Title: School Board Election (April 18, 2006)

Lastest story (from The Record, 3/12/06)

HACKENSACK -- Board of Education trustee Walter Carroll has resigned after more than eight years of service.

In a brief letter sent last week to Superintendent of Schools Joseph Montesano, Carroll said he would leave his seat due to "illness and personal reasons." The resignation will take effect Wednesday.

"We certainly regret it,'' Montesano said Friday. "He has been a wonderful, dedicated member who has always put the best interest of the kids at heart."

Carroll did not return calls Friday.

Montesano said he's not sure how a replacement for Carroll will be chosen. Even though school board elections will be held on April 18, he said it is likely too late to add the position to the ballot.

He said the board will likely discuss Carroll's replacement at its meeting on March 29.

Carroll, an inspection clerk for a laboratory testing equipment manufacturer in South Hackensack, was appointed to the board in 1997.

The writer of The Record's article says, "Fanny Hillers Elementary School and Hackensack High School have not met federal standards for three years in a row. Under the law, the district must provide supplemental education services and a school improvement plan, and give parents a choice of sending their children to better-performing schools within the district."

My question is where will the BOE send my child if HHS doesn't improve?  I want the choice to send my child to another high school within the district.  What better-performing high school is within the district?  Do we really have a choice?

It appears the original election totals printed in the Record were not accurate as they did not include absentee ballots.  I believe Mrs. Bembry was the winner which I believe was confirmed by the Board of Election after all provisional ballots were cast.  If I am incorrect, please advise.
