Hackensack Discussion / Re: Sidewalks - Snow removal
« on: January 24, 2005, 02:10:46 PM »
You've lived here long enough to know this doesn't happen.

If that was the case, our taxes would be lower for the amount of money the DPW could make charging properties for snow removal.

The properties I specifically mentioned - hardly ever get done (practically never - but I don't keep records).

Hackensack Discussion / Sidewalks - Snow removal
« on: January 24, 2005, 08:18:50 AM »
So if the city can site two summons on my neighbor for the past dusting (less than an inch) of snow, I wonder if the city will be going after homeowners and businesses that fail to clear sidewalks after this last snow storm?

  - the homes along Essex St (across from the Sanzari building) have once again failed to dig out.

What about homes that are vacant and for sale?  Who is responsible? Will the city go after them too?

What about business properties that are closed?

  - Former gas station on the corner of Essex St / Summitt Ave.

  - Former gas station on Polify Ave and Essex St.

Both of these properties are corner lots and the walks should be cleared.

What about the sidewalk along the park on Polify Rd too. Isnt the city responsible for this sidewalk?

Perhaps the inspectors from Operation Clean Sweep can follow up since, I can't see them doing home inspections till the snow disappears.

Hackensack Discussion / Mayor / Council phone poll
« on: January 19, 2005, 11:50:53 AM »
Did anyone else get a phone call over the weekend inquriing about potential candidates and then a broad Q/A on the Mayor/Council on specific topics?

I only wish I got the name of the person who called.

Over the years, the City’s Property Maintenance Division has received numerous complaints from residents regarding the poor condition of several residential and commercial properties in the City.  In response to these complaints, a team of code officials will canvas the City over the next several months to enforce all applicable property maintenance codes.

Isn't this what the city's Department of Building, Housing, and Land Use is suppose to do anyway? If it was done on a regular basis, wouldn't there be less complaints?

Hopefully our neighborhoods will benefit from property owners who fail to up keep their property. The better a neighborhood is kept up, the greater value owners have in property value.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Anyone using VOIP?
« on: December 01, 2004, 02:46:13 PM »
Yes it does.  Very descriptive "how-to's" right from the web site without having to sign up.  Most VOIP services allow this.

I haven't done this step yet. I am waiting for my home phone # to port over  and have a 2nd land line installed for my home alarm system (VOIP is not recommended for home security systems, you loose internet access in the event of a power failure).

Great resource on Cable service, VOIP, Tele CO, Cellular with forum posting boards and help from other users:

I jump on board with VOIP.

I decided to go with Vonage.  It helped that a relative of mine uses the service and I got two months free being a new customer from a referral.

Advantages from Optimum Voice or AT&T CallVantage:

1.  I keep my existing phone number (OV cant do this)
2.  No contract (OV and ATTCV have contracts)
3.  Cheaper plans - I signed up for $14.95 a month with 500 anytime minutes and all the features Vonage offers. (OV - $34.95 per month, ATTCV has $19.95 per month - local calling only or $24.95 per month unlimited.  I can change anytime to the Vonage unlimited plan anytime.

I signed up last Friday (Black Friday), received my telephone router yesterday, service is online (with a virtual phone # till house # is porter over from Telephone company). Simple to set up too and my wireless router works with this telephone router too.

I've eliminated the nagging AM Radio signal in my phone that I have had for 5+ years on my house line that AT&T and Verizon could not fix.

Finally!  :)

The old Texaco gas station on the corner of Esses St and Polify Ave (across from the Arena Diner) is being torn down this week.

Now if the bulldozer and dumpster could only make its way to other gas station property diagonally across the intersection... ::)

Hackensack Discussion / Re: High School
« on: November 10, 2004, 08:50:51 PM »
Quite the contrary...

I am graduate of the Hackensack School System.  Maple Hill School / Nellie K Parker, Middle School and the High School. My own children will probably attend school here as well. Having supportive family and friends, any student can do well at HHS.

I did not intend to imply you were instigating a racial discussion. My apologies. I was trying to head off the topic from heading in the wrong direction. The initial posting was looking for positive influences of attending HHS. I enjoyed my time at HHS, but the initial posting probably is looking for more info from additional parents, students, supporters that are involved now.

I have several friends that are educators in school systems - teachers, vice pricipal, principal in Bergen and Passaic Counties, each can share negative stories.

Most of us would love to send our kids to private school, but rises taxes here will prevent most of us from having that as an option, but that's another topic to discuss.

I can already tell where this chat is heading. Anytime there's a discussion about HHS - its always about the racial issues.

I only hope someone posts something about the education (or lack there of) students will get.

Hackensack Discussion / Anyone using VOIP?
« on: November 04, 2004, 11:01:43 AM »
Is anyone in town using VOIP (voice over ip - phone service via cable/dsl line)?

I am contemplating using Vonage or ATT CallVantage. Would like like to know if anyone is using either one and any problems, issues you may have.

Thanks in advance.

Hackensack Discussion / So how many political phones calls did you get?
« on: November 01, 2004, 10:01:50 AM »
Since early last week the phone at home has been ringing off the hook with political phone calls.

Yesterday (Sunday) I counted over 10 calls to my home.

Why can't political phone calls be part of the "Do Not Call" list?

I can handle a call or two, but several calls each day is intrusive. Its enough to turn people away from voting all together.

Am I safe to assume  ?? that since my remodeling and reassessment on my home three years ago - I may be safe from another potential tax increase or do I need to fear the worst like most?
