Despite the turmoil all around.........serenity.

I took this shot of the northern point of Foschini Park at 8:25am on Monday - about an hour and a half before high tide.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Court St Bridge work on schedule

I haven't been to the site in a few months, so I figured that the crane must have placed the brand-new bridge in place by now.

Not only hasn't that happened, but the old bridge is STILL intact and sitting there off to the side!

What I saw basically was two ends of a road being built toward each other (see first photo - click to enlarge). I asked a worker when they might be done.

"Next year"

Would the new bridge be a flat road with no steel structure?

"No. The old bridge will be placed on the road."

Is that common knowledge? I hadn't heard it before. 1908 sitting on 2012 sounds like an interesting sight.

Apparently, the steel of the old bridge is being reworked/replaced, but it will look the same (second picture).

You know those people who wait for days to be the first to cross a bridge when it opens? A fancy convertible with a Mickey Mouse hood ornament is already lined up to be #1 (third picture).

A reply!

"I know this has not been released anywhere. It is obvious bootleg recording, but I cannot recall hearing about any jazz clubs in Hackensack at that time. The HACKENSACK JAZZ CLUB opened there some years later, but not until about 1974. Any further info you find would be appreciated."

Here's what the outage looked like from here. The cars were all turning onto Union St because eastbound Passaic St was blocked off at that point, though I don't know why.

I think it was more widespread than a radius of 3-4 blocks. River St is STILL out  by me and The Ice House appears to be out too.

Right around the time you posted that, power was lost for at least 3-4 blocks in all directions from me and came back on at around 9:15. River St is still out.

I spent much of that time on the roof trying to take long exposures on a skinny tripod while dealing with really brutal winds, so I'm sure that not everything is gonna be razor-sharp.

It was interesting watching flashlights moving all around the neighborhood. When the power came back on, I peripherally saw what looked like a transformer flash to the west of me as the area lit up and a LOT of cheers were heard.

I'm downloading now...........gotta run.

OK, all you Irene/Skynyrd fans............here's the song of the day:

Which, of course, came from:

And I'd be remiss if I left out the most obvious song for this event:

And here are 3 versions of a lullaby for tonight - a VERY interesting assortment of groupings:

Turn your fridge/freezer up as far as it will go.

If you lose power, your food will stay colder longer.

Post all your before, during (if possible), and after stories here.

I've gotten two phone alerts this morning from the Hackensack Office of Emergency Management. I imagine most of you have too, but just in case you didn't:

The Atlantic St parking garage is being made available to Hackensack residents in flood-prone areas until Monday at 8am.

Another alert told me that I was in a flood-prone area and should move to higher ground. Since the river would have be at least 60' higher than normal to affect me, I think I'll stay put.

It's gonna be an adventure - my ancient unit on the roof of my building is exposed in every direction, so the fun will be ongoing throughout. Fortunately, my landlord recognized the seriousness of the problem and has boarded and sealed some of my windows from the inside.

I have to see something and have some light (and take pictures), so I'm leaving the picture window as is.

I hope that was not an unwise decision.

And it's just started to rain. Here we go!

Stay safe!

I found a site that listed all of Bill's recordings, but this wasn't on it, so maybe it's a boot. Must be a good one, because the bidding is up to $50 with less than a day left.

The site invited questions, so I asked about this, but got no answer. If I get one, I'll post it.

Might I suggest that Oratam_Watching start his own website

That's an A#1 great idea, Homer, but you misspelled the misspelling.  (I trust that wasn't Freudian)  ;)

Think Elmer Fudd trying to say "Reaping".

On Monday, I heard what sounded like a high school marching band nearby. Lo and behold, I saw what is guess is the Hackensack High School marching band practicing on the Middle School field.

The director's voice amplification was loud and clear throughout the neighborhood: every instruction, every do-over, and every countoff ("OK, we're on a count of 30 and stepping off at 31. ONE, TWO, THREE........." and all the way to 30 - many times. I hope nothing was going on at the funeral home across the street.

The one song I heard over and over (and over) didn't sound bad.

They were there Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I don't know if they were supposed to be there today, but a small trailer that was on the field all 3 days is still there, so -assuming they're there tomorrow morning - be there at 9am if you want a front row seat.

One odd note: on Tuesday when the earthquake hit and people were pouring out of buildings, the band played on and never missed a beat. I don't know if they even felt it, but it was a very strange soundtrack to what was going on in the neighborhood.

I guess the show must go on!

Here are some photos I took from here on Monday and Tuesday:
