Hackensack Discussion / Grocery Store on North State St.
« on: April 10, 2012, 03:03:06 AM »
Back in the 1970's I worked on State Street for NJ Bell. As I remember there was a small family owned grocery store on State street next to Top's Cleaners. I think it was called "Napilatano's" but I'm not certain. It's long gone, but I still remember the friendly workers and the interesting variety of foods. Can someone offer any information?

Hackensack Discussion / My Memories of Hackensack
« on: October 02, 2011, 12:10:01 PM »
My name is Eddie and this is my first post on the Hackensack Community Site. The following is a brief history of my 20+ years as a Hackensack resident.

My grandparents and my mother lived on Poplar ave. in the early 1900's. My mother was born on Poplar Ave went to Fairmont elementary school and Graduated Hackensack High school in 1938 (I have her year book). She passed away in November 2009 at the age of 90.

After my mother was married (1940) she and my dad lived in various places. I was born in Holy name Hospital in 1942 when my parents lived on Summit Ave., just North of Spring Valley ave. My family then moved to Haworth in 1952 and I spent most of my youth there, graduating Northern valley regional High School in 1960.

My parents moved back to Hackensack (165 Poplar ave) in 1971. My dad worked for the "Record" on River street until 1980 when he passed away. I moved into Hackensack Gardens apartments on Arcadia Rd. in 1974. In 1984 I moved to 165 poplar ave. after my father passed away and my mother moved to Florida. I  worked for New Jersey bell Telephone Co. in the Kansas st. garage and later on State street. Although I did not "grow up" in Hackensack I did go to Fairmont School one year (kindergarden). I retired from NJ Bell (then Bell Atlantic) in 1994 and my family (wife and daughter) are currently living in Monmouth County.

I have many fond memories of Hackensack. Main Street especially was the place to go in the 1970's. The Oritani and Fox theaters were still in existence, Packards was the place to grocery shop and Al in the liquor department was as friendly and helpful as could be. B&W bakery had the best crumb cake in the world and I spent more than a few Friday or Saturday evenings relaxing in the Ivy House listening to great music and enjoying a glass or two of wine. I often had my morning breakfast in the Fairmont diner where a red headed waitress who was straight out of the 1950's and owned an old Cadillac served at the counter. I don't remember her name but she was lots of fun and the best waitress ever.

I really miss Hackensack and the memories of the 20-years I lived there.Where ever else I lived or shall live I'll regard Hackensack as my home.
