Suggest Clubs or Groups for these boards
« on: March 15, 2004, 12:13:00 AM »
These message boards offer tremendous potential for community involvement and interaction.

For example, we could form neighborhood groups that would address issues specific to a given neighborhood.  We could have a group or club specifically taylored for youth activities, hobbies, interests, etc.  Each group would have its own message board.

If anyone would like to become a moderator of a particular group, please let me know.

Just a thought.

Community action committees are needed for every geographic community in Hackensack. I would love to see concerned residents create committees, one for each of the following geographic areas:

(1) FAIRMOUNT (all areas north of the Anderson business district, OR north of Passaic Street
(2) PROSPECT/HLLERS(Prospect high-rise corridor and west to Maywood, all areas on the hill south of Passaic Street)
(3) CARVER PARK (HHS to Passaic Street)
(4) DOWNTOWN AREA (Main, State, Union, Park Streets, vicinity of Anderson Park)
(5) "FIRST WARD" (all areas south of Essex and east of Green Street)

These are the unofficial communities of Hackensack. Each has it's own business district, it's own network of streets, it's own history, and it's own identity. There should be a level of organization representing the communities. The residents in each should be focussed on Zoning and Planning Board meeting, property maintenance issues, illegal 2-family or 3-family conversions, etc. In addition to being watchdogs, each commitee should be proactively advancing projects for the public good. For instance, Carver Park residents could be working to redevelop industrial and automotive properties in favor of 2-family homes. First Ward residents could be working on new pocket parks or changing the zoning away from industrial.

I also think it would be great if each community had it's own zip code. Clifton has 4 or 5 zip codes, why not Hackensack. There's plenty of 076 zip codes that haven't been used up, so it's theoretically possible. It would really help build community pride and identity for each part of the city.

That's a more long-term project and needs the blessing of the US Postal Dept, which probably couldn't care less about the sense of community in Hackensack. In fact, 07601 must have the highest population of any zip code in NJ (including both residents and businesses). 07601 is so big and cumbersome to manage by the post office that they can barely deliver mail here. If someone can identify a zip code with a greater population of residents and businesses than 07601, please post on this website. I really believe we are #1 in N.J. If not, we're in the top 1% of zip codes.

And ward lines in Hackensack should be redrawn to reflect the communities, wherever possible. Granted, Carver Park doesn't have enough population to be a ward on it's own.

I think this is a great idea.  I'll volunteer for Fairmount, but will defer to anyone else who responds in two weeks.

Any other volunteers for Fairmount or the other listed areas?

This seems like it could be a real opportunity to make a difference in your neighborhood.    Please respond to this thread or email the editor if you are interested.

You may want to contact  Lt. Patrick Fay, Tel: 201 646-7592, pfay@hackensackpd.org at HPD. He oversees a couple of neighborhood blockwatch groups in the city.

Your idea is great, but can easily be molded into something that already exists.  Why re-invent the wheel?

The Hillers Neighborhood Blockwatch group meets monthly (except during the winter and usually the third Tuesday) at the Firehouse on the corner of Marvin and So. Summitt Ave.  As much as I want to attend these meetings, I simple can't due date conflicts.  Our neighborhood watch group has seen results too.

Having a discussion category for such groups would be a great idea.  I had tried to get the city to embrace this idea a year or two ago (you can probably guess the answer (or lack of one) that I got). Much like city meetings where residents are encourage to attend - some simply can't or cannot be bothered. However having the conveinence of a web site, posting board, discussion threads make it easier for everyone ( actually, anyone that has web access).

There also has to be a way to keep those who are not online in the loop of what transpires online.

zip code populations - I request more info

:o: OK, you've proven that there's 30 other large ones that need to be split up. For instance, Guttenberg doesn't have that many people, and must be sharing a zip code with other towns.

Could you please post all the zip codes of Clifton, and the population of each. That will give some perspective on what I'm suggesting may be relevant for Hackensack.

Also, post the 10 zip codes with the lowest population in NJ. Thank you

Mr Martindale,

::) : I'm more of a fisherman as opposed to a waiter.  The link provided in my previous post will generate reports for all the data you request, and a lot more.  I don't know if you will find data to support or dismiss your argument.

Feel free to generate the desired reports and post your findings here.

Once again, here is the link to generate your requested reports.

If you do decide to post the result of your query please start a new Topic, as this one has gotten off the subject.
