Hackensack Discussion / Re: Linden Street Construction

Certainly not.
Just thought that I would add a little bit of historical perspective to the neighborhood since probably 99% of the current residents weren't living there when Comfort Coal was in operation.
Just think: Ike was  the president then; Holy Trinity had a high school only a few blocks away; you could grab a decent meal at Sam's; and, the Board of Ed. had  just added a modern outdoor bell and buzzer system at the Middle School.

Maybe the Editor can dig up the old newspaper stories about the lumber yard fire across the street where the shopping center is now. If Ol' Homer is correct, it was about 50 years ago and one of the biggest in the City's history.

The YOU TUBE folks would have had a field day with that one.

Continuing with that line of thought; Hackensack has an elected Board of education. Theoretically they are the highest position of authority. That being the case the neighbors including Messrs. Leafe and Gentile have to go on record by attending a Board meeting; bring it to the Board's attention; and if the Board doesn't act accordingly, popularize it as a political issue. That should get the candidate's attention prior to the next Board of education election.

You hate to politicize things; but, sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get results.

How about dinner and a show? We can start off with the Owl and the Pussycat.

Ol' Homer to the rescue here. If not in jail, Ms. Foxy Brown is/ may be a resident of Englewood. If we can get her to stop in at the central swamp early some morning, the big old red fox's libido may cause him to respond to her reggae crooning. Now if Mr. Leafe can dress as a Great Horned Owl and sit in a tree -- voila -- we have the picture.

Aw shucks; didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Still a nice shot.

Nice shot -- but Anderson Street looks like it's in better shape than that flag.

Golden opportunity here for a museum. Actually it's now or never. Lock up some space in the building now before some other group grabs it.

Sorry there Chief; but, the State Restaurant was located in a group of  buildings on the corner of Main Street and what was then Morris Street. This building has been replaced by the large flight of stairs leading up to the plaza level of Court Plaza at the corner of  Main Street and what is now Sussex Street.

Ah ha!!  Did it ever occur to anybody that the problems with the bells at the Middle Shool are caused by the fact that the Bd. of Ed. works on a different calendar than the rest of the City and that they are a century off due to an error by their Y2K consultant ten years ago?

That is quite interesting; but, if you want to know about something even more interesting in the same neighborhood, go about a block further south on State Street to the old Masonic Temple between Atlantic and Warren Streets. Unfortunately this building has been boarded up for quite some time.
Ol' Homer is not a Mason; but, was given a tour of the building about thirty years ago. When I walked outside I shook my head in utter amazement. Dan Brown's latest book THE LOST SYMBOL is based substantially upon Freemasonry and the interior of this building is/ was right out of The Knights of the Roundtable.  It might be enlightening if our City Historian could round up some old photos of the interior if they exist.

Sorry Chief O; but, I can't help you out with a joint on Main Street near the walkway to the bus transfer station. The walkway was actually a street known as Demarest Place until the mid 70's when it was converted to a pedestrian walkway. There was an Army- Navy store named Sherbys on the southeast corner --  right across Main Street from the old Grants dept. store.

Not a bad selection.
Either you are too young OR afraid to admit you ever cavorted at the Ivy House; listened to the piano player and hoisted cocktails with the lawyers and judges at the Colonial with brother Lou; went to the transvestites ball on the last night that the State Restaurant was open; or caught the male go go dancers at The New Bell.
Hackensack has had it's fair share of fine watering holes.
