Seller says it's from the 1800s.

Maybe, maybe not.

Hackensack Discussion / A Walk in the Snow
« on: February 10, 2010, 06:23:08 PM »
I decided to go out for a stroll in the snow storm at around 11:30 this morning and take pictures before the more-blizzardy aspect arrived this afternoon.

I had to set the cell for smaller pictures because I took a lot of them and the memory isn't great.

Everything looks different in the snow, including:

bicycles

kitchen appliances

garbage

playgrounds

?

trees (it wasn't windy - that's how it looks)

the park fountain across the street

circular electrical wires

religious statues

someone's scarf

Holy Trinity Van Lines

Hackensack Discussion / Grounded Light on State St
« on: February 08, 2010, 11:30:03 PM »
As I was walking out of the post office today, I saw this street light taking a siesta across Central Avenue.

I asked a cop who was directing traffic what happened. He didn't know - he had just been called there.

Anyone care to enLIGHTen me?

Seller's description:

Subject(s):       WWI Photo of Mrs Thomas Ward w/5 Sons in Service

Setting:      Candid image of the celebrated Mrs Thomas Ward of Hackensack, who had five sons in service. Shows her standing in a car with the five star flag, captioned reverse.

Size (inches):       6.5 x 7.5

At first glance, I thought it was Eleanor Roosevelt.

I wonder where the parade was - I'm surprised that Culver Pictures didn't ID the location. Could it be Hackensack?

Boxing sponsored by drugs! There's a combination you're not likely to see too much of these days!

Seller claims it's from 1960 because there's a big 60 in the middle of it. That may be correct, but nothing indicates that it means the year 1960.

Seller's description:

This auction is for a 1960 Heaveyweight Boxing champion trophy belt buckle. Features a high relief image of two boxers in the ring. The word HEAVYWEIGHT and the year "60" appear to be in blue enamel. Also engraved on bottom front with the words "Bergen Drug Co., Inc. Hackensack, N. J."

The back of the buckle is has the makers mark of Dieges & Clust.  Research indicates that Dieges and Clust made medallions and trophies for many sports including producing the Heisman Trophy of football fame.

Buckle measures approx. three inches wide by 2 1/4 inches tall. Has some price tag residue on back, I'll leave the decision on cleaning that to the next owner.

The seller is selling 3 photos - none bigger than 5-1/2" X 3-1/2" - of streetcars in Trenton, Havana, and, supposedly, Hackensack. If it IS in Hackensack, I don't recognize the location, so if you do, post about it.

I'm editing out the photos/info of the other 2 images, so here's what's left:

Seller's description:

Public Service of New Jersey, streetcar # 3511, DT/DE/DR, on Rt. 1 - Hudson River, corssing the New Jersey & New York Railroad on a streetcar bridge, Hackensack, New Jersey  (John H. Riley, photographer).

These are from one seller in Iowa and they're being sold separately.

I've posted many of these before and I don't have time to do 8 separate writeups, so this link will take you to the page where the seller has them all listed. Note: in 6 days, they'll all disappear.

Happy hunting!

Seller's description:

Greetings! Up for your consideration is this neat, vintage postcard with a view of the liquor bottles, bar, juke box, murals, deer and Moose heads of Sam's Tavern in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Publisher Marks: Julius O. Beissbarth, Hillsdale, New Jersey.

Condition: In unused, uncirculated, poor condition due to creasing and edge wear.

Size: Standard 3.5" x 5.5".

Recently, I posted a Sam's Restaurant matchcover and mentioned that Sam's used to be where Rudy's is now. I don't know if Sam's Tavern predated Sam's Restaurant, vice versa, or if they existed simultaneously.

Anyone know?
