Hackensack Discussion / Re: School Board Election (April 18, 2006)

It appears the original election totals printed in the Record were not accurate as they did not include absentee ballots.  I believe Mrs. Bembry was the winner which I believe was confirmed by the Board of Election after all provisional ballots were cast.  If I am incorrect, please advise.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: HUMC Expansion
« on: March 24, 2006, 06:09:35 PM »
The more they get the more they want.  I guess if the application is questioned, HUMC will have their employees who reside in Hackensack again bused to the hearings and pay them for the time away from work.  At the last hearings for the parking garage on the corners of Atlantic & Railroad, residents were lead to believe that the parking garage would alleviate the problem of hospital employees parking on the streets of Hackensack. The city got the Housing Authority attorney, Joe Zisa, to state that the housing authority saw no problem with the construction of that garage only 15 inches from the windows of the residents.  I know the tenants had a problem.  The parking lot is hardly ever full and the employees continue to park on the streets.  Yeah, that one really worked!!!

Eric, have you heard anything about a multi-family development on Third Street between Clay and James Streets?  I know that there was recently a 2-family home built however, I am speaking of an apartment or condo development.

The kids today want the sneakers that cost a fortune and name brand jeans, etc.  It would be cheaper to buy two or three uniforms and a pair of shoes.  The cost of a pair of Jordans or Iversons would cost more.  It would also eliminate peer pressure with regard to what is the latest fashion.  Everyone would have the same clothing.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Boys & Girls Club proposal
« on: February 28, 2006, 10:53:15 PM »
I thank you for bringing this subject up again.  I believe the Boys and Girls Club would be a wonderful idea for Hackensack.  While Hackensack has both the recreation department and the PAL, both are located on the edge of town and not centrally located.  There is a pool at the high school but not open to use by residents.  The cost to register a kid with the B&G in Lodi is minimal.  I estimate that it is less than the cost of registering a child for 3 recreation programs during the different seasons.  The B&G Club could offer tutoring classes, arts & crafts, swimming, karate among other programs.  A gym in the facility with bleachers would offer a safer playing surface than the kitchen floor at the Marinello Center.  I have watched several basketball games there where children have suffered serious injuries as a result of individuals walking on the floor in bad weather because there is nowhere else to walk.  I would be willing to volunteer my time to the B&G or any other recreation program however, I do not drive and would need transportation.  Centrally locating a community recreation program would make it easy for all.  Bus transportation & routes are already in place and even if there were not, anywhere in the Main Street area would be a breeze to walk.

To Average Joe:  I started to comment to your response but decided it was not worth it.  Thank you Eric for your consideration.

I think it is a great idea to publish real estate appplications and variances.  However, since it is suggested that no comments should be made under that subject, the information provided should not include the opinion of the writer as to whether or not he feels this is a good or bad idea.  It should be impartial.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Main St.
« on: December 21, 2005, 08:40:07 AM »
I read the post regarding the Bakman building on Main and Mercer.  I recall a meat packing business at the corner of State and Mercer which is now the Armour Building and occupied by lawyers.  If I am wrong someone help me out here.  Its possible that I just associate the name "Armour" with the building.

The Green house next to Carver Park is not a flop house.  It is a four family home with single families residing therein.  Having been inside one of the apartments, it appears that there are no violations and that apartment was extremely neat.  It was occupied by hardworking parents.  Don't judge a book by its cover.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Overcrowding - Illegal Students
« on: October 31, 2005, 03:45:45 PM »
In all fairness, the BOE does attempt to stop the illegal students.  As students register to attend school, their parents are required to present a lease/deed and a utility bill to prove that they reside in the city.  I know a family who moved from Hackensack to Bogota and was forced to repay the BOE.  If you know of any student who is attending school illegally, notify the BOE.

I watched NJN last night and became a little embarrased to be a Democrat.  The in-fighting needs to stop.  We have an election coming in November and we do not know who our candidate will be.  Maybe the answer is not to vote against Zisa or Weinberg.  The answer may be to vote out Ferriero and unite the party.

The proposed relocation site would have less impact on the residential community and would be safer for our children.  However, is the location near the DPW environmentally safe for the homeless to live?  Would it need to be cleaned up first?  If so, would it be the responsibility of the City or County?

I have mixed feelings about how to deal with the homeless situation in Hackensack however, I think the Broadway location is not a good place if your argument is that some of these people are ill and in need of psychiatric treatment.  The M & M Building is just across the street.  Would you want persons in need of psychiatric help near your children?

Hackensack History / Re: Paul Foschini Memorial Park

Was the park divided by River Road (Teaneck) or River Street (Hackensack)?

I know, growing up as a kid in Hackensack in the early 60s, my parents also referred to it as Riverside Park which I continue to do today.
