Hackensack Discussion / Re: My favorite paper is not having a good day
« on: April 16, 2023, 06:25:01 PM »
Today's paper appears to have been made in two different halves by two different companies in two different sizes.

The front sections are 11" x 22" and the back sections are 12" x 21".

The first two pictures show the measured widths. The third picture also deals with width as it shows what the folded paper looks like, with the back sections sticking out an extra inch on the left.

You'd think that they'd have uniformity figured out after almost 130 years.

The Daily Voice article:

How it looked from my living room (the towers are in Fort Lee, the high-rises are in Cliffside Park and the bottom structure is the roof of 389 Main St - click to enlarge):

Curious about this great movie? There's going to be a screening tomorrow night - Thursday, March 30, 2023 - at 7pm in the Glen Rock High School auditorium (where the original December 2, 2021 reunion concert took place). Tickets - which you can get here: https://tinyurl.com/BandedTix - are $10 (and going fast).

Most of the band - including Uncle Floyd Vivino - will be present. There will be an after-screening audience/band Q&A and perhaps a couple of other surprises.

I got a surprise this morning when I opened up my copy of The Record and found a GREAT - and very thorough - article by Jim Beckerman about this event.

I expected the article to maybe be on the front page of the entertainment section, but it actually made it to the front page (1A!) of the main section! You can read it here:

It's usually pretty quiet around here on Sunday mornings, but not yesterday. I heard men yelling and my ears pointed my eyes south toward the Middle School where I saw activity on the soccer pitch: kids running around and men throwing footballs.

Shoot first and ask questions later. The first 8 pictures are what I saw in the order I saw them. Then I asked Google the questions and the answers included something about the Bergen County Girls Flag Football League, its logo and the fact that games will be starting on Sunday, April 2.

1. Anybody remember this shot from 11 years ago? It appeared here (second shot): http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php/topic,2352

2. It's now the front cover of a book of poetry. Whodathunkit?

Unfortunately, the cover is WAY too dark (I brightened it up a bit here) and the bird must have eaten my photo credit. The author assures me that both problems will be corrected.

Hackensack Discussion / Very Tall New Electrical Poles on River St
« on: March 13, 2023, 03:45:01 PM »
1. On February 7, I happened to notice from my living room that some colorful orange work was being done on an electrical pole on River St.

2. Soon after, I saw a much taller pole that was at about a 45º angle being raised.

3. That was a pretty easy sequence to shoot.

4. Four days later, I'm on the Teaneck Greenway and notice the same pole, the picture window I shot it from and how really tall it is.

5. Exactly a month after that, the sun is shining on a bunch of new River St poles and their really-up-there wires.

Is this going to happen all over town? What's the main reason for such an increase in height?

This is the story that's in the video's writeup.............and be sure to crank up the sound for full effect (and please hit the "Watch on YouTube" link so the view counts):

It was busy at the hospital, so I had to park on the roof of the parking garage.

There's a nice view up there, so after my appointment, I took a few photos..............and then I heard a plane. It was a private jet heading for Teterboro Airport, which is about 3 miles south of where I was standing.

Time for a quick switch to video.

There's been a big stink for years about the noise and pollution of many aircraft flying low - directly over the hospital (and many high-rise apartment buildings on the same street) - and new routes were proposed that were to take the planes over a nearby highway instead.

They might need to work on that a little harder. Here are 4 planes that flew directly overhead in a period of...............EIGHT MINUTES!

And be sure to follow the bouncing sun reflection ball.

I haven't posted on this topic in a while, but that doesn't mean that anything got fixed. Many captions still say that the photo's subject "reacts" when he/she is just standing there doing nothing, but we got a couple of new dopey captions today.

1. Why would the caption advise you to look for the guy wearing purple in a black-and-white photograph?

2. Does anyone in this picture appear to have been "thrown down", as the caption suggests? And when you look at the way the caption writer spelled "Joseph's", do you wonder if maybe he/she got thrown down on his/her head?

There's new twist lately to something that few people put any stock in: horoscopes - something that is usually read for amusement because they're usually so far off.

It appears that a new entity has taken over............one that almost solely involves ridiculous-sounding planetary connections and their effects. Check out these three from this month (and my apologies if you truly believe in any of this).

ONE LATE ADDITION: I just found this sitting for the last month on my desktop...............more great writing.
