (and someone left their shoes on the landing)

10,11. Continuing south on River St, I found these two items between Anderson St and Passaic St.

12. Swinging back up to Main St, I came across yet another sign (on the old Geri's Deli) that's trying to convince people that "The Sack" isn't the dopiest name ever - an impossible task. Most people with a brain in their head are too embarrassed to even utter the name. STOP THROWING MONEY AT THIS NAME..........IT'LL NEVER WORK!

13. Almost home, I saw this gigantic crane hoisting some wood, but wasn't sure where it was located...............until I got home and saw that it was part of the Main-Berry-State-Camden project.

14. Speaking of which...........I noticed yesterday that they've begun tearing down a building that appears to be on Camden St. I'll have to get over there whenever it finally stops raining.

15,16. Today, I thought I saw a huge chain-link fence being pulled out of the ground by a crane. Then I noticed it was also in yesterday's shot, so it appears to be a demolition shield being held in place by the crane.
