Hackensack History / The "A Stroll Down Main Street" exhibit
« on: May 24, 2010, 03:50:06 PM »
I finally remembered to go see the "A Stroll Down Main Street" exhibit at Bergen Arnold Community Constable College at Main and Passaic. I asked a security guard how long it would be up for and he said it's coming down some time this week, so if you haven't seen it, don't waste time like I did.

I took some shots with my cell - mostly of images that I hadn't seen before or never owned. There were a couple of reflection/glare problems, but overall they came out semi-decent.

1. How long did I wait before going there? Apparently, it opened on April 15.

2. While most of the exhibit is inside, some of the items are in the outside display windows. I found the Holy Grail 1876 Bergen County Atlas and its perfect counterpart sign on the Passaic St side (along with some unsightly window reflections):

3. This photo wasn't labeled and I have no idea where it was, but I'm sure Mr. Editor does:

4. How cool would it be to see this structure on Anderson St today?

5. The Bijou was located at 150 Main St. I found something online that's about 25-35 years old that says "Today, the site is Lowit's parking lot".

6. I've NEVER seen this before:

7. Someone who used to go here mentioned this place to me last week and I wasn't aware of it. You can tell we grew up on opposite sides of the river. This was located just north of Johnson Park.

8. The old Five & Dime:

9. I'm not sure what year this is from, but it appears to show less information than the 1896 map:

10. Can't ignore any grouping that Jimi's in:

11. I'm finishing up with one of my childhood memories. I could see Santa's sleigh and reindeer strung between the two Packard's towers from my street in Teaneck - a mile away (I had to angle the shot because of glare).

Hackensack Discussion / "Click It Or Ticket" HPD blockage
« on: May 24, 2010, 01:45:53 PM »
Every year around this time, the HPD participates in the national "Click It Or Ticket" campaign to get everyone to use their seatbelts. It's a very necessary program, but maybe a little more thought could go into the "when" aspect of it at the location shown below.

I won't spell out where this location is (most locals can figure it out). It's a perfect place for this purpose (and has been for a few years) because no beltless scofflaw can be aware of what's about to happen until it's too late.

However, the hour between 8:30am and 9:30am is not a good time to do this at this particular location. I know it's part of rush hour and the number of tickets issued is probably higher then, but that shouldn't be the only consideration.

The police pull the offenders into a parking lot that is heavily utilized at that time by a lot of social workers and their clients, who arrive in vans. Many of those clients have difficulty walking and are let out closer to the street to minimize the walk.

Today, the vans had a hard time even getting into the lot. In the picture below, you can see one van made it in, but you can also see 6 vehicles that were pulled over into the lot and are behind the police cruiser.

The police issue the tickets there and no one moves until that happens. As you can see, no one can get into the lot with this line of cars blocking the way.

Again, I am fully supportive of this program. I just hope the HPD is compassionate enough to adjust its timing a bit to accommodate the disadvantaged and their social workers.

Description:

This is a brass print type, just under 2 inches long by 3/8 inches wide by 3/8 inches thick, with a town or city in New Jersey, 'Hackensack, N.J.' on it. This is a very unique, one of a kind item. I don't know what it was used for, probably a newpaper. It has a screw hole in the back for screwing onto a printing machine.

That is one UGLY font!

I know this is in the site database, but perhaps some of you haven't seen this before, so it's worth posting again.

Too bad Johnson Park doesn't look this good today.

This is at the top of page A-2 in today's paper. The below two pieces run side-by-side, but I stacked them so I could post them bigger.

Hackensack Discussion / The Cuss from Hoe (for Chief O)
« on: May 17, 2010, 12:23:15 AM »
The worst local 70s club name? "The Cuss from Hoe" on Paramus Rd, Paramus.
They really packed them in.....some good Local Bands at The Cuss.......
I can't find any pictures of that bar anywhere online, but I knew I had one somewhere. I just found it.

I met a girl there who I went out with for 6 years, so it was a kind of special place to us. A couple of years after its name changed, I decided to get a blowup of it as a present for her.

No one had one.

I finally advertised in the paper and someone in Rochelle Park replied that they had a framed one in their home and that I could take a picture of it, so I did and here it is.

Just as you remember it?
